To prefer a summer of rain to summer heatwave if we have to choose between the extremes?

At least we still have the bright mornings and the light nights and if I get damp it's because I haven't rainproofed myself..

The heatwave went into August because we were on holiday and we were swimming in the sea at 8am one morning in Norfolk.

mydogisthebest · 20/06/2019 11:40

Well the heatwave did not go into August where I live. Also I don't think my memories of the weather are skewed because I keep a diary and write in that what the weather was like and how I felt that day.

As I type this it has just started pouring! So much for a dry and sunny day which is what the forecast was. So yet again I have a machine load of washing to somehow get dry. Guess I will have no choice but to use the tumble dryer.

So now 19 days of rain. Not just rain either but constant grey and not very warm either.

RosaWaiting · 20/06/2019 11:42

I don't like the term "heatwave" because the official definition is a lot different than mine

from the POV of a Londoner using the Tube, no air con at work, boiling flat etc, it was a huge problem from late May till late July. Slightly less after that.

If you live in similar circumstances, the "heatwave" did last a very long time indeed, it was horrendous.

I remember going away for a weekend and being shocked by the state of the fields in early July - really shocked.

I'm still hoping next week's forecast is wrong.

Emmabryant123 · 20/06/2019 11:42

Just hang it inside my dog?
What do u think people without a garden do ...

Jinxed2 · 20/06/2019 11:44

I’m not built for heatwaves and get horribly sweaty, but I’ll take that over being miserable because we can’t do anything because of the rain

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 20/06/2019 11:48

Hate hate hate the rain. I know we need it but as a Scot I think I’ve endured enough of it. Some sunshine, please. At least at weekends.

ARGH WE DON'T ALL LIVE IN THE SAME PLACE STOP TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THE WEATHER WAS LIKE LAST SUMMER WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY LIVE

Bluebluered · 20/06/2019 11:54

ARGH WE DON'T ALL LIVE IN THE SAME PLACE STOP TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THE WEATHER WAS LIKE LAST SUMMER WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY LIVE*

EXACTLY!!! stop telling me it was hot for ages and there was a heatwave. It wasn’t a heatwave. It was SUMMER. We haven’t had it for so long that people have forgotten what summer is. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

RosaWaiting · 20/06/2019 11:56

what do people want - a location listed in the title for every weather thread? I suppose that's fair enough.

there was one particular poster talking about walking through the "grounds" of her house and listening to bats and so on. At that point, I wanted to say "please say if you live in a mansion with huge grounds" Grin

NewAccount270219 · 20/06/2019 11:56

Argh you have completely misunderstood what I was saying - it is NOT objectively true that there was no heatwave and 'just summer' because IT DEPENDED WHERE YOU FUCKING WERE bangs head on table repeatedly

ForeignBodies · 20/06/2019 11:57

It WAS a heatwave in London. It was hotter than the 1976 heatwave (that’s on record) and there were many days when it was 30 odd degrees.

That’s a heatwave for the UK.

RosaWaiting · 20/06/2019 11:57

*sorry, last summer there was one poster saying that.

I think that was a "love summer" thread, so I didn't comment on it because I think that's rude, but I was reading it while parked next to the noisy portable air con in my tiny flat, deafened by said noise but desperately needing cool air, and wondering if I should start playing the lottery!

NewAccount270219 · 20/06/2019 11:58

I just want people to stop telling other people that they're delusional for describing the weather differently to them with no acknowledgement that they might have been in different places

mydogisthebest · 20/06/2019 12:12

Emmabryant, yes but I do have a garden and a washing line and would like to be able to use it.

I have no airer so the only places I can hang clothes inside is on the radiators. No radiator in bedroom, tiny one in bathroom, one in living room has a sofa in front of it. So basically could only hang a couple of things. Plus I really don't want my house looking like a laundry.

lickthewrapper · 20/06/2019 12:13

A little of both rain and sun is nice. But I do like that earthy smell after it rains!

Emmabryant123 · 20/06/2019 12:14

Buy a airer then ?
Better than using the dryer Everytime

Emmabryant123 · 20/06/2019 12:17

I use a airer from April - October usually as have no garden
Just crack open a window slightly to avoid condensation
It's really not difficult
You don't have to use a drier just because it is raining

mydogisthebest · 20/06/2019 12:17

Thanks for the advice but I won't be buying an airer. I hate seeing washing hanging round a house, it's not good for health and often creates condensation. My neighbours' windows are streaming with condensation and I would think part of the problem is how much washing she has hanging all round including the bannisters. They have 3 children so lots of washing that they too can't get dry outside.

I will use the tumble dryer if I have to

Emmabryant123 · 20/06/2019 12:22

Open the windows then even slightly
My windows have no condensation on them

Or how about oh idk stop whining about a complete non issue

missmouse101 · 20/06/2019 12:36

Condensation is caused by poor ventilation. We are a family of 4 and I dry washing inside our small house on airers, with windows open and it's fine. Sometimes run a dehumidifier in winter.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 20/06/2019 12:50

Nooo!
I hate all this rain. It's June and yet I'm wearing jeans, a long sleeved shirt and a thick fleece. I want to be in shorts, t-shirt and Tevas.
Hot and sunny means I can wear a swimsuit and not a wetsuit, sit out in a pub garden in the evening and walk the dog without having to hose him down afterwards.
Last year was just perfect.

RottnestFerry · 20/06/2019 13:10

I'm just about to go out and do some work in the garden. I can almost guarantee that it will be pissing down within ten minutes... despite the sunny and dry all day forecast.

Tortoiselass · 20/06/2019 13:45

Where are you, I'm in London wearing shorts?

TapasForTwo · 20/06/2019 14:12

"I just want people to stop telling other people that they're delusional for describing the weather differently to them with no acknowledgement that they might have been in different places"

I agree. I think on weather threads it makes it more relevant if people state where they are from. Yes, London is warmer than the rest of the UK. A Scottish summer is not like a London summer, so when people complain about the heat and then get narky when the rest of us say "what heat?" they need to understand that the vast majority of posters do NOT live in or anywhere near London.

HorridHenrysNits · 20/06/2019 14:13

Was your doggy not suffering in the heat last year colin? Where are you?
