To think that inviting primary children to witness erect penises, gang rape references and spikes up mens arses isn't artistic, it's pedophilia?

This art exhibition is being pushed by Gendered Intelligence, a group that works in schools:

www.transgendertrend.com/gendered-intelligence-training-teachers-kiss-my-genders/

The event is not age restricted, in fact children are being actively encouraged to go.

I have been informed by a very 'woke' friend that this is art and I am homophobic, kink shaming, and transphobic (because apparently even linking to the above website on my FB is, no matter what it says) and that maybe I should go with my own primary aged dc to 'broaden my mind'.

My mind has been broadened. That friend obviously shouldn't be let anywhere near my dc again.

AIBU?

Just me then...

Totally inappropriate for school age children.

KneelJustKneel · 15/06/2019 07:38

Wow.

We get to see the kids sex ed talk before they have it and its nothing like that 😮.

Im truly shocked that could be okay.

MrsMozartMkII · 15/06/2019 07:39

I'm all for live and let live, but whilst I was happy to tell my DDs that people like different things, etc., there's no way on this green earth that I would've taken them to see that.

And for the record, they're both bi.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/06/2019 07:40

Is there a clicky link?

SophoclesTheFox · 15/06/2019 07:41

YANBU.

it’s utterly unsuitable for children.

herculepoirot2 · 15/06/2019 07:41

Does not sound okay.

iklboo · 15/06/2019 07:42

I think your friend is trying so hard to be woke they're practically insomniac.

IceRebel · 15/06/2019 07:43

Wow. Shock

I work in a school. If I showed pupils similar images then I would lose my job, and probably end up in the local / national papers. Yet it's ok for those who have curated the show to happily admit school children. Angry

summerofresistance · 15/06/2019 07:44

*clicky! Stupid autocorrect.

I read this yesterday. My mind is still boggling. And Gendered Intelligence regularly go into schools to train teachers.

Are they really saying art based on gang rape, blow up dolls, furries, and close ups of erect penises is suitable for children- including primary school children? Because, it certainly seems that way.

This lot shouldn't be anywhere near schools.

MustardScreams · 15/06/2019 07:46

Jesus, just read the whole thing. I’m all for kids learning about LBGT+ issues but WHAT THE FUCK is this?!!?! Show primary aged kids a picture book, not gang rape or porn photos. To what end? I don’t understand.

ShouldIStayOrShouldIRun · 15/06/2019 07:47

Thank god! The pile on I was getting on my FB was actually starting to make me wonder if I'd been missing some significance of this to the gay community.

My (no resoundingly ex) friend said that this exhibition was designed to help children understand if they were 'queer'.

Wtf?

I said I'd already explained to my children that sometimes women love men, or women love women, or men love men. And it's all fine. That is perfectly adequate in my opinion for primary age.

And what rape, extreme fetishes or porn has to do with being gay...no idea.

Yet it's ok for those who have curated the show to happily admit school children

Their website offers discounts for groups of school kids specifically for this show and says primary age DC and their teachers can go for free, as can any schools in the local borough.

They also offer an event over several days for DC 13-17 to make their own art based on the exhibition.

It's not only not suitable for kids, they're actually promoting it to them.

FamilyOfAliens · 15/06/2019 07:48

Is there any way you could amend your OP so that it makes it perfectly clear that it is Transgendertrend that has written the article about this, while Gendered Intelligence is the organisation that provides training in schools and is responsible for the exhibition?

ShouldIStayOrShouldIRun · 15/06/2019 07:51

Must point out, the friend insisting this is ok and it's homophobic, transphobic, etc. to have a problem with it it 100% straight to my knowldege.

WhenIsTheEasyBit · 15/06/2019 07:51

YADNBU. This needs masses more publicity. Can't imagine how on earth any school could justify this - if you can't show a DVD classified above the pupils' age, how is this different?

ShouldIStayOrShouldIRun · 15/06/2019 07:52

Good point Family, will do.

OP posts:
GreytExpectations · 15/06/2019 07:53

I agree that is not suitable for children so yanbu.
However, please dont suggest your friend is "woke" as the original meaning to be woke is to be alert to racial injustice in society.

onedayiwillmissthis · 15/06/2019 07:55

I'm on the Android app and none of the 'clicky links' actually work. Can someone post the full address, please.

ShouldIStayOrShouldIRun · 15/06/2019 07:56

I described him as 'woke' because that is how he has described himself, it's on his bio. I thought he meant to be ironic...

OP posts:
Hopeygoflightly · 15/06/2019 07:56

We’re primary school children actually invited to this exhibition though? Is that the target audience for the Hayward exhibition? I didn’t think so, and the reviews - which are overwhelmingly positive of the exhibition in general- that i’ve Seen certainly aren’t suggesting that this is a family friendly exhibition.

MrsMozartMkII · 15/06/2019 07:57

Bloody hell!

I just clicked on the link.

How the hell have they not been closed down?! If I'd taken young children to see that I'd expect to have the police and social services knocking on my door.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 15/06/2019 07:57

The meaning of ‘woke’ has expanded to encompass a number of other social justice issues since it was first used.

Myusernameismud · 15/06/2019 07:57

Good god, they really are promoting it to schoolchildren. How is this OK? I'm all for giving children a broad and balanced curriculum, but exposing them to nudity and sexual violence is a huge safeguarding issue. As someone who works in education, if I found out that a parent had taken their primary aged child (or even a young teen under 16) to this exhibition, I would genuinely flag this to my DSL. And if they didn't see an issue I'd take it to LADO.
