The House has decided (on this phrasing at least).

www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/house-vote-resolution-condemning-trump-s-racist-comments-n1030266

'"These comments from the White House are disgraceful and disgusting and the comments are racist," Pelosi said as she introduced a resolution condemning Trump's incendiary remarks about four Democratic congresswoman.

"Every single member of this institution, Democratic and Republican, should join us in condemning the president's racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people. I urge a unanimous vote," Pelosi said.'

Isn't there a Parliamentary rule against calling a Member a liar? Or maybe it's just a convention, a gentleman's agreement.

Perking and OYBBK re: anti-semitism - I saw an interesting comment along the lines of ‘You can be an anti-Zionist without being an anti-Semite’. I also find it it fascinating Trump is parcelling the US and Israel together.

Being pro-Israel is a big 'thing' with the far right (Trump's biggest 'base'). That's not to say that they are not anti-Semites, they are. They mentally 'tie' Israel in with the Christian 'Holy Land' of the New Testament: Bethlehem, Golgotha, Gethsemane, Nazareth, all the places associated with Christ. THAT is Israel to Trump's base. And that Israel must be protected from the Infidel. Being pro-Israel means you are 'anti-Muslim' (AKA 'terrorists'). And no card carrying member of Trump's base wants to be thought of as (in their words) a 'Muzzie Lover'.

Yep Lion, all those 'that shalt not criticize the President' rules came in AFTER Scrotus was elected. No surprise there!

lionheart · 17/07/2019 02:20

I'm surprised they were organised enough to get it done.

OP posts:
AcrossthePond55 · 17/07/2019 03:54

I'm wondering what Scrotus has on them that they're so eager to do his bidding and protect him.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2019 07:08

That's really interesting Across thank you. So it's just another rally cry, along with his anachronistic 'we hate communism'. The question for me then is, are the echoes of this being driven by particular people (Bannon and others) or is it being amplified by people driving it on social media?

It feels like a 21st century start to the Crusades.

PerkingFaintly · 17/07/2019 09:46

One description I've seen of superficially pro-Zionist behaviour among a particular slice of the US Christian rightwing is that they treat Israel as an End of Days theme park.

They believe the Second Coming will be brought about by a cataclysmic battle at Armageddon (Tel Megiddo, Israel), so are more than happy to do whatever will help bring that battle about.

Which is nice for the folk who live thereabouts.Hmm

So, not really pro-Israel in the long run. More like feeding up the sacrificial lamb...

lionheart · 17/07/2019 11:46

Yes, that too Across. It's a question that will attach itself to every GOP representative now as well as anyone else who supports Trump.

But in the run-up to the election Trump needs 'the squad'. Those four women will stand in for 'Crooked Hillary' this time round.

Not white, not male, not right wing, not compliant, not 'Christian' ...

He needs them.

That very point was brought up by AOC and one of the other Congresswomen (don't remember which), lion. They urged the media and the public NOT to let them and his tweets become the focus of thing. To keep our eyes on what he's doing, not what he's saying. He has a double agenda, putting the focus on anywhere other than where it should be as well as 'dog whistling' his base.

You're right Perking, that is the reason some of the evangelicals support him. They think he's the one who will cause Armageddon and usher in the Second Coming.

OYBBK you raise an interesting point. I'm too young to remember the McCarthy hearings first hand, but I certainly DO remember the Cold War of the early '60s although I was too young to really understand it. But everything was framed around 'The commies will come get us'. They were the bogeymen of the communal American psyche. It was just simply accepted that the USSR was very bad and we were very good. Nowadays, it makes me wonder how much was actual threat and how much was 'Us vs Them'. And it makes me realize that the same thing is being used today to keep the GOP in power.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/07/2019 18:18

I worked out what the dynamic was between Epstein and Trump.

Epstein was what Trump wanted to be: self-made, seriously rich, successful, good-looking, charming and an apparently successful womaniser in a big way.

Trump was (and is) none of these things.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/07/2019 18:30

Scrotus quotes:

2002: “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy,” the future president said. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

vs

2019: “Well, I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. I mean, people in Palm Beach knew him; he was a fixture in Palm Beach. I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don’t think I’ve spoken to him for 15 years. I wasn’t a fan. I was not – yeah, a long time ago. I’d say, maybe 15 years. I was not a fan of his, that I can tell you. I was not a fan of his.”

Lots of questions about where Epstein's money came from, also I've heard that the SDNY have seized numerous incriminating photographs from Epstein's place

still lurking, still horrified, still wondering why the UK press has gone so quiet on the Andrew/Epstein links.

still horrified by the orange one's inane gibbering.

still thinking the world has gone to hell in a handcart...

Rand Paul still thinks he has a shot at becoming president some day lion. He has about as much chance of that as I have of being a Victoria's Secret Angel.

yolo I was wondering the same thing. But I think the UK press has certain restrictions on reporting on the Royal Family, don't they? Or they observe certain 'courtesies' in not printing certain negative stories? Maybe they're just waiting until the cold, hard facts are there re Andrew.

From North Korea - something to keep an eye on.

Spokesperson for DPRK Foreign Ministry on DPRK-U.S. Working-level Talks

Pyongyang, July 16 (KCNA) -- A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) gave the following answer to a question put by KCNA on July 16, with regard to the DPRK-U.S. working-level talks.

At present, there are widespread public opinions across the world concerning an opening of the DPRK-U.S. working-level talks.

The United States is going to conduct a joint military exercise "Alliance 19-2" with south Korea in contravention of the commitments made at the highest level at a time when the working-level talks between the DPRK and the U.S. are on the agenda, which has been made possible by the DPRK-U.S. summit meeting in Panmunjom.

If the military exercise really goes ahead, it would affect the DPRK-U.S. working-level talks.

We will formulate our decision on the opening of the DPRK-U.S. working-level talks, while keeping watch over the U.S. move hereafter. -0-
