Trump crowd now chanting 'Send her back' (in relation to Ilhan Omar).

Meanwhile:

www.latimes.com/politics/story/2019-07-17/house-vote-hold-ross-barr-in-contempt-2020-census-citizenship

'WASHINGTON — The House voted Wednesday to hold Atty. Gen. William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with its subpoenas seeking information about why the Trump administration wanted to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.'

Only going to get worse. Trump is a one trick pony and he thinks this is how he won in 2016.

The difference is that politicians in other countries thought he was going to lose then. I wonder how Johnson will deal with this going forward? He obviously has his own problems with racism, but is trying to promote the idea that he can forge a closer relationship with America. How does that look as Trump's behaviour becomes more unhinged and dangerous?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 07:08

I've been reading with utter horror this morning. What happened at the rally last night was totally abhorrent.

MerdedeBrexit · 18/07/2019 08:26

OYBBK - what bothers me even more than the rally is that it seems opponents of Trump and his supporters now believe the only way to counteract this disgusting racism is to literally form an army against their fellow countrymen, if I have understood correctly. He is fomenting civil war whilst pretending to be a patriot.

MerdedeBrexit · 18/07/2019 08:27

When I say literally, I probably mean actually.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 08:29

Can you give me some links Merdede I'd need to read it for myself.

MerdedeBrexit · 18/07/2019 08:41

It's on Twitter, OYBBK and I am hoping that in my not had my second cup of covfeve yet this morning haze, I misunderstood Ted Lieu when he wrote this:

Ted Lieu Retweeted Neera Tanden

Did the #TrumpRally horrify you? If so, read this tweet below and take action.

Ted Lieu added,

Neera Tanden

You know what defeats the hatefulness of Trumpism? The largest electoral margin defeat since Goldwater. That is what he deserves. A humiliating, historic landslide loss. And that is actually possible. But it takes a bigger coalition than your twitter bubble. Build the army.

Shortly after reading the above, I saw the attached tweet, from "The Persistence", also under the hashtag Trump Rally. It is very possible I conflated the two to make civil war. I do hope so!

I wouldn't take 'build the army's literally. It sounds like a rallying cry to gather support against Trump.

PerkingFaintly · 18/07/2019 08:56

Confused I don't read the Neera Tandon tweet as calling for violence at all. In fact the very opposite – it's calling for people to vote the orange one out.

Unless there's some significant context missing, this just looks like the usual call for an army of canvassers, an army of volunteers for phone banks, an army of social media campaigners, etc.

MerdedeBrexit · 18/07/2019 09:06

Thank you for interpreting it correctly for me, must have enough coffee before attempting to interpret tweets from now on!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 09:07

I've done the same early in the morning. Thankfully here has corrected me before my outrage grew too big. Grin

Lweji · 18/07/2019 09:12

She should be careful with such language, though. Because the extremes work in terms of actual armies and will read it as such to justify their militia.

It's too polarised already for such language, IMO.

Roussette · 18/07/2019 09:20

I watched clips of his Rally last night. He really has gone up a notch. It was absolutely disgusting... the whole audience screaming 'send her back' re Ilhan Omar. This is a woman who (against all odds) won I think 78% in Minnesota, yet the braying crowd are shouting that.

Like we've said before on here... where's the low?

MerdedeBrexit · 18/07/2019 10:59

I believe that unless the Democratic Party decides quickly to put their full weight of support behind one candidate, and one candidate alone, with no bickering amongst factions, they are paving the way for a second term for Trump. As my husband pointed out to me yesterday, it is rare for the incumbent President to be ousted, but it really needs to be done, for all of our futures, not just the poor American citizens who directly suffer from Trump's disgraceful behaviour. But we genuinely don't see that he will be stopped in 2020. What to do, what to do?

Whosorrynow · 18/07/2019 11:10

Rachel maddow was speculating that this latest escalation is a reflection of the alarm in the White House about developments in the Epstein case

It seems to me that the level of depravity with regard to racism is beginning to line up with the level of depravity exhibited by Epstein, what I'm getting at here is the in trumps unconscious mind there is some calculation that if his base is on board with a certain level of depravity in one area (racial hatred) then they will will accept and accommodate a similar level of depravity in other areas (sexual crimes against women and girls)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 11:10

I agree Merdede Any little cracks in the Democrats are and will continue to be split open, much in the same way as rain can split rocks. They need to put aside infighting and rivalries and unite.

Lweji · 18/07/2019 11:18

Yes, they'll need to run a positive candidate choice, rather than pointing fault with eachother.
It's good to see that they want it, though, rather than having a candidate for show.

But the main thing, IMO, is to avoid the old, establishment, candidates with lots of damaging baggage.

lionheart · 18/07/2019 11:38

Yes, Who.

Epstein and Mueller.

I suppose it is too soon and the wrong moment for AOC? My other pick, for further in the future, would be that anti NRA Parkland shooting survivor whose name I have, of course, forgotten. I think he is now at Harvard and is still under threat of being murdered by NRA supporters. I would also appreciate Michelle Obama standing (I know she won't), but given the worsening misogynistic racism that is currently acceptable, I wonder if she would be supported? How about a film star or TV personality who openly votes Democrat? (Not quite joking.)
Are there any people out there to watch, who might achieve everything they need to wipe the floor with Trump (metaphorically), do you think?

Apologies for hijacking this thread ever so slightly, but I have a question of you wise lot, which has been bothering me.

I am a avid follower of current affairs and quite often seen the concern (also on this thread) that Trump may win again in 2020. Now, as we are all aware he only won 2016 by approx 70 000 votes spread across 3 states. There are also low turnout. I see this time as being the apex of his support - there seems to be no evidence that he is increasing his voter base. So the way I see it is that he is playing a game of ever decreasing circles with previous Trump voters being chipped off every time he goes a little bit further (the rally last night being a case in point). With this in mind and if we can assume that a number of his 2016 voters were due to Hillary hatred i.e. it was against Hillary rather than for Trump, surely if the Democrat party put up anyone apart from a half crazed loon, we can fairly safely bet that the Democrats will win more votes than Trump, seeing as he didn't have fantastic numbers to start with and these have only decreased?

I appreciate the gerrymandering etc will have had an effect and
it isn't as simplistic as above, but am I missing something really obvious?
