padded cards!? The JOY of those boxed delights! Shiny satin...often with a tassel or bow to complete the beauty!

I remember Valentine's Day ones were the best!

Always remember mine.
Twas Valentine's day and received one that said on the front " Darling your an angel" and inside read " and being with you is heavenly " 😱 We did marry but not married now

Oldraver · 14/06/2019 18:01

I used to have loads and only threw them away a few years ago

LuckyLou7 · 14/06/2019 18:04

My granny always used to send me a padded card and she always chose it for the words inside. Consequently, on her birthday, I always had to make sure I got her a card with cloyingly sweet and sentimental verses. I actually miss scouring card shops for appropriate granny cards, everyone gets a 'happy birthday' greeting from me on Facebook these days. And granny passed away almost 20 years ago, bless her.

SapatSea · 14/06/2019 18:07

I remember girls dragging them into school to show off on Valentine's day.

I never got one and still don't understand how to get people to buy me presents etc.

I worked in a newsagents that sold them, some were furry. The really big ones came in a box! My boss was so pleased when we sold one because of the huge mark up on them.

We also sold large single tier boxes of chocolates in different shapes with different pastoral scenes on them with a ribbon and bow on the corner. My granny loved a box of those with Black magic inside, oh the glamour!

TSSDNCOP · 14/06/2019 18:09

I got the keys at 18 and 21. Also the horseshoes and rolling pins on ribbon on my wedding day in 1999.

My family are martyrs to the kitsch.

zen1 · 14/06/2019 18:09

I used to fantasise about receiving one, but they were considered “luxury” cards.

QuitMoaning · 14/06/2019 18:12

I still get them!
I loathe them ( in fact hate a lot of cliche romantic gestures) so my OH gets the every time as a joke which only he finds funny

I keep telling him that they are a waste of money but this seems to energise him. He uses the same card shop and they save him the “worst” ones. I want to go and tell them to stop it.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 14/06/2019 18:15

Oh yes that was the height of fancy stuff. Did anyone collect fancy paper? I had a significant collection as a kid in the 80’s. Scented paper was the best.

upple · 14/06/2019 18:16

This is mine from 1967. Grin

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 14/06/2019 18:19

Yes! If you got one of these for Valentine’s Day you were winning at life Grin

upple · 14/06/2019 18:21

2nd attempt.

Any one remember Gordon Fraser Cards, they were rather nice.

mabelsgarden · 14/06/2019 18:27

@upple that is ace! Grin

I used to think padded cards were naff and cheesy, but I love them now LOL! Grin

I think I have 3 or 4 in the attic somewhere. God knows where! The attic is rammed with shit! Grin

ChicCroissant · 14/06/2019 18:35

Oh yes, bought and received plenty in my time.

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/06/2019 18:38

Uple I remember those Gordon Fraser Cards

user1492729177 · 14/06/2019 18:38

I loved my padded cards but they took up so much room to store

Dahlietta · 14/06/2019 18:41

One of DH relatives designed the donkey card!

How has this slipped by unnoticed?! Woah!

LuxuryWoman2018 · 14/06/2019 18:45

A boyfriend bought me one once but obviously didn’t read it properly because it was for ‘a wonderful son’ so that was confusing.

jennymanara · 14/06/2019 18:45

I got one of them as a valentine's card from my first proper boyfriend at 16. It was in a box. Although I was pleased to get a card, I secretly thought it was tacky.

GabsAlot · 14/06/2019 18:50

Oh yes very 70s my GD got us all one most years MUm also got me an 18 and 21 keys

MrsMonkeyBear · 14/06/2019 19:20

I remember these from the early 90s too. I have a vague recollection of buying on for my mum for mothers day out of the Naafi on the RAF base we lived on. My 8/9 year old brain thought they were amazing but now they are verging glittery wine bottle tackiness.

The80sweregreat · 14/06/2019 19:38

Yes, I do remember them but I never received one. I always missed out on the mushy / romantic things.

RuthW · 14/06/2019 19:42

I have a big box full of them!

SurferRona · 14/06/2019 19:54

My Dad bought these for my Mum. Christmas, birthday and anniversary. She'd roll her eyes as they were 'a stupid waste of money'. It took quite a few years for us to realise that he stored them safely in a secret stash and recycled them to her GrinGrin- and despite her annoyance at the waste of money, his recycling of them annoyed her too Grin

SerenDippitty · 14/06/2019 20:17

DH used to buy them for me. But my favourite card from him was a huge non padded Valentine card with a picture of a dog (a real one) on the front which said “ What do you call someone who loves you?” And inside it said “Me!”.
