Jamie and James? Same name?

Ok so I know this is nothing to do with me, so don't need you all telling me that. But this couple I know have just had a son a few weeks back, I'll not say his first name but his middle names are Jamie James so.. - first name - Jamie James - second name. Is this only me that's finding this, silly and weird? I thought Jamie and James are the same name. I'm just finding it rather strange.. anyone else find the silly? Hmm

I think Jamie James has a nice ring to it! I know a Jimmy Jamieson and think it sounds good. I also know a Sandy Alexander and a Tommy Thompson. I don't find it that strange or silly to be honest. Maybe in this case they are trying to appease both sets of grandfathers as a pp mentioned.

Ihatehashtags · 05/06/2019 11:09

Very weird!!

Pk37 · 05/06/2019 11:42

It’s ridiculous

Idontwanttotalk · 05/06/2019 12:07

It is a bit silly. It's a bit like a girl's middle names being Julia Julie. You just wouldn't do it.
At least they are his middle names so probably won't use them in most circumstances.

I nearly laughed out loud on a jury when the defendant's name was read out. His middle names were Trevor Francis so clearly his parents liked football. (Yep, I do realise nothing like the scenario in question).

My friend's DH is a David Davies too.

OKBobble · 05/06/2019 12:10

Is his first name Jim? Is his surname Jameson?

Pinkvoid · 05/06/2019 12:14

I know someone who has two DD’s born 18 months apart called Millie and Mollie so she’s literally just changed one letter. Worst still the surname is very similar to both names...

^ very outing but I had to post it, it’s so ridiculous!

Also always think it about Chris Christie.

GeilistheWitch · 05/06/2019 12:23

Jamie is definitely a diminutive of James even if it can now be registered on a birth certificate in its own right.
And we can add Iago and Jacques to the "other variants of James":
Santiago de Compostela is the alleged burial site of the Biblical apostle St. James (Sant Iago) and all the pilgrim routes down through France are called Les Chemins de Saint Jacques.

GeilistheWitch · 05/06/2019 12:25

@Pinkvoid

Better hope they don't have another daughter:

Milly, Molly, Mandy: Millicent, Margaret, Amanda

Many years ago when I was a child there was a boy whose name was John William Willey he was always referred to as John Willy Willy.

The entire name was always used even when calling up the street to come in for tea.

I didn’t think it was weird then- I do now.

Norma27 · 05/06/2019 15:56

I went to uni with someone called James James!
How bizarre they couldn’t think of a different first name to their surname!

JellyNo15 · 05/06/2019 16:02

Really not unheard of in rural Welsh speaking area's. I know of a Thomas Thomas, Edward Edwards and a John John. Weird if you ask me.

HariboLectar · 05/06/2019 16:13

I know a lady whose name (through marriage) has the masculine version of her name as her surname now.

HariboLectar · 05/06/2019 16:15

I did have a teacher at school who was called Taylor Taylor, she said her dad named her so that even when she got married, she'd still have his surname as part of her name Confused

Norma27 · 05/06/2019 17:33

I didn’t know that about rural Wales.

BethanyGilbert · 05/06/2019 17:41

Sue Sue Heck anyone?

geekone · 05/06/2019 18:09

They are not the same. Jamie is the plain scots version of the Gaelic name Hamish (think Harry and Henry as an English equivalent). James is from the bible and is derived from the Hebrew name Jacob.

geekone · 05/06/2019 18:10

Harry and Henry as an equivalent to Jamie and Hamish not Jamie and James.

RiftGibbon · 05/06/2019 18:13

Yes they're the same name. Although a friend of mine once met someone with twin boys - John & Jonathan.

Mouse510 · 05/06/2019 19:16

@geekone Hamish isn’t a Gaelic name. It’s the anglicised version of the Gaelic name Seamus. Seamus is the equivalent of James in English.

Tavannach · 05/06/2019 19:23

Hamish isn’t a Gaelic name. It’s the anglicised version of the Gaelic name Seamus. Seamus is the equivalent of James in English.

Agree.

James - Jim, Jimmy Jamie, Hamish, Jaz (or Jas?) all diminutive names.
Seamus - Gaelic version of James.

apostropheuse · 05/06/2019 19:38

I knew someone who was called Willie Dick, which is obviously the same name. It caused great hilarity in the office (we were young!)

I also know someone whose two sons have the same first and middle name in reverse - think David Thomas and Thomas David, but not actually those two names.

Quintella · 05/06/2019 19:40

Séamus - Irish version of James
Seumas - Scottish Gaelic version of James

Kishmish · 05/06/2019 19:47

My nephew has a friend called Harley David Sam.

I'm still not sure if it was done deliberately...

HollaHolla · 05/06/2019 20:12

I have a friend with kids called Craig & Greg. Sound very similar.
Especially as the dad is Australian. He says Creg & Greg. 🤦🏻‍♀️

HollaHolla · 05/06/2019 20:19

Oh!! I also know a couple called Phillip & Phillippa. Commonly known as Pip & Pip..... really.
