...to ask Conservative voters and Leavers who watched the debate what they thought?

I live in a Remain bubble so I wondered if any Conservative voters or Leavers watched tonight's debate and, if so, what they think about the candidates?

Rory Stewart seems like an intelligent, realistic, honest man. Best of the bunch.

AlexaShutUp · 18/06/2019 22:31

Rory Stewart is by far the best option, but I imagine that he would be the last choice for the vast majority of leavers and Tory members.

Sadly, I think we'll be stuck with Boris.

HarryRug · 18/06/2019 22:34

Surprised at other’s comments as my view was Rory Stewart came across as unrealistic and out of touch, has an air of tree hugging idealist about him.

NationalAnthem · 18/06/2019 22:36

I have never heard such a blatant pack of lies - leave on 31 October with no deal - how exactly? So bloody annoyed at the bullshit this lot are spouting and how eager the MPs are willing to swallow it.

Gth1234 · 18/06/2019 22:38

I thought Maitlis was appalling, and all the questions were from labour stooges. (except for the DSNP snowflake stooge)

NationalAnthem · 18/06/2019 22:39

@Gth1234 what questions would you have asked?

longwayoff · 18/06/2019 22:39

I'm none of the above, don't have a vote in this and am probably biased but what a poor selection for Leaders of Men, so to speak. Boris was particularly poor, under orders not to speak I suppose. Felt quite sorry for Rory Stewart attempting to talk sense amidst the lunacy.

Coppersulphate · 18/06/2019 22:40

I am a member and will vote for Michael Gove if he gets through, if he doesn't get through then Boris.

Rory Stewart is dreadful. He is a remainer and would not get us out of the EU. I don't think he would not get many votes from members.
Nearly all of the members I know will go for Boris.

Coppersulphate · 18/06/2019 22:41

I mean Rory Stewart wouldn't get many votes from members

how? annul the law to leave without a nodeal. pass a law to sack Bercow. Deselect all the Tory recidivist remainers. The leader needs to grow a pair. And leave! Can you imagine Margaret Thatcher dealing with this Tory party?

I thought Emily hated Boris and didn’t hide it, they all did their virtue signalling “my great grandfather was a Muslim / my wife’s an immigrant / I was fostered / I was brought up in a poor family” crap, that Michael Gove gave decent answers and was listened to the most, Rory Stewart kept harping on about Brexit which was a one trick pony situation - there is more to being PM than Brexit though I appreciate it’s huge and Boris sensibly kept quiet where he could.

The one thing the others did that Rory Stewart didn’t (apart from his strange body language and I think it is generally polite to look at the person speaking in a debate as opposed to staring at the floor or ceiling) is mention that they agreed with the others from time to time on certain points before making their own. They will all be in a cabinet together so it was sensible.

I did vote leave but I nearly voted remain - I was absolutely torn and I am a floating voter. We have an excellent Labour MP but I don’t like Corbyn so unfortunately unless the labour leader changes between now and the next election, the Tories will get my vote and I thought Rory Stewart was great before this debate and he’s still fine but just shouting “at least I’m honest” is only a bit of what a politician does. He will be a great Tory leader next time around but this is not his time. They were all fine but I don’t think the BBC did it amazingly well. I wanted to tell Emily Maitlis to shut up and let them speak. Let her be Andrew Marr on Sunday morning.

Coppersulphate · 18/06/2019 22:45

I think Maitlis showed bias against Boris which was unprofessional

NationalAnthem · 18/06/2019 22:47

I think the Tories should be very grateful to Jeremy Corbyn - he has kept them in office! Had there been a half-way decent labour leader the Tory party would be no more - unfortunately both parties will still be led by idiots. What a poor representation they all are for the UK.

None of them answered the actual questions asked, except Sajid ref the enquiry into islamophobia, fair play to him for that. I know it's a bit of whataboutery but the Tories are being accused of Islamophobia and Labour anti-semitic - I cringe when they bicker over such things - people in glass houses...

haveuheard · 18/06/2019 22:57

I'm not Tory or a Leave voter but was puzzled by the whole thing. Why no rules, why silly chairs making them look like frogs. The whole set up was bizarre and didn't make any of them look like they could lead a country. It would have been more productive to have a debate with only 2 or 3 candidates, this wasn't really a debate.

LadyGardens · 18/06/2019 22:59

I’m not a Tory party member but my parents are and they were a bit horrified by tonight’s shit show. My mother described it as having the opposite impact of a party political broadcast in that it only served to make the whole Party look crap. Thank God for the Tories that Labour are such a calamity at the moment, it’s all that’s keeping them in power.

Fibbke · 18/06/2019 23:00

Emily Maitlis was really annoying. Rory s was sweet but he lives on another planet. Boris actually came across fairly well. Javid, no. Hunt, dull. Gove is clearly intelligent but no way as leader.

croon979 · 18/06/2019 23:05

The standard of debate was terrible, Emily retained zero control and was a useless chair. Boris was even more dire than I expected, no wonder he did not turn up to any other grillings - he simply an’t cope. Rory Stewart was the most honest for me. However, I just remain massive,y depressed by the situation.

Zipee · 18/06/2019 23:09

I wondered when they would be sitting down with Alan Sugar's mates so they could rip their plans apart.

NationalAnthem · 18/06/2019 23:10

I wondered when they would be sitting down with Alan Sugar's mates so they could rip their plans apart. That is so what is needed to happen!

Yabbers · 18/06/2019 23:23

Because he was honest?

Fibbke · 18/06/2019 23:28

None of them are honest. I don't care as long as Brexit gets done effectively and the economy is run properly.
