To hate 'portmanteau' words for clothes?

MyGastIsFlabbered · 13/06/2019 21:45

Jegging
Tregging
Coatigan
Shacket

Etc. I don't know why they bother me so much but they make me wince. Anyone else?

OP posts:

Portmanteau words are very useful. "I've sharted my shitie/treggings" (delete as applicable) is compact yet evocative.

FancyAPint · 14/06/2019 06:52

people who use these words (apart from jeggings which is very sensible Grin ) are probably the same people who have labradoodles or cockapoos

Potatopia · 14/06/2019 06:53

I once read a magazine article about "skops" - skirts combined with tops. Aka dresses!

Littlepond · 14/06/2019 07:04

Oh OP you’d hate me as I Portman-whatever (never heard of the word before!) so many words in my every day life. I love jeggings and treggings and often make my kids a hamwich or a jamwich. Like a PP I have many couple friends with brilliant smooshed name names. Language is awesome.

Myusernameismud · 14/06/2019 07:08

Now potatopia I can understand it if it's a skirt and top sort of sown together so they look like separate things ifswim? But if it's literally just a dress then that's plain silly.

I lived in a student house where a lot of Cofftea was drunk.

(for those that have never walked the ragged edges of civilisation as I have, it's a beverage made with instant coffee and a teabag in the same mug)

TurquoiseDress · 14/06/2019 07:14

GrinGrin

I've only heard of jeggings, the others made me laugh out loud!

Myusernameismud · 14/06/2019 07:28

Oh Sniv that sounds awful. Was there any particular reason for drinking that?!

My cousin and I mixed a can of coke with a can of lemonade when we were about 7 or 8. Tasted quite nice, cokalade.

DearLady · 14/06/2019 08:27

Cofftea? No. I can’t even... If my tea cup has been used for coffee before, I can detect it straight away.

Branleuse · 14/06/2019 08:36

Mandals is a personal favourite, for mens sandals. I love any attempt at inserting the word man into an item for men

LakieLady · 14/06/2019 09:06

When I was slim enough to wear cropped tops instead of steel-reinforced bras, my then partner named them brests (bra + vest).

Anarchyshake · 14/06/2019 09:21

Mandigans. Those twee cardigans made for men, usually near Christmas, knitted with a few chunky buttons at the front and a strip of pattern across the mid section and arms.

RiversDisguise · 14/06/2019 09:23

I love my sheets of satin.... my shat-ins.Wine

DearLady · 14/06/2019 09:25

Yes, my DH can rock a mandigan, for sure.

SinkGirl · 14/06/2019 09:27

Was there ever a word for David Beckham’s man-sarong?

Sir-ong?

drspouse · 14/06/2019 09:27

I meanly go on about DH's mansturiser. AKA dry skin lotion.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 14/06/2019 09:30

Shitie 🤣

Can also be used when you shit on your nightie.

codemonkey · 14/06/2019 09:33

When my dad does my son's lunch he makes him a 'gromelette' (grandad's omelette). Another one of my faves Grin

SpamChaudFroid · 14/06/2019 09:35

Mantrum. I know it's not clothes but it is a portmanteau I enjoy using.

ChodeofChodeHall · 14/06/2019 09:35

Shitie

😂

DearLady · 14/06/2019 09:36

SinkGirl, so-wrong 😂 (he did look cute, though!)

When ever I see shoe-boot or shoobootie... I always hear Prince singing “Shooooboootay!”
Imagine a much cooler version of MJ’s “Sham-Oh!”. If you will...

MerryMarigold · 14/06/2019 09:42

We do this a lot. My personal favourite is what ds2 (10) calls it when I make burgers: "Mum, are we having Mumdonalds tonight?"

whothedaddy · 14/06/2019 09:49

I have no contribution but this thread has made me smile this morning. Thank you

Mildmanneredmum · 14/06/2019 10:13

Me too. This has made me laugh out loud, especially the "shitie"!

SpamChaudFroid · 14/06/2019 10:42

Duffin - delicious in spite of their silly name.
