To ask what is the mark of the beast?

I've noticed references popping up to this on a few threads here and am confused Confused - one on a Madonna thread Grin the other on a conversation about microchipping people, something to do with an 'end of days' scenario.

Having never studied or read the Bible I only have the vaguest idea of what it is - but why is it being drawn on now with regards to technology?

I thought it was part of a Biblical story, so obviously something very religious folk would be concerned with, especially those who believe the end of the world is nigh. But I really don't get why it is popping up randomly in conversations about other stuff?

Is it not 666?

Shivermetimbers0112 · 14/06/2019 17:29

My dog did something earlier that was a definite mark of the beast 😳

TheFirstOHN · 14/06/2019 17:29

"It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name."

I think it can potentially mean whatever people want it to mean.

AguerosAngel · 14/06/2019 17:30

My Ex’s birthmark.....

KennDodd · 14/06/2019 17:32

Is that quote from the bible? If it is then I agree, it can be made to mean anything, especially given it's a translation.

TheFirstOHN · 14/06/2019 17:33

The topic comes up whenever there's discussion of implantable microchips, especially ones that might in the future allow contactless payment.

TheFirstOHN · 14/06/2019 17:35

I agree, it can be made to mean anything, especially given it's a translation.
Yes, that's the NIV translation. I don't read or speak New Testament Greek, so I can't tell you what the original says. I think it was part of a vision (or hallucination, depending on your viewpoint) received by John.

AbsentmindedWoman · 14/06/2019 17:35

Yes, but why is there a link between a Biblical quote and tech? Possibly being thick here but I don't see it?

@Scaryteacher I still don't see any religious connection upon reading that article Confused

Dystopian novel, sure, I see resonance there. But nothing religious.

666 is the NUMBER of the beast not the mark.

Lemonmeringue33 · 14/06/2019 17:54

All you want to know (and more!) about the mark/number of the beast.

Does anyone remember the film The Omen?

scaryteacher · 14/06/2019 17:57

"It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name."

The Swedes are chipping themselves to buy goods, thus corresponding with the extract from Revelation 23.

DGRossetti · 14/06/2019 18:04

666 is the NUMBER of the beast not the mark

and 668 is the neighbour of the Beast.

cherryblossomgin · 14/06/2019 18:05

Maybe because tech is distracting us and that allows the devil to enter our thoughts. Or tech is being used as a way to control people just like religion. It acts as if its to help us but its actually a part of new world order which has been linked with satanism and the mark of the beast.

On the topic of microchipping people its possible that it might happen one day. It could hold all your personal information and could be more secure. Imagine never forgetting your passports because its in your arm.

DGRossetti · 14/06/2019 18:05

One of the better films of the 80s

cherryblossomgin · 14/06/2019 18:06

There is also a theory that the most successful families sold their souls to the devil for their wealth and control of the world.

AbsentmindedWoman · 14/06/2019 18:09

Oh, is the new world order something to do with Freemasons or Illuminati or somesuch? Links to satanism? Really?

Well now I'm embarrassed. I've just read everyone else's responses.

I came on to advise you mark was nicknamed the beast on the chase BlushBlushBlush

What a tit

I though Masonic Lodges were broadly Christian.

@Kittykat93 I have no idea what any of that means, but we sound equally confused Grin

Please ignore me. It's Friday and my brain is frazzled.

Haven't even started on the wine yet

zen1 · 14/06/2019 18:15

I remember asking an evangelical Christian this on my university course in the 90s. Even then, there was talk of the New World Order, except instead of people being microchipped to buy goods, back then it was interpreted as no one would be able to buy and sell without an ID card / credit card.
