...to ask Conservative voters and Leavers who watched the debate what they thought?

I live in a Remain bubble so I wondered if any Conservative voters or Leavers watched tonight's debate and, if so, what they think about the candidates?

What does “Brexit gets done effectively” mean to you?

None of them have a credible explanation for how they would deliver an effective Brexit.

ElectricBlueFire · 18/06/2019 23:31

To be fair some of Rory’s honesty was just saying the others can’t do what they say. He believes absolutely that the European leaders won’t budge and Bojo eh al believe that they will if presented with a PM with charm and enough bullishness to make them climb down a bit. Boris May get them to climb down with the threat of no deal - Rory is too reasonable to try to persuade them so he won’t even try. Bojo has the unpredictable on his side. They will believe he will No Deal. And he would. And that is what could lead to an acceptable deal.

I think. But God knows.

quizqueen · 18/06/2019 23:31

Boris will not be getting my vote after tonight's performance. He had no vision for policies post Brexit. I only joined the Tory Party to get a chance to vote a real Brexiteer in as PM and most of these candidates are not. Gove is probably the best all rounder and has had the most experience in cabinet in a variety of roles. Also, he's from a proper working family background rather than being born into money. I would spoil my ballot sheet rather than vote for Stewart; we've already had one Remainer Prime Minister masquerading as a Leaver trying to get us through Brexit and that ended badly.

TheInebriati · 18/06/2019 23:35

Rory ''all about the love'' Stewart voted to cut ESA for disabled people.

moonfacesfanny · 18/06/2019 23:36

Historically I'm a brexiter - The only person who could make me change and who I felt was genuine was Rory - the only candidate to stand up to Boris who doesn't have the balls to stand up for his beliefs - It's beyond embarrassing - I will vote for him however, he comes across as genuine with morals

MissEliza · 18/06/2019 23:38

I've admired Rory Stewart for a long time but he didn't act like a potential prime minister tonight. The only one who did iwas Michael Gove.

I didn't see the programme. As it appears from several threads on here that Rory Stewart is the favourite candidate of left wingers, you can safely assume Tories won't vote for him; I won't.

Unfinishedkitchen · 19/06/2019 04:28

You know we’re fucked as a country when someone with Stewart’s voting record is described as being a ‘left winger’.

Seems like everyone slightly to the left of Farage is left wing now and some people won’t be happy until hanging and poor houses are brought back.

BlueberryFool123 · 19/06/2019 04:42

Conservative voter (but - sorry for jumping on thread). Thought it was all a bit of a farce. Everyone talking over everyone and they all looked like they didn’t have policies.

I was disappointed with Rory stewart, didn’t think he came across well, and I plan to vote for him.

Although I wouldn’t vote for him, I thought Gove was the best performer. He came across as the best advocate.

Hunt although he comes across a bit dull, clearly does know about business. I wonder if he’ll get Chancellor in a Boris cabinet?

Megan2018 · 19/06/2019 05:00

Agree that Emily was useless as chair-and I think the whole debate thing pointless. Sajid is terrible and I think will withdraw.
Rory Stewart is just horrendous in every way and if he gets in I’ll definitely give up my membership! If Boris is on the ticket then he is my preference but his performance in the debate was only ok, nothing special. I have never trusted Hunt and still don’t.

Sashkin · 19/06/2019 05:11

From Michael Gove’s Wikipedia page:

“His adoptive father, Ernest, ran a fish processing business and his adoptive mother, Christine, was a lab assistant at the University of Aberdeen, before working at the Aberdeen School for the Deaf”

Doesn’t sound exactly impoverished to me; son of local business owner, privately educated then went to Oxford. Ok, not literally titled nobility like the rest of them, but hardly working class.

SusanWalker · 19/06/2019 05:46

They were all shockingly bad, full of soundbites. As the mother of a mentally ill child who also has autism and has not always received the help he needs, I was most disgusted when they all failed to take any responsibility for the cuts to the education budget, almost pretending that labour has been in power the last nine years and it was nothing to do with them. And Gove was education secretary for some of that time.

Only Hunt admitted he had cut social care too much.

Rory Stewart did at least point out that promising tax cuts when services are cut to the bone and need more funding is wrong.

And Johnson was lacking in fundamental facts about brexit. Like thinking we can have an implementation period without the withdrawal agreement. Thinking we can use GATT 24 when that has been debunked. They are either living in la la land or they know it's bullshit and think it's ok to lie.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/06/2019 05:53

SusanWalker you sound like neither a Leave or a Conservative voter.

I’m both, but shouldn’t comment either as I didn’t watch it. DH did, and still likes Boris.

bellinisurge · 19/06/2019 06:34

I found myself saying Oh For Fuck's Sake too many times and then remembered none there was trying to impress me.
I would have thought Gove with his nerdy schtick actually looked like he could do the job and his swipes at Boris "he joined me to campaign for Brexit " were well placed.

NationalAnthem · 19/06/2019 06:51

What did Europe do to Gove's family for him to hate it so much, he alluded to it in the C4 debate...

Zipee · 19/06/2019 11:56

He claims EU fishing quotas and other regulations made it impossible to work.

However, Gove's father admitted he sold it as a going concern.

Gth1234 · 19/06/2019 13:11

And now it's becoming clear that the BBC did round up stooges for the planted questions.

At the time, I thought the candidates should have had the CO Jones to stand up and walk out, as the Bee Gees did.

Fibbke · 19/06/2019 13:16

The stooges asking the questions were so obviously carefully sourced.

GeraldineFangedVagine · 19/06/2019 13:23

How can someone who wants to vote labour but who won’t if corbyns party leader, change their mind and vote Tory? I find that astonishing.

Fibbke · 19/06/2019 13:24

How can someone who wants to vote labour but who won’t if corbyns party leader, change their mind and vote Tory?

They grow up?

Lifeover · 19/06/2019 13:26

I surprised myself and found myself warming to Gove (still can’t believe I wrote that) and hope he gets through)

GeraldineFangedVagine · 19/06/2019 13:28

Witty.
