Trump in Ireland

AIBU to think that the only less-than-drone-like behaviour we've seen from Melania was when she met the Irish prime minister? She genuinely looked happy to meet him - has she met him before?

Also, Trump analogising the Irish border with the Mexican border and the Irish prime minister interjecting with 'what we don't want is a wall and a border'. I genuinely smiled at that. Maybe Melania likes him as he's willing to stand up to Trump! Grin

I don't think Trump will be too impressed with the IRish by the time he leaves.

Just thinking back, she probably met him on the last two St. Patrick's days so she probably does know him.

Yeh just watching the news there and Melania almost cracked a smile when she met Leo.

Oria · 05/06/2019 18:32

I'm guessing Melania is happy not to have any more state banquets! Not sure if they've any formal engagements while in Ireland. I think he's just dropping off for a couple of days at his golf course.

We weren't too impressed with him before he even arrived.

Oria · 05/06/2019 18:49

Just watched the press conference there - if ever there was hostile body language it was from the Irish Prime Minister. It was almost 'give him a rope long enough and he'll hang himself'.

There was a question about assassinations in North Korea and Trump enlightens everyone in Ireland 'this is North Korea we're talking about' as if they'd never heard of it. Grin
He's an awful buffoon.

So he hates Ireland's corporation tax - tells everyone he's doing the same and he wants US companies to bid for the NHS.

A successful trip all round!

RompeCabezas · 05/06/2019 18:52

I think he'll get a shock. The last time he came he went under the radar to the west of Ireland and hung out around his golf club (his private territory) and everybody was invested in to being polite to him.

This time he's going to see the protesters before the plane lands.

By the way, slight tangent, but Camilla's wink the other day. Hilarious!

Oria · 05/06/2019 18:53

Btw - Leo Varadkar is so good looking! If he wasn't gay, I'd be happy to try to bag him lol.

OP posts:
RompeCabezas · 05/06/2019 18:54

oooh yeh, that's painful. Leo has a ''let's hope the solpodeine kick in soon'' expression on his face.

Oria · 05/06/2019 18:55

He's in the West of Ireland again! Heading to Normandy tomorrow, then back to Ireland for the night before he trundles off back to whence he came!

OP posts:
Oria · 05/06/2019 18:57

I think it's a way for him to try to win the Irish-American vote again - he can say 'I was just in Ireland - I love the Irish blah blah blah fake news blah'

OP posts:
Oria · 05/06/2019 18:59

Apparently Leo Varadkar is a doctor by profession. Has he ever practised I wonder?

Cherrysoup · 05/06/2019 19:07

He's an awful buffoon. 😂

He’s just SO thick! I cannot understand how those who voted for him can’t see how dense he is, along with being a sexist draft dodging prick.

RompeCabezas · 05/06/2019 19:10

I don't think Trump is stupid, he's just such a narcissist he can push water uphill to sustain his own reality. And even if there are moments where he wavers he knows by now that refusing to acknowledge any other narrative apart from his own means that people / governments / other states do seem to bend around him to accommodate his narcissism.

Not sure if Leo ever practiced.

RuggerHug · 05/06/2019 19:11

Did you see the Gardaí Twitter page asking nearby farmers to please respect the president and not spray silage or anything like that near where he'll be. All it was missing was wink wink, nudge nudge, go on, we've given you the idea now after it.

RompeCabezas · 05/06/2019 19:12

Orla, even if Leo weren't Gay he'd still be extremely right wing!

I don't think he's all that.

I think there's only one good looking politician in the dail, Dominic somebody, he's also gay.

pico1 · 05/06/2019 19:13

LV did practice medicine - he trained as a GP. His partner is also a doctor.

RompeCabezas · 05/06/2019 19:15

Right. God I hope he wipes the floor with Trump.

MissConductUS · 05/06/2019 19:19

Not bloody likely. Grin

He won a very slight majority of Catholic voters in 2016 (likely due to his anti abortion views) but I'm not aware that Irish Americans were particularly deluded swayed.

This Irish American certainly wasn't. And his overall approval rating is stuck in the high 30% range.

Oria · 05/06/2019 19:47

It's what he's aiming for though.

“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.”

This is Trump's mantra.

Leo was bemused by Trumps ramblings, he is embarrassing with the shite that comes out of him.

I reckon the Queen is on the gin after the last few days.

TokyoSushi · 05/06/2019 19:55

I'd be absolutely delighted to meet Leo! 😍

Fandorafannyfarter · 05/06/2019 19:56

Did Trump not meet Varadkar today? I'm not sure who this 'Irish prime minister is'?
I think Leo takes the piss out of lots of people. Lot of Irish do not like him, I do. I personally think he is great craic and is a total kick to the teeth of the racist homophobic yellow headed wanker that arrived with his beautiful wife Melania in Ireland. Not one Irish person wants that buffoon over here yet here he is despite protests.

What was the British Taoiseach views on his visit there can anyone tell me as I didn't catch the news.

ElspethFlashman · 05/06/2019 19:56

His partner is a big fancy pants specialist. Cardiac, I think.

I imagine Melania just fancies Leo. Don't really blame her, he's nearer her age and has a nice voice. Apparently Leo is keeping his head down a bit over the next 3 days. He doesn't want to be too pally.

I heard someone ask him at the press conference "Mr Trump, are you just here to promote your golf course?" and he answered "No I'm here to forge trade links with the UK". Cue sharp withdrawal of breath as everyone wondered if he actually thought he was still in the UK.

He probably does.
