padded cards!? The JOY of those boxed delights! Shiny satin...often with a tassel or bow to complete the beauty!

I remember Valentine's Day ones were the best!

My dad bought one for my mum Christmas early 1970s - my mum still has it and puts it out every year. It has become a family tradition!!!

1forAll74 · 14/06/2019 14:31

I had quite a few of those padded cards in the oldie days. I always used to send them to my late Mum on her birthdays too.she only seemed to like cards with flowers on.

I had a few sent to me when I was ( sweet and lovely ha ha) They were usually sent by the many boyfriends I had then, all pledging undying love to me,,they seemed to think that the bigger the card was,and the more padded it was, meant that their love was special ha ha.

tobee · 14/06/2019 14:32

Never received one Sad

The fact they came in a box made them interesting!

1forAll74 · 14/06/2019 14:39

I surprisingly had a padded luxury card when I was 70, sent by my son,who never usually sends cards. It had two kittens on the front, and on opening, there was a quite tinny rendition of Happy birthday to You that played. I am a cat person, with three of them.

crosspelican · 14/06/2019 14:40

Yes! I think there must be one from my christening still kicking around in the attic somewhere. They were brilliant.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 14/06/2019 14:41

Oh yes, the joy of receiving a "boxed" card! My grandmother would send them to me but nothing compared to the delight of receiving one sent "To my Girlfriend".

nickymanchester · 14/06/2019 16:23

My dad used to buy these for my mum. I assumed I would receive them when I was grown up too (I didn't!)

The same with me as well.

Alsohuman · 14/06/2019 16:26

I did too. Never got one so I guess l’m still not grown up!

ScreamingValenta · 14/06/2019 16:26

Yes, but none came my way.

TSSDNCOP · 14/06/2019 16:30

I received many. Often accompanied by a red rose in a plastic see-through tube.

Along with a Ford Escort, it was the mark of the devoted and keeper boyfriend in the early 80’s.

flissfloss65 · 14/06/2019 16:34

I noticed padded Father’s Day cards in the Card Factory yesterday. It did indeed take me back to the ‘80’s.

I remember my first boyfriend getting me one which I ripped up when we stopped seeing each other.

BarkandCheese · 14/06/2019 16:36

I don’t remember ever getting one, but I remember buying them, especially for my grandmother who loved a good, over the top card.

MrsTommyBanks · 14/06/2019 16:38

Yes! If your boyfriend didn't get you a padded card you had every right to feel disappointed.
A HUGE card in a massive cardboard envelope was an acceptable 2nd best Grin

PlatypusPie · 14/06/2019 16:41

I do remember scented cards - particularly pungent rose smell, as well. Also scented notepaper - presumably for writing 'Thank you so much for the lovely card (which the dog ate when it came through the door because he assumed it was edible)'

MrsTommyBanks · 14/06/2019 16:42

Loving the donkey.

Furry wallpaper - flock wallpaper.

jazzandh · 14/06/2019 16:46

One of DH relatives designed the donkey card!

AlunWynsKnee · 14/06/2019 16:47

My boyfriend used to get them for me along with the silk roses etc. He was a nice guy. Probably shouldn't have dumped him.

codemonkey · 14/06/2019 16:49

I remember them. Particularly the enormous A1 size ones. They're an ecological nightmare really. What a waste of resources for something that's destined for landfill after a week. I can imagine the Twitter outrage if they became fashionable again.

Ohyesiam · 14/06/2019 16:49

Eewwww yes. They were often made of satin.
What was that all about?

TSSDNCOP · 14/06/2019 16:52

codemonkey you didn’t throw them away. You kept them so the subsequent boyfriends accidentally saw them and understood what was expected, then you filled up your DF’s loft with them.

DasMumBoot · 14/06/2019 16:54

Oh gosh yes I do. Had forgotten all about those. Some of them were huge.

x2boys · 14/06/2019 16:59

I never had one of these I always used to covet, them, I was never one of the "cool girls " who got to snog their boyfriend against the interchange( bus station) walk at home time eitherSad

cliffy69 · 14/06/2019 17:02

Anyone else remember white dog turds and some seriously fucking banging music? GrinGrin

notatwork · 14/06/2019 17:03

I remember the cards you'd get as a kid that had little plastic windows to shove a couple of quid in - you knew you got one from the weight/bulkiness before you even opened it and out of politeness still pretended you were surprised when you opened it Grin

When I was a kid you couldn't tell if someone had put a pound in the card because it was a pound note.

But I did get a padded card from my 6th form boyfriend with a red stitched satin heart and a rabbit on.

Jaxhog · 14/06/2019 17:05

Don't they still have them? Oh no! That explains a lot...
