To ask what is the mark of the beast?

I've noticed references popping up to this on a few threads here and am confused Confused - one on a Madonna thread Grin the other on a conversation about microchipping people, something to do with an 'end of days' scenario.

Having never studied or read the Bible I only have the vaguest idea of what it is - but why is it being drawn on now with regards to technology?

I thought it was part of a Biblical story, so obviously something very religious folk would be concerned with, especially those who believe the end of the world is nigh. But I really don't get why it is popping up randomly in conversations about other stuff?

Here's some allegory ... I think it's quoting part of the book of Revelations (damn fine song too)

floraloctopus · 14/06/2019 21:36

I'm fairly sure it's an amalgamation of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson.

Ooh, yes, longway- I'd forgotten all about the Rapture! The C of E is so bloody vanilla - no fiery knife-edges for us Grin (Disclaimer: it might not be a knife edge, admittedly, but fire and knives definitely come in to the End Times somewhere!)

Dahlietta · 14/06/2019 21:41

The Book of Revelation is wild!

TheFirstOHN · 14/06/2019 21:45

The C of E aren't really big on eschatology.
I'm trying to think what the End Times would be like from an Anglican point of view. Perhaps the first harbinger would be a PCC meeting where nobody has remembered to bring biscuits. Then someone would suggest doing away with all rotas and letting people serve as they felt led by the Spirit. That would surely be the beginning of the end.

In my workplace some people refused to register for fingerprint payment at the canteen because of religious reasons and "mark of the beast" was mentioned.

Ah, First, here come the Four Dog-Walkers of the Apocalypse, Just a Small One For Me, Feeling a Little Poorly, I Won the Tombola and, at the back, Had a Falling Out with the Postman. Now let's get started. After you. No, I insist, after you . . .is someone taking minutes?

Skyejuly my daughters birthday is 6/6/1996. I am convinced shes the antichrist Grin

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 14/06/2019 23:04

As pp has said it’s from Revelation.
No one has any idea what it actually means. I have been very sceptical that it relates to technology being implanted as that would be a ‘external’ addition and God is much more interested in the state of our hearts.
Anyone who tells you they definitely know what any of this means doesn’t.

BogglesGoggles · 14/06/2019 23:09

@cherryblossomgin I had a good laugh at that. Apparently when they say the world they mean America 🙄

beeyourself · 15/06/2019 00:19

There was a series of books a few years ago (the Left Behind series) - Christian dystopian fiction about the end of time, including a bit about "the mark of the beast" and how those who refused to take it were executed.

I can see the link (not to executions yet!) although I'm a bit cynical about the interpretation...

GummyGoddess · 15/06/2019 14:09

Oh, I love that Monster video. I bet I could come up with links to the devil for any product I choose as well.

Magic Stars

The very word magic is satanic. Magic allows the chance for demonic possession.

Suitable for vegetarians. Vegetarianism is against the natural order, the Bible is all for sacrifices of and feasting on animals.

Made by Mars. The name of a false God.

The free cinema tickets are the icing on the devils food cake. Cinemas are full of gluttony, large screens with sex scenes, condoning materialism. Not only this, they are SUNDAY tickets, to entice people away from Church.
