padded cards!? The JOY of those boxed delights! Shiny satin...often with a tassel or bow to complete the beauty!

I remember Valentine's Day ones were the best!

'For my fiancé 'cards were huge once.
I don't think I've heard anyone mentioned as my finance or fiancée in years! People get engaged still though? I remember being dragged round the shops by a friend looking for fiancée one as they were rare!
These cards in boxes were very fancy with lots of slush.
You find some markets still sell these sort of cards.

ineedaknittedhat · 14/06/2019 21:25

You can still find them on Ebay 😁

DaisyDreaming · 14/06/2019 21:39

I remember looking back at the cards my mum had in the past and thinking they were so special. Does anyone remember the fluffy cards from the early 2000’s. Often bang on the door style with things like pink fluff and silver strands around the edge. I’ve been trying to find them for years but can’t!

BlueMerchant · 14/06/2019 21:44

Absolutely love padded cards. Brings back special memories. Smile

Justgivemesomepeace · 14/06/2019 21:50

When my mum passed away we found a bunch of these that boyfriends had sent to me and my sister when were teens. I couldnt chuck them away quick enough. No idea why on earth she kept them.

Craftycorvid · 14/06/2019 21:57

Initially read this as ‘padded cardis’ and envisioned very Home Counties ladies in quilted outer wear and headscarves...., Grin. I do recall the padded cards were always mahoosive for some reason.

rockingthelook · 14/06/2019 21:57

It was the sign of true love if your boyfriend bought you a padded car, or a huge massive one! I had a silver key for 18th and 21st, plus horseshoe, and a mini rolling pin on a satin ribbon to carry when I got married :)

rockingthelook · 14/06/2019 21:57

Card !

Shimy · 15/06/2019 09:51

Rocking I hope you put that rolling pin to good use woman! Wink.

Does anyone who was young in the 70s-80s remember Whimsies - tiny china figures of animals? I had an owl and a dog and a few others.

x2boys · 15/06/2019 10:03

Wade whimsies ,yes I remember having a horse and something else .

Beheuehyu · 15/06/2019 10:06

I found them disappointing- you got all excited thinking it was a present and instead were presented with a shiny version of a polar bear hugging a heart

The80sweregreat · 15/06/2019 10:21

My mil gave me a huge silver bell thing on satin ribbon on our wedding day 30 years ago that was so heavy I nearly dropped it! (They never liked me! )
Plus I got a few small horseshoes.
I think that tat like that has moved on from weddings these days.
I did get a few silver keys when I was 18 and 21 both in said boxes with lots of satin and frills. Didn't open doors or any safes unfortunately.

Shimy · 15/06/2019 12:20

Didn't open doors or any safes unfortunately. 😂😂😂

FFSeverynameisused · 15/06/2019 12:36

yes!

I didn't know what you mean until I saw the photo!

No idea what the point of them was though!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/06/2019 12:44

God this takes me back, my first boyfriend loved buying me padded cards.

And I had loads of whimsies ... all lined up on my MFI bookcase.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/06/2019 12:45

I like them! They're keepsakes. Not put-on--the-shelf-for-a-week-then-bung-in-the-recycling like paper crap.

HennyPennyHorror · 15/06/2019 12:54

Jazzandh Your DH's relative designed the donkey card!!? Tell us more!

SnugglySnerd · 15/06/2019 13:04

I got given a few horseshoes on my wedding day. That was only about 10 years ago.
I enjoy laughing at the terrible naff poetry in cards from a certain relative. She gets very offended if family members send her a normal Christmas or birthday card rather than one that says "special mum/nan/sister" etc

MsVestibule · 15/06/2019 20:05

Ah, I would have loved one of these when I was a fat (I really wasn't) bespectacled teenager in the 80s. It would definitely have meant that my non-existent boyfriend really loved me.

Sadly, I didn't even get my first snog until I was 17, certainly no padded cards.

Unusualusernames · 15/06/2019 22:27

Oh yes! I thought they were the height of sophistication

Dieu · 15/06/2019 22:47

They were always red. In fact, I don't think they did them in any other colour Grin
