Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

Fairweathercyclist - full time people are paid even though they are not at work on a bank holiday Monday therefore if you don't work Mondays you are entitled to a paid day off (pro-rata) to make it fair. If this isn't happening for you your employer is breaking the law.

Fucking hell, I've heard it all now.

I didn't know this was happening and don't really care, but it seems that some people really are making a mountain out of what isn't even a molehill.

Well, in my case, I get all Mondays off unpaid. For most people who do work Mondays, the bank holiday is a paid day off. Next year I will get an extra day off and still be paid for it.

Are there any legal guidelines for this? I am in teaching and don't get bank holidays pro-rata. I even queried it with my union and they said there was no obligation. The only time I did get a pro-rata day off was when they put in an additional holiday for the jubilee.

I've been to a couple of weddings over bank holiday weekends that are held on the Sunday. I think if you had your wedding booked on the Saturday it might be mildly irritating, if you have it booked for a Sunday it could have a real impact on people attending/leaving early etc.

So some of them waited a couple of years to get the exact date that they wanted, and now they no longer have a bank holiday weekend as having the day before the wedding is no good.

It's not the Friday before that it's been moved to anyway, it's the Friday after. A totally different weekend. It's not the same weekend just with the Monday swapped for the Friday

Amazed by the people saying this isn't short notice. All my key business events are booked 13-14 months ahead. School term dates are usually set well over a year in advance. Any conference speaker with a national reputation will be booked more than a year ahead.

It's yet another sign of this government's complete incompetence and inability to understand life outside Westminster.

soulrider yes, sorry got my dates muddled when I was typing, but point being, the day being on the Friday is no use to anyone in that situation.

It would be awful for people with Sunday weddings who planned it around the bank holiday.

When my cousin got married they hired the private venue from Friday to Monday and the bride and grooms immediate family all stayed and they used the pool, hottub, had bbq's etc. If you had planned your whole wedding around something like that , it would be annoying because a lot of people will either have to now book a days holiday or go home early.

If people go on a real bender at a wedding and lots do, then on a long weekend they could recover from their hangover on Sunday knowing that they are travelling home on Monday.

On the contrary, school staff don't book their holidays, so it will be re-arranged for them automatically.

Yes, but if a member of school staff had already booked a weekend away for the original date of the bank holiday weekend then they are buggered. They can’t book time off.

It is tied to traditions and celebrations that can go back hundreds of years - think of the Hobby Horse festivities in Padstow; Beltane in Scotland; choral singing at dawn in Oxford; Jack in the Green in multiple places etc

The choristers sing on Mayday i.e. May 1st, not on the bank holiday.

I know someone that specifically booked their wedding for the Sunday as they know that most people have to travel to it - therefore travel on Saturday, wedding Sunday, travel BH Monday.
We will now struggle to attend wedding as kids are due in school on the Monday now.

Alot of stupid people on here!
Statutory holiday is 5.6 weeks eg that the LAW.
So 4 days a week is 5.6 x 4 = 22.6 days rounds upto 23 days holiday.
No employer has to give you a BH off you can be asked to work them.
But the formula above means part time employees get a portion of the BH off too.
I work Tue to Thursday 3 days. Very few BH occur on these days. Yet i get a portion of BHs too. Eg 3 x 5.6 = 16.8 rounded upto 17 days. You could say 4 weeks plus 5 BH days.
Op the fact tis hat in the past you have had BH off on the day they occur execpt for Good Friday. You now have a BH day that can be taken off on a non BH day. Maybe the actual Monday if you are lucky.

Totally agree the day should be a bank holiday. Absolutely we should celebrate the end of the war and bloodshed.

However I think they should have added an extra BH like they did a few years ago (for something I can't remember 🤦🏼‍♀️).

Won't affect me as work in education. It's just a different day off!

But they could have added the day onto the summer term or back a day early for autumn 1 like they did before. It will be lovely for our children to have street parties and remember how lucky they are to have the freedom and opportunities they do 75 years later.

All those people who are not happy because they will ‘lose out’ due to being part time, that isn’t the case.
My point wasn't about losing out financially. It was about feeling the benefit. Everyone who works 5 days, M-F, only works 4 on a BH week. I always work 4 days (with Mondays off), so a BH Monday makes no difference to my week. A Friday will.

I work for a small business I get bank holidays and 20 days pro rata. I work hard but 4 days a week. We have no hr if I ask for an extra days holiday to cover govt plans I will basically be making trouble. It is hard to get 4 days in my industry at the salary and level I am on so I will just be told to suck it up.

Not stupid enough to realise that not everyone is employed in a 9-5 Monday- Friday job. It affects everyone differently or not at all. I’m self employed and Dh is a shift worker (police), it will affect us both in different ways and neither sorted out by your patronising explanation.

Yes! 7 teachers at my school have booked a weekend holiday abroad where we are due to come back on the Monday (team building of course 😉). We're all panicking now!

I imagine some shuffling of "inset" days will be going on next year Wink

I am insanely jealous of people who can work part time and I'm still sulking at having to take Christmas Eve as annual leave last year only for them to close the office which meant the part timer who was meant to be working got an extra day's leave and I "wasted" one of my precious days. So slightly limited sympathy here.

But OP I understand your frustrations but can't you just swap your Friday clients to the Monday? (as an aside I'm very curious as to what your job is)

I wonder what everyone did back in 1995 when this also happened?
I get that if you've pre-booked certain things how it can be a "inconvenience" but it's to celebrate 75 year Anniversary of VE Day.
Also the comments about losing out re holiday leave, no one really loses out as annual leave is calculated on days/hours you work for the year.
Main thing is we celebrate VE Day.
