WineIsMyCarb · 08/06/2019 00:02

*Whiskered barley

FFS autocorrect, you clearly weren't around in the 90s!

sproutsandparsnips · 08/06/2019 00:03

Daisies are our silver
Buttercups our gold
These are all the treasures
We can have or hold

And
God be in my head
And in my understanding

And
When lamps are lighted in the town
And boats sail out to sea

cwg1 · 08/06/2019 00:03

Makemeaname · 08/06/2019 00:06

@namechangenecessity is this one you've made yourself? Haven't been able to find a good one - think our organist likes playing at 1.5 speed but even allowing for that loads of songs I can't find.

longtompot · 08/06/2019 00:11

So many songs I thought I had forgotten!

One thing I would love to find out is the songs from the plays we did for end of term assemblies. One we had a Russian song with the chorus Kalinka? Another was about a Panda, but I can't remember much about it.

Coldandfrosty · 08/06/2019 00:13

Light up the fiiiiire

Yinyen · 08/06/2019 00:15

As a hardened atheist by 9 years old. (who would cross their arms and slam their mouth shut during the lords pray,) I still had to go for it during "dance then whenever we may be for I am the Lord of the dance said he..."

what a nostalgic thread!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 08/06/2019 00:17

🎶God knows everyone and God knows me🎶

grimupnorthLondon · 08/06/2019 00:18

@Privateisles we had the talk about Our God Reigns being JP 2'a favourite hymn too. Which is why we had to practise it a billion times when he came to say mass at Coventry during his papal visit (oh the glamour!). "How lovely Oooooon the Mountains are the feet of him......"

AtSea1979 · 08/06/2019 00:18

If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear i’d thank the lord for my fuzzy wuzzy hair.
Loved that one!

Come by yah my lord....we used to sing cum by hand my lord, complete with hand gestures, at primary school age Shock Blush Blush

mazv1953 · 08/06/2019 00:22

How could I have forgotten "When lamps are lighted..." *

LoafofSellotape · 08/06/2019 00:22

Our singing teacher used to march up and down during assembly roaring 'DIABOLICAL!' and 'PATHETIC!' at intervals... Nothing like nice positive constructive criticism hey!

We had a Mrs Robinson who used to do the same, she screamed at us in hymn practice on Friday mornings. It worked though because I remember all the songs mentioned on this thread Grin

My favourite was Sing Hosanna and we sang it in rounds.

'One more step' was our school song.

1975

O can't actually remember Autumn Days ,maybe we didn't sing it.

LoafofSellotape · 08/06/2019 00:24

One we had a Russian song with the chorus Kalinka?

Kalinka, Kalinka Kalinka my friend...?

grimupnorthLondon · 08/06/2019 00:24

OMG @AtSea1979 I had forgotten about the fuzzy wuzzy bear!

AtSea1979 · 08/06/2019 00:28

How is it I know most of the songs mentioned and most of the words to cross over the road etc but I haven’t heard about a knight and his spurs? It’s was definitely come and praise. It was blue with kids faces on it.

I think we may of gone to the same school , we did not sing what I thought were religious songs , but I guess in hindsight some were .
Lord of the dance ,
Morning has broken ,
When I am 64 has a very special place in my heart as we could only practice this occasionally when the head teacher was out of ear shot , we then sung it to him at a special assembly for his retirement. it had him and his wife in tears by the end of it .
He was a much loved and respected man.

We sang Black and White a few times , so i pestered my DM to find out if the record could be bought so I could practice it .
She bought me a Spinners album.
I learnt every song off by heart with in about two weeks , Black and White , Mandy Mine , and Asikatali been my favourites

, black and white , Asiktali the message at the start of this is very poignant , and still little has changed . , Mandy Mine . this is unfortunately a very poor recording but its the only one I could find
BethMaddison · 08/06/2019 00:30

I think I had hearing issues at school as I sang ‘bloody noah built the ark’ and for cauliflowers fluffy I thought it was ‘all grows deadly in the night’

In juniors we had come and praise so at least I could get the words right then

This was the cover we had

Angie169 · 08/06/2019 00:58

Off topic in regards what we sung at school but I have been listening to the Spinners for the past half an hour now and this song always touches a nerve with me as it is a true story.

SS (RMS) Ellan Vannin (the Manx name for the Isle of Man) was built as an iron paddle steamer in 1860 at Meadowside, Glasgow for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. She was originally named Mona's Isle - the second ship in the Company's history to be so named. She served for 23 years under that name before being rebuilt, re-engined and renamed in 1883. As Ellan Vannin she served for a further 26 years before being lost in a storm on 3 December 1909 in Liverpool Bay.

Angie169 · 08/06/2019 00:59

Sorry if that has just brought this happy feel good thread crashing down Sad

freshasthebrightbluesky · 08/06/2019 01:02

I'm a supply teacher and I love it when I'm in schools where they still play these songs in their assemblies!

I've just been singing them to dh and he doesn't remember them Confused He's the same age as me and went to a normal state primary and secondary school!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/06/2019 01:06

I remember most readily the folk songs that we used to sing in assembly when we got a new head teacher in second year juniors. But this thread has jogged my memory and we used to sing all of these in infants and first year juniors. DS was baptised when he was 12 (decided he was a Christian and took himself off to church) and had Sing Hosanna and All Things Bright and Beautiful at his service.

One More Step - loved that! We also used to sing Streets of London in assembly, I had a double whammy because my dad would get his guitar out on a Friday night and sing it - every bloody week!
