To hate 'portmanteau' words for clothes?

MyGastIsFlabbered · 13/06/2019 21:45

Jegging
Tregging
Coatigan
Shacket

Etc. I don't know why they bother me so much but they make me wince. Anyone else?

OP posts:
thenightsky · 13/06/2019 22:56

Never head of shacket. Is it a cross between a shed and jacket? Confused

frenchonion · 13/06/2019 22:57

A little interesting fact...it was Lewis Carrol who crested the first portmanteau in Alice in Wonderland.

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 13/06/2019 22:57

skousers 1999 ish IIRC?

I rocked that look. I was 21 and awesome.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2019 22:59

Socktopus

@MaggieFS I think Lewis Carrol was responsible - his were much better than shacket though!

DontCallMeShitley · 13/06/2019 23:00

I thought everyone called the sock hanger thing a socktopuss. Why wouldn't you?

I'm just going to put my shitie on (shirt style nightie)

DontCallMeShitley · 13/06/2019 23:02

I hate 'coatigan' not only the word but they are so bloody ugly.

Jeggings makes sense but none of the others do, they are just plain stupid, like a red lip or a black pump.

drspouse · 13/06/2019 23:04

Shawligan.
But yes, YANB at all U.

jackstini · 13/06/2019 23:13

Howling at shitie and shumper! 🤣

Dd has a drumper - I would call it a jumper-dress

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 13/06/2019 23:18

I discovered recently that Americans call denim shorts “jorts”. I’m hoping that doesn’t spread to here.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 13/06/2019 23:20

I’m howling here.
Please stop or I shall wake the baby

I also hate “a strong lip”. As opposed to a weak one

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 13/06/2019 23:20

Drumper sounds like a new trendy fish

JustTwoMoreSecs · 13/06/2019 23:24

I love the expression «portemanteau words» literally in French it means «clothes hook word» , it doesn’t make any sense, which makes it funny.
Sorry for my poor contribution to the thread...

apparently pancake is one.pan and cake!
and pokemon from the japanese brand pocket monsters

NeckPainChairSearch · 13/06/2019 23:38

My eyes recently melted at 'Janties.' If they aren't a sodding portmanteau tipping point, I don't know what will be.

MustDust · 13/06/2019 23:39

Ah, I call my socktopus an octopeg, I feel I have portmanteau'd it wrong all these years now.

thatonesmine · 13/06/2019 23:42

Socktopus is a great word, I'm adopting it. My favourite portmanteau word is insinnuendo.

NeverSayFreelance · 13/06/2019 23:53

Oh my god I've never heard the word coatigan but I'm definitely going to use it 😂 that's a hilarious word

altiara · 13/06/2019 23:55

MustDust I’ve been calling mine a Sock Octopus. Two separate words! I’m a complete failure! Sad

PositiveVibez · 14/06/2019 00:16

Shumper. Oh my god. that made my stomach go funny 😂. Divorce him PP!!

Loving the shitie though.

But janties. Just no.

TwinMummy1510 · 14/06/2019 01:12

Not a piece of clothing.....but if anyone uses the word chillax in my company they are putting themselves in severe danger 😅😅😅

Someone mentioned words being used as verbs....when people use the word glitter as a verb it gives me the rage. You do not “glitter a glass” you “apply glitter to a glass”. God it’s annoying!!!

SpamChaudFroid · 14/06/2019 01:50

Twofer- that’s a blazer style jacket with a weird shirt sewn in.

Please say this isn't true!

Myusernameismud · 14/06/2019 06:45

Shawligan is a new one on me, but I feel like I need one.

It's spread to food now too, cronut for example. There's a few others, maybe a cruffin or have I just made that up?!

Myusernameismud · 14/06/2019 06:45

Oh or is it a cronuffin?!
