This is slightly off-topic - this is in relation to an extradition bill that would allow China to extradite fugitives from Hong Kong. Police are escalating their techniques against protesters.

This is what Trump says about the HK protests - he makes it about him, as per usual.

President Trump on Hong Kong demonstrations: "They're massive demonstrations. I looked today and that really is a million people. A lot of times people talk about they had 2,000 people but it was really 1,000 or it was 200. I see it all the time."

TheClaws · 13/06/2019 02:19

He also says he probably would not call the FBI if a foreign entity offered him dirt on a political rival. Isn’t this equivalent to his saying “Yes, I’ve already done it, and I’ll do it again - so what?” Remember, this is the President of the United States talking here.

This is from a press conference Trump just gave on the WH lawn, so it’s minutes ago about a person who just a couple of weeks ago brutally executed some his top generals at an airport. The supposed reason: the failure of the Vietnam NK/US summit. This is grotesque and unexplainable.

However, his cult thinks this is a-ok. Of course, there’s lots of whataboutism - “Hillary did it!” “Dems did it, but it’s different standards for them, isn’t it ...” Anything to excuse the open admission of the POTUS that he would gladly accept underhand assistance from a foreign agent if offered, without letting the FBI know.

Cult-45 will focus on the word "foreign".

And try to ignore the idea of "government".

What's significant is that the putative "dirt on Hillary" was election assistance from the government of a foreign power. A foreign power which wants favours from Trump after they've helped make him president (even if the favour is simply that he burns down his country). So that, consciously or not, he's working for the good of the foreign power over the good of the country he's president of.

Foreign individuals are legally permitted to do work on US elections, but are not permitted to be decision-makers or strategists.

It's not just wrt to Russians that the Trump campaign had issues with this...

Staff claim Cambridge Analytica ignored US ban on foreigners working on elections
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/17/cambridge-analytica-non-american-employees-political

[A legal memo to Cambridge Analytica] "made it clear that most senior and mid-level positions involving strategy, planning, fundraising or campaigning needed to be filled by US citizens.

“Any decision maker must be a US citizen or green card holder,” the memo, seen by the Observer, warned. It also provided a brief legal history of cases involving foreign involvement in election campaigns, drawn up by a lawyer at the firm founded by former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.

“To the extent you are aware of foreign nationals providing services, including polling and marketing, it would appear that unless it is being done through US citizens, or foreign nationals with green cards, the activity would violate the law.”
[...]
“The prohibition against foreign nationals managing campaigns, including making direct or indirect decisions regarding the expenditure of campaign dollars, will have a significant impact on how Cambridge hires staff and operates in the short term,” the memo stated.

PerkingFaintly · 13/06/2019 11:34

This is why Christopher Steele is not, IIUC, in breach of the law or even an ethical guide.

He was not a government-sponsored entity. He was not making an "in kind" contribution to any campaign. He was not a decision-maker or strategist. He was a researcher paid first by Republicans and then by Democrats, and handed his research over to those US citizens to make decisions.

When he realised how seriously Trump was compromised by the Russians, and the activities of members of Trump's campaign, he handed his further research directly to the FBI.

But, you know, he was foreign. Grin

Office of Special Counsel recommends Kellyanne Conway be removed from federal service for repeated violations of Hatch Act. White House says the report is "deeply flawed." Trump has joked in the past about Hatch Act.

The presumptive penalty for violation of the Hatch Act is dismissal. When I was a federal employee, I received extensive training on this point.

Why should Kellyanne Conway be treated differently from any other federal employee? She has violated the Hatch Act multiple times.
twitter.com/renato_mariotti/status/1139209814008127490?s=21

I was just standing in an office in the WH press office when Kellyanne Conway came in. I asked for her reaction to this. She pointed to the door and said “can you leave, please?” Later, I asked her again, and she said: “I have no reaction. Why would I give you a reaction?“

Meanwhile, the press office offers this comment: “The Office of Special Counsel’s (OSC) unprecedented actions against Kellyanne Conway are deeply flawed and violate her constitutional rights to free speech and due process.“

The statement continues: “Others, of all political views, have objected to the OSC’s unclear and unevenly applied rules which have a chilling effect on free speech for all federal employees.“
