To all you wonderful people who advocate matched betting... you do realise that the money you make is straight from the pockets of unfortunate gamblers who aren't as clever as you. Gambling ruins lives. And you're benefitting from that.

Fuckfuckfuck123 · 06/06/2019 08:53

Alcohol ruins lives? I dont see the pubs and alcohol aisles empty ? Same devastating results from alcoholism but thats more socially acceptable, people egging others go on 'have one more'.

As you were 🙈

And matched betting doesn't take money from addicted people. It's literally straight out the bookies pockets. It's more likely to send them bust and stop offering alluring offers than anything!

Readytogogogo · 06/06/2019 09:00

How exactly do you think bookies make they're money? If you make money from matched betting, you are simply taking some of the bookies' profit for yourself. And that profit has come from exploiting less savvy gamblers.

Just made a post about my ex who gambled on another thread. Use that as a warning.

Seriously, step away and mean it. Don't get pissed near places you can gamble either.

I have never known anyone who gambled seriously that didn't fuck their life up somehow.

Shamelessly bookmarking!

Whisky2014 · 06/06/2019 09:26

Hi op. I did matched betting too and then I moved onto gambling. I made £16k but what made me stop what losing £4k. It was done in a matter of minutes and gave me such a shock. I had to go to every bookie account and suspend/close my accounts.

Don't go back to chase losses as it makes it work. Just restrict yourself on the sites and go cold turkey.

Readytogogogo · 06/06/2019 09:31

The last thing I'll say on here. OP, if you continue matched betting, the money you make has come from people who've lost money the way that you just have. If your conscience is cool with that then fill your boots.

ginghamtablecloths · 06/06/2019 09:32

Stop now before the sum grows bigger. Yes, addiction seems shameful but it's very easy to get sucked in. I've a family member who had this problem and the money he owed ran into tens of thousands.

You've obviously got an addictive gene - so have many of us - I have too. Could you play Solitaire instead? It's still addictive but no money changes hands.

Winebottle · 06/06/2019 09:33

I'm surprised at some of the profit figures being banded about for matched betting which is nothing more than gambling couponing.

I got seriously into betting on horses a couple of years ago and made good money out of it but in the end I couldn't stand the emotional roller coaster of it. I was betting a few thousand a day.

If you are annoyed about losing £200, that is a good thing for your susceptibility to gambling addiction. I still remember my sickening losses more than my big wins even though, in financial terms, the wins outweighed the losses and that makes me not want to gamble again.

Go into any bookies and there will be people losing thousands on the FOBTs. Console yourself with the fact that there are always people who have lost a lot more than you have.

readytogogo you could say that about many things. Alcohol is an addiction. People buying alcohol, ensuring continued production of alcohol through supply and demand. Yet you don't get people saying not to drink 'cause others are addicted?

TeaForTheWin · 06/06/2019 09:43

I used to work in a bookies and slot machines were the absolute worst for this. I saw people come in every other day and blow three or four grand on them. They made more than half our takings. Far more addictive than the other stuff. Once a guy blew 15 grand. I wanted to have a word with him (as per our duty of care) but apparently he 'is minted and regularly does this', dude had so much money and yet it clearly wasn't enough for him. But yeah, avoid slot machines and games like the plague.

PettyContractor · 06/06/2019 09:50

Why is it tax free

Many years ago I had a spread-betting account. Spread betting allowed you to make exactly the same trades on futures and options you could have made via a broker, but because it was a bet, all proceeds were tax-free.

A book on spread-betting explained the rationale behind it being tax-free. If winnings were table, losses would have to be tax-deductible. And since 95% of all people with spread-betting accounts end up losing money, it didn't make sense to tax it.

HiJenny35 · 06/06/2019 09:51

Pathetic, of course it's gambling, you've already said the money is tax free because it's gambling, why do you think it's offered; just to get people hooked as a gateway to extorting more money. As for you've made £100,000 oh please, no you haven't. How much time have you wasted on this when you could have been doing something decent. Sign up here and here, it's ridiculous, get a proper job and stop funding and allowing these scummy companies to profit.

PettyContractor · 06/06/2019 09:51

If winnings were taxable, not table...

PettyContractor · 06/06/2019 09:56

I agree with this. This is exactly what my father used to say about gambling. (His passport gave "minister of religion" as his occupation, so it was actually his job to moralise!)
