I've been perimenopausal for about a year now, and I thought I was pretty well-read about what it would involve. But some of the things I've experienced have come as a particularly unpleasant surprise and I was wondering if others had found the same! Perhaps if we share some of the things we've been through it will help other women to be prepared when they reach that time in their lives too.

So, aside from the usual hot flushes and night sweats and irregular periods, I've had:

Ovulation flu! I don't have a better term for it really, but every time I ovulate now, I get weird flu-like symptoms such as aching muscles, swollen neck glands, and suddenly feeling cold and tired all the time. It took me a while to make the connection with the time of the month, and I thought I was just getting a bit of a cold, but it only ever lasts for a couple of days and then goes away completely.

The fatigue. Even after getting what seems to be enough sleep.

Weirdly, the lower back pain I've suffered with for more than a decade has more or less gone, but now I get joint pain in my knees and elbows instead. It's much worse a couple of days before a period.

Anyone else had any symptoms they didn't expect, and did they go away once you were completely through the menopause?

Feeling suddenly startled by something I've seen in my peripheral vision.

Happens mainly when I'm driving - suddenly think there's a bike or vehicle right next to me or about to go into me.

Lozza70 · 25/01/2020 19:36

The dizzy spells!! I fell off one step in the garden but landed on a plant pot and the umbrella base and managed to crack my ribs and bruise a kidney. I was so mortified I didn’t go to a doctor for 3 days, I had one glass of wine before and thought they would think I was a lush.....

willdoitinaminute · 25/01/2020 19:52

Have had many of these symptoms over the last few years. DH &DS renamed me the dragon. Periods were not a problem because of Mirena coil and I have a low dose oestrogen patch that helps with sleep. Although I still have regular nights where after 4 hrs sleep I’m wide awake. Thank goodness for box sets on tv.
But the muscle aches have been awful. And until someone posted about vertigo during menopause on MN I was quite worried.
The fog is clearing and since Christmas my energy levels are steadily increasing. Much to my DHs delight my libido has returned with a vengeance, for the last 2 yrs I had given up hope of ever being horny again. The only problem now is the 15yr old passion policeman living with us so activity is limited🙁

VerbenaGirl · 25/01/2020 19:58

Waking feeling sort of hungover when I’ve not had a drop to drink, with that headache that just lurks.
And I have also lost my appetite, even though I have always loved my food, it’s just not interesting me any more.

Bunnylady54 · 25/01/2020 20:15

Feeling unsettled & not knowing why.

Hairydogmummy · 25/01/2020 21:39

@QueenRefusenik I'm pretty sure I'm peri too but periods still regular ish. 24-32 day cycles and everything in between. I have loads of peri symptoms!

MadameF · 25/01/2020 21:51

Unexpected symptoms are not actually having any. If my periods hadn't stopped 2 years ago I wouldn't know I'm menopausal, I'm very lucky, I know it isn't easy for a lot of women. I think doing a lot of sport and being fit has maybe helped.

ShinyMe · 26/01/2020 09:01

Has anyone else got ridiculously sensitive to smells? A few weeks back something smelt funny in my fridge, and it drove me up the wall so much that I had to take everything out and clean and scrub and bleach every surface...

Then a couple of weeks ago something smelt funny in the kitchen, that meant I had to spend all weekend bleaching everything in sight and scrubbing the floor three times.

Today my bedroom just reeks. Nobody else can smell anything, just me.

Maybe it's nature's way of making me do more cleaning.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 26/01/2020 09:52

My asthma has got worse, and it's triggered much more by stress. I spoke to the asthma nurse about it at my last review and she said it happens to a lot of women but they don't really know why.

othervoicesotherrooms · 26/01/2020 09:58

Is nobody crying all the time? I am! Everything makes me cry!

Chemenger · 26/01/2020 10:06

Menopausal feet was definitely a thing for me. Thank god for Sketchers. I feel I have come out of the other side of things after maybe 4 years. Confidence is back, more energy, feet don’t hurt (this might be helped by magnesium supplements which also stopped my ankles swelling at the merest hint of heat), more sleep, not tortured by anxiety, not crying in my office because I can’t cope with simple tasks. I’m interested in life again, not just trudging through it.

Hairydogmummy · 26/01/2020 20:29

Just read the full thread properly! So much resonates! I have the heightened sense of smell too...but only just before period. The symptoms come and go but some of the weirder ones are one burning bright red ear and cheek which someone else mentioned, feeling of static electricity over my hand and arm. I've also had the vertigo, palpitations, extreme and sudden fatigue, the worst is the anxiety and brain fog though which feed in to each other. I've had terrible anger and moods when premenstrual, the flooding periods, huge amounts of egg white discharge at ovulation and loads of watery stuff afterwards. Sleep trouble and night sweats. Either horny or not interested at all. Shoulder pain. Dry eyes. I'm on ADs for the anxiety.

Really wish there was more awareness of peri. When I've mentioned it to friends they haven't heard of it and think I'm being a hypochondriac or if I say it in reference to their symptoms they think I'm insulting them!

Honestface78 · 26/01/2020 23:14

Osteoporosis. I'm 40 Hmm

WeeBitSleepy · 26/01/2020 23:48

Thank you for bumping this thread- I’ve found my peopleGrin I’ve also found some good accounts on Instagram to follow, both medical and humourous. I’d recommend Hello Perry as one of them (absolutely no personal or pro connection to them, I’ve just found it funny and relatable). There’s some good podcasts covering the peri phase too, worth a listen.

Cassandrainthenight · 27/01/2020 23:44

Could hands going numb when asleep being something to do with perimenopause?

Hairydogmummy · 28/01/2020 06:57

I get that! I think it must be. GP says it's nothing else. Happens when I have my hands up by my head. Physio said it's over extension of nerve.

Cassandrainthenight · 28/01/2020 09:13

Hairydog, yes, for me too when my hands are raised, but it is was the only comfortable way to sleep for me 🙄

Hairydogmummy · 28/01/2020 13:01

I find it's better if you can avoid bending your wrist as that stretches the nerve more, I put my hands under the pillow. I definitely think it's hormone related.

peaceanddove · 28/01/2020 13:53

My ankles and feet were so stiff and painful when I woke up that I actually limped until lunchtime. And the bastard insomnia, had always loved my sleep and been very good at it. Then suddenly I'm lying wide awake, literally all night, not a wink of sleep. I thought I was having a breakdown.

BloggersNetwork · 28/01/2020 14:45

Could someone help me please? My biggest concern is weight gain as I am 2 st heavier than I was 2 years ago. Already don't eat pasta, bread, rice or potatos, rarely eat processed food, drink little or no alcohol. I am not mother Theresa, I do eat sweets, but nothing outrageous. I exercise for 30 min 4 or 5 time a week, walk everywhere.

Just got blood results from GP (most unhelpful ever, no point asking any questions as they couldn't care less). It says that my FSH level is 64 which is high. I am 50 YO and no periods for 3 months.

I suspect the high FSH is what's making me gain so much weight. Is there a way to treat FSH directly?

Scratchyback · 28/01/2020 15:07

Ok, the bad stuff first. Apart from all the normal stuff, awful period paid, sore breast etc etc etc - the weird stuff was... vertigo, a sore tongue, a weird feeling of doom Confused and (before I have a hot flush) tingling hands and fingers (like I'm about to fall from a height). Now i'm through the worst of it (I think!) I have such a feeling of clarity and can see everything without my estrogen goggles on. Its great, its like enlightenment! Grin I can see situations for what they are and understand the motives people have without getting in the least bit upset about it. Its strange but really liberating.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 28/01/2020 15:47

Omg I've been getting numb hands too Shock. I thought it was just me sleeping oddly. It's horrible and takes a few minutes to get the feeling back.

YouTheCat · 28/01/2020 16:21

Apart from all the aching and occasional numbness, I feel like I'm going a bit mad. I get emotional over stuff when I have never been the emotional sort in my life and I'm having panic attacks. I had one so bad at work today that I had to request to leave as I didn't feel safe to do my job. I feel confused and shite.

SecretWitch · 28/01/2020 16:28

Anyone reported fanny tingle? It’s like a buzzer going off

Menopause induced rage

Disturbing erotic dreams

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2020 16:43

MN is brilliant sometimes, giving info specifically for women from women, 🤛🏼
that is so diífficult to obtain elsewhere

I've luckily sailed through meno without other syptoms
but thanks all Thanks for informing me that these 2 changes are related:

Lost pube hair - I'm 63 and I suddenly noticed a year ago that the front is bald,
but I'm visually disabled and a very unobservant Aspie to boot, so this could have happened years ago Blush

Vertigo - I started fear of heights / vertigo on balconies, foot bridges etc very suddenly at puberty, Hmm so I wondered if it was hormones when it suddenly got worse at about 60

My periods stopped at age 51, but the above 2 symptoms happened 10 years later
I've never taken HRT, due to lack of symptoms and I won't take it just to stop vertigo - I just avoid high places

I retired last Friday and I am soooo glad to just chill
The last 3 years at work have been tough and I had enjoyed my work before
