IIRC when he played the dying father in Inception, he was actually seriously ill with cancer himself in real life.

I've just watched an audience with Billy Conolly, it was hard to find a celebrity in the audience who is still alive. I watch the old soaps in the afternoon, today in Emmerdale over half the cast are now dead.
