Apparently Oakeshott's comment in the Sunday Times article she used to scoop the Observer was:

www.thedailybeast.com/how-a-journalist-kept-russias-secret-links-to-brexit-under-wraps
Their package came complete with a commentary from Oakeshott herself, in which she expressed her shock at the revelations. “I was very surprised by what I found, which conflicted with the public accounts of the relationship with the Russian embassy,” she wrote. “Suddenly the Russian embassy in London had a potential back channel to the White House.”

So it's not like she didn't understand the significance.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/07/2019 15:37

She was also the person who advised Chris Huhne's ex-wife to shop him, and got the woman a prison sentence for perverting the course of justice. I hadn't realised that was the same bad-news journalist.

She definitely seems to be someone who is "better the enemy you know than the friend behind your back".

Trump's tweets today are beyond the pale. Racist and bigoted. Can he sink any lower...

cozietoesie · 14/07/2019 17:30

Yes..........

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/07/2019 17:36

He can certainly try to. It seems to be what he lives for.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/07/2019 22:38

The tweets mentioned upthread; not being on twitter I had to wait for them to come my way. I can't seem to link to it, but transcribed they went
"So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......
....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....
....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-48982172 has comments, including place of origin ones.

I am especially interested, BTW, by the word "viciously". Quite apart from surprise that he can spell it, I would love to know what he thought it meant.

I. Have. No. Words.

In other news, so far no news on ICE raids

Record breaking (there is no bottom):

'No other U.S. president has lost so many Cabinet members in his first term to ethics issues.'

Trump has doubled down on those racist tweets by issuing some more. The addition of Israel here is interesting; it’s quite clear he’s stirring up anti-Semitic sentiment.

So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, “RACIST.” Their disgusting language.....

....and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged. If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2019 07:30

Fascism has clearly thrown off its thin robes of disguise and is now strutting about out in the open.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2019 07:32

Throwing Israel into it is a really interesting development. Yes, anti-semitism is out there, but it is clearly being stirred with a massive spoon both here and in the States.

MerdedeBrexit · 15/07/2019 07:37

Fascism has clearly thrown off its thin robes of disguise and is now strutting about out in the open.
Excellent description, OYBBK. Now, how do we deal with it to prevent its worldwide spread and history repeating itself? (Rhetorical question, really, unless anyone has an answer that would work?!)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/07/2019 11:13

Anyone in Trump's party who is not a Trumpite had better prepare for a re-run of 30th June 1934, I'd suggest.

Lweji · 15/07/2019 11:57

I don't think he was stirring up anti-semitism sentiment with the mention of Israel. Quite the opposite. He is attacking those who criticise Israel.

Not sure he has quite figured out where to stay between his pro-Israel friends (Jared & Bibi) vs his far-right pals.
It seems to me that his anti-Muslim sentiment speaks louder regardless.

Meanwhile...
good thing he wasn't in Paris for this year's parade. He'd want the SS to have these too. Grin

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/14/jet-powered-flyboard-soars-over-paris-for-bastille-day-parade

Also, it seems that Macron took a suggestion from his friend Donald. France is also going to have a Space Force (or something to that effect).

Lweji · 15/07/2019 11:59

On a further note, and as a sequence to previous comments on this thread, have you noticed the coincidence of initials between the Secret Service and the infamous SS?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2019 12:52

I think you are right Lweji, given one of the congresswomen has origins in Palestine.

I heard that tirade. It was disgusting

OP posts:
TheClaws · 16/07/2019 02:15

I’m not so sure, Lweji. There are factions within Israel and the Jewish community; Trump is very much an ally of Bibi. His references are to stoke up the ghosts of Israel - and depending on who you are, these might be different. It is a distraction, but he knows what he is doing here.
