Spain and spiders?

Hello mumsnetters. Me Dp, DD and DS are going away next year to Spain and was wondering how many of you have seen large spiders there? I have a huge phobia and decided to research dangerous wildlife to be aware of and now i am freaking out. Hoping you lovely mumsnetters will be able to put my mind at ease.

I lived there for a while and didn't see anything other than your general housespider out there and we lived next to woods.

SuzieBishop · 10/06/2019 18:57

I’ve been to mainland Spain and plenty of the Islands and I’ve honestly never seen a spider!!

fromthefloorboardsup · 10/06/2019 19:02

Where are you going? I lived in North Eastern Spain for a year and didn't see any (I also hate them)

AshQ · 10/06/2019 19:02

Never saw any!

statetrooperstacey · 10/06/2019 19:12

Been to Spain many times never seen a spider! Lots of lizards tho.

Dec2019mumtobe · 10/06/2019 19:15

I want to Spain for a week two years ago and I didn't see one single spider

Newnewnewnames · 10/06/2019 19:17

Not seen any spiders either! But thank you - that's only just occured to me!
~but flying beasties - there's a million varieties..~

Novia · 10/06/2019 19:19

I live in the suburbs of a big Spanish city and have often remarked to DH that it's weird we never see spiders here! Honestly - far, far more (and bigger) spiders in the UK. Occasionally get a wispy one in the corner of the room, but apart from that - teeny tiny.

Liverbird77 · 10/06/2019 19:28

It is the cockroaches you need to be aware of! (Spanish husband).

Ellona · 10/06/2019 22:30

Thank you for all of your response's that has definetly put my mind at ease and also got me thinking about cockroaches and flying beasties lool.
We are going to Costa del Sol its south.
Im actually shocked that non of you have seen any at all or just house spiders.

Ten years in Costa Blanca, one large, chunky spider (outside in garden) thousands of cockroaches especially when the sanitation department gasses the sewers, because they stream out of the manholes. They also fly when temperatures are high enough for their wings to develop. Vile things. On the bright side, praying mantis are a joy to behold.
If you're only going for a couple of weeks you probably won't see anything.
Have a great time ☺️

Ellona · 11/06/2019 19:05

Thank you so much everyone. Looks like the cockroaches will be the main worry. Feeling more excited now as will be the childrens first holiday abroadSmile

I've been to the Costa del sol over twenty times and I don't remember ever seeing a spider.
A couple of cockroaches and loads of lizards but no spiders.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2019 19:13

We have a property in southern Spain so we spend a lot of time there and now you’ve asked I can honestly I’ve never seen a spider.
Unfortunately if you dont like bugs there are a few other things that might freak you out but nothing that can really hurt you

AguerosAngel · 11/06/2019 19:36

We spend a lot of time in Southern Spain and I can honestly say I’ve never encountered any spiders,

Cockroaches however........Envy

SrSteveOskowski · 11/06/2019 19:49

I had to share a shower with a cockroach once in Spain. He just refused to get out, so it was a case of "Grand so, move over because I'm getting in". I left him alone, so he left me alone.

Same with the little lizards. They just scuttle past ( I didn't see that many of them) and try to stay out of humans way.

Hazlenutpie · 11/06/2019 19:51

We go to Spain a lot and I've never seen a spider there.

spongebunnyfatpants · 11/06/2019 20:01

I used to work there and never saw any spiders, only massive ants and cockroaches.

Amanduh · 11/06/2019 20:02

Been to Spain at least 20 times. Never seen a spider. Or a cockroach!

SilverySurfer · 11/06/2019 20:10

Describing spiders as dangerous wildlife is a bit OTT Grin

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 11/06/2019 20:12

No, not spiders, but every time I go I seem to have a close encounter with a praying mantis and they freak me out!! shudder

Loads of ants too which are so annoying.

I love the little lizards though they’re adorable.

Jamhandprints · 11/06/2019 20:15

Lived in Spain for 2 years, never saw a spider or a cockroach.

HappyGirlNow · 11/06/2019 20:19

I think you need to address your phobia rather than worry how many spiders are in Spain. Phobias are super easy for hypnotherapists or NLP practitioners to get rid of, it could be completely gone in as little as 15 minutes.. really, it’s that easy...

Nothingoriginalhere · 11/06/2019 20:23

We have a house in Spain ( almeria provence) and see cockroaches and have seen 1 scorpion. Nothing much to worry about - used to live in Saudi and absolutely hated the flying roaches, the very many scorpions and other horrible things.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 11/06/2019 20:25

I have lived in Spain and visit relatively often.

There are fewer spiders than in the UK - people tend to live in concrete houses or high-rise flats. Spiders don't really link that sort of environment. I have only ever seen tiny ones - nothing like the huge beasts you get in the UK in the autumn when they walk into your house from the garden.

I have never seen any cockroaches in houses, flats or hotels either. I only ever saw a bunch of them at a house that was a building site with holes in the ground for pipes etc.

Enjoy your holiday Smile
