To think that inviting primary children to witness erect penises, gang rape references and spikes up mens arses isn't artistic, it's pedophilia?

This art exhibition is being pushed by Gendered Intelligence, a group that works in schools:

www.transgendertrend.com/gendered-intelligence-training-teachers-kiss-my-genders/

The event is not age restricted, in fact children are being actively encouraged to go.

I have been informed by a very 'woke' friend that this is art and I am homophobic, kink shaming, and transphobic (because apparently even linking to the above website on my FB is, no matter what it says) and that maybe I should go with my own primary aged dc to 'broaden my mind'.

My mind has been broadened. That friend obviously shouldn't be let anywhere near my dc again.

AIBU?

I had a look at the images on the link above and in all honesty I think a lot of children would find them quite scary. I can’t see what benefit it would have on an eight year old to expose them to these images.

jennymanara · 15/06/2019 09:57

In fairness exhibitions with material unsuitable for children will often have more safe for family viewing stuff on their publicity. But they make it clear that it is not suitable for children. And they do not allow workshops for teachers about how schools can use the material as a teaching aid.

Doesnt the cerne Abbas giant chalk drawing in the hills near Dorset have a huge erect penis on display for all to see

howwudufeel · 15/06/2019 09:59

I think a big chalk man is a bit less scary for children than a photo of a real man with an erect penis.

Myusernameismud · 15/06/2019 10:00

vulpine are you genuinely comparing that to a photo of a man wanking? Ffs

Yes and isn't that stick figure outline also masterbating in a black PVC glove?

No.

ShouldIStayOrShouldIRun · 15/06/2019 10:00

And eleven year olds sometimes draw a rude approximation of a penis on their schoolbooks, about as real looking as the chalk giants.

Are you really saying an actual photo of a real cock and someone masturbating it with a black lace glove is exactly the same, so fuck it we should show the kids?

Echobelly I'm clearly not as arty as some people. I've read the reviews and the exhibition sounds like a pile of shit.

jennymanara · 15/06/2019 10:03

Yeah ask at your next safeguarding training if you should report a parent who took their kids to see that chalk drawing??

Lets not pretend that people do not know the difference between that and a photo of a man wanking.
I actually would not have an issue with my teenage children seeing a photo of a man wanking. I would have an issue with photos of men with spikes up their bottom. The first one is normal, the second one is not.

But I am a lot more liberal than most parents and I would never take anyone else's child to see a photo of a man wanking.

I think any school that actually took kids to this exhibition would face a massive backlash from parents.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/06/2019 10:04

Absolutely, after all "‘Kiss My Genders’ pushes society towards accepting a more fluid approach to gender identity: it demystifies it and normalises it. If art can help knock bigotry down a few pegs, it’s doing something right."

S1naidSucks · 15/06/2019 10:04

Vulpine, I really worry about someone who can’t tell the difference between something that was done hundreds of years ago and modern pornographic images that are being deliberately targeted at children. Please stop trying to be so bloody woke that you’re fast asleep. Hmm

sackrifice · 15/06/2019 10:04

Queer Theory Jeopardy.

HandsOffMyRights · 15/06/2019 10:04

Seriously, Vulpine?

summerofresistance · 15/06/2019 10:04

I don't see anything in original article saying anyone was expecting young children to come to the exhibition

Again, for those at the back.

The gallery website is promoting discounts for school children, and primary kids go for free, as does a tutor with them.

The gallery website is promoting an event based on this exhibition over several days, for 13-17 year olds.

The gallery website's content warning is totally inadequate and doesn't give parents any idea how unsuitable this is for kids - alongside the discounts for school groups, it would be reasomable to assume from the information given that the sexual content is mild - not extreme & explicit fetish images / gang rape inspired art.

user1469976617 · 15/06/2019 10:06

No way would our school be taking the children to that.

Madness.

IsabellaLinton · 15/06/2019 10:06

Words fail me.

This isn’t suitable for a child of any age. Exposing children to this is abuse.

The education session sounds ineptly managed, with the leaders being surprised at the high primary turnout. But unless a Key Stage or curriculum Area. is specified primary schools are always more responsive to this kind of offer. They have more flexibility.

The input by the GI person sounds typically double-speakish and ‘with
An agenda’ (as much as the blogger, if not more, since the agenda was their raison d’etre in the space.

Schools need to know what they are dealing with in an exhibition and it sounds as if the Hayward have not given enough info.

Parents can make their own minds up but also need some inkling in order to do so.

It sounds ineptly managed and run, but yelling ‘paedophilia ‘ is hysterical and OTT. And doesn’t help. IMO.

Vulpine · 15/06/2019 10:10

Given that most boys play with their penises then we are talking about protecting the girls. But to be fair I don't think I'll be taking my kids any time soon.

What the fuck are you on Vulpine?

Boys see their own genitals so it's quite ok to show them adult men masturbating???

I hope you don't have access to/are responsible for any safeguarding of children.

And why is that? It is open to kids after all... Hmm

What?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/06/2019 10:15

Are you in a position of responsibility for children vulp?

sheshootssheimplores · 15/06/2019 10:15

Depressing.

This has only come to light because of the work of Transgendertrend. We need them to keep shining a light on this.
I have donated to its Enough is Enough campaign, which can be found on Twitter or their website.
