To wonder why so few women use the diaphragm nowadays

I am forever reading posts about contraception and wonder why so few women use the diaphragm or cervical cap nowadays.

I used both for years and found them very reliable.

No hormones, no coils leading to heavy bleeding/pain and no condoms.

Why have they gone out of fashion?

Like pp, when we did sex ex at school and it was laid out on the desk with everything else I didn’t really warm to it, it seemed unwieldy and alien and i couldn’t envisage using it. I suppose I immediately dismissed it as an option and never thought about it after. It does seem quite retro now! But clearly it’s still the preferred option for some.

The femidom was the worst one though, my teacher at the time said it wasn’t very sexy as it sounded ‘like a crisp packet’ in use - I never forgot that!!

Yes french , if I’m using contraceptives (ALWAYS), it needs to be to prevent conception, I will not be having a kid, ever, and also don’t want periods. The diaphragm seems to have a shite rate of actually preventing fertilisation and I won’t be rooting around in my minge and squeezing gel round an object that may or may not prevent fertilisation. As a middle aged woman, I can manage to swallow a pill every day no bother. No pregnancy and no periods-bliss.

Not being too bothered = not ideal timing for a baby but secretly you would be thrilled. Preferably in a stable relationship with a non-nutter. Or e.g. you have two children and haven't really 100% decided not to go for a third.

Or fertility issues force you to be far more laid back since it's not possible to plan babies into a specific 6-12 month window, you have to go with the flow a lot more even at the times you are actively TTC, and manic TWWing etc will make you insane. Can translate over to a more laid back approach at times where again it wouldn't be the best timing for a baby but you wouldn't say no either.

People who have used it alongside other contraception and not got pregnant, you’re using 2 lots of contraception so can’t say that the diaphragm has been the reason they haven’t got pregnant!
Personally I think it’s a lot of hassle.
I’m currently pregnant but when not I use the patch. You just change it once a week and it’s as effective as the pill.
As this will be my last baby I am planning to get a copper coil after the baby is born.

Anyone who wants one but has difficulties with sourcing - try a Caya from Amazon - the video is really clear and it’s one size fits all pretty much.
Failure rate is 6% with perfect use, 12% with actual use which is a lot higher than lots of couples are happy with, paired with the ‘ick’ factor and lack of spontaneity/ associated irritation or UTIs some women experience.
Having said that when DD is born I might give one a go between pregnancies as a back up while breastfeeding as we wouldn’t be trying but certainly wouldn’t be upset if I conceived.

I've been using it alone for about 20 years now and never got pregnant.

Create an email account just for this and send an anonymous report, OP. That will get at least start an investigation.

Oops, wrong thread!

Jemima232 · 23/06/2019 09:57

Whenever DH and I were TTC I didn't use the diaphragm (obviously) and got pregnant within two cycles every time.

I used it for over 25 years without becoming pregnant once.

I quite understand that it's not for everyone.

Since its failure to work is the cause of my existance, I dont consider it reliable!

DistanceCall · 23/06/2019 12:38

@Jemima232 No, I just had several tabs open at the same time.

Jemima232 · 28/06/2019 23:49

Have recalled that I myself became pregnant after being sterilised (which is alleged to be the best contraceptive) so the diaphragm beat that hands down
