Jamie and James? Same name?

Ok so I know this is nothing to do with me, so don't need you all telling me that. But this couple I know have just had a son a few weeks back, I'll not say his first name but his middle names are Jamie James so.. - first name - Jamie James - second name. Is this only me that's finding this, silly and weird? I thought Jamie and James are the same name. I'm just finding it rather strange.. anyone else find the silly? Hmm

I grew up with a Jimmy James.

Quintella · 04/06/2019 22:32

Hilariously bonkers. There must be a grandad James on one side and a grandad Jamie on the other and they didn't think grandad Jamie would accept just middle name James as honouring both men.

BarryBarryTaylor · 04/06/2019 22:32

My dad used to tell me (so this may not be entirely true) that Gary and Phil Neville’s dad was called Neville, so he was Neville Neville Grin

Jamie is a nn for James but I know more who have shortened it to Jim or Jay.

It’s a mouthful that’s for sure.

Quintella · 04/06/2019 22:34

Yes Neville Neville was his name!

I want to sing it to that 80s tune Voyage Voyage Grin

x2boys · 04/06/2019 22:35

Yep.it's definitely true Barry ,he was local to my parents and used to be chairman(I think of their local football club) Neville Neville was quite a local celebrity.

BarryBarryTaylor · 04/06/2019 22:42

Grin it’s nice to know my old dads tales weren’t a load of crap.
I’m sure he also told me that the BeeGees real surname wasn’t Gibb, it was Tosser...

SparkleGem · 04/06/2019 22:46

@BarryBarryTaylor I'm sure this is totally true about Neville Neville! I think I have read it online before!

I don't see 2 middle names as an issue. I have two "Anna Carly" my children both have two "Ben James and Aaron Lewis." One of them even has a double barrel surname(will change when we finally get married). However I do find it a strange combination whilst they are not the same name they are too similar to put together. I almost called my son Joshua James but felt it needed something to break it up. James was my grandads name and my brothers middle name so wanted to use it. Nhaving two myself made me use two for my children. If I had anymore they would also have two.

Quintella · 04/06/2019 22:55

I don't think it's his having two middle names that's the issue. That's pretty common. It's having the same name twice that's a bit out of the ordinary Grin

SparkleGem · 04/06/2019 23:01

@Quintella yeah thank you quintella Smile

I really want to know why they've done this there is surely be a story behind it.

Pgqio · 04/06/2019 23:08

I know a Ricky Richard Ricardo beat that.

YahBasic · 04/06/2019 23:10

I recently saw a birth announcement on Facebook for Theodore Edward known as Teddy.

DH has referred to him as Steady Teddy Eddy ever since.

highheelsandbobblehats · 04/06/2019 23:13

I have a James that is never, ever a Jamie (but regularly a Jim/Jimmy). However, for this scenario is say that it's absolutely the same name.
James would have been Isabel had he been a girl and I spent months telling my husband that we couldn't have Elizabeth as a middle name because Isabel is the Spanish version of Elizabeth so it would have been the same name twice.

Thurmanmurman · 04/06/2019 23:13

I knew a William Williams. Pissing myself at Doubledave, best nickname ever!

SparkleGem · 04/06/2019 23:15

@notso me too. they just announced the name tonight after a couple of weeks Hmm no explanation or anything.

Have they said why they chose these names? I'm guessing the grandads were James and Jamie?

Even if so, though, it's a relatively recent thing to give children a familiar form of a name on their birth certificate. If they're grandads, they're probably in their 50s at least, so I'd venture that 'Jamie' is actually officially called James.

If the two men are/were close, one of them might have specifically been known as Jamie to differentiate because he and his friend had the same name.

Therefore, by giving the boy the middle name James would have recognised both grandads.

We didn't do the using family names thing ourselves (not criticising those who do), but both of our Mums have/had the same name. If we'd wanted to 'honour' them if we'd had a DD, there's no way we would have called her Jane Mabel Mabel Smith - that would just be ridiculous!

Quintella · 04/06/2019 23:27

Well yeah, but that can't be the case here seeing as they felt the need to go with James and Jamie.

IsabellaLinton · 04/06/2019 23:30

That’s silly - it’s the same name.

My aunt is Suzanna Suzie. It’s ridiculous, but my grandmother thinks it’s adorable - she tells us she loved the name so much she used it twice. But it caused my aunt no end of embarrassment and teasing over the years and she really doesn’t thank her mother for it.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 04/06/2019 23:31

And this is the main reason I didn't take DH's surname, it's a diminutive of my first name, so I'd be James Jamie, or Christine Chrissy for example, it's daft.

ReggaetonLente · 04/06/2019 23:31

My best friend dated a Harry Harrison. I actually thought it was quite a cool name!

KissUntilTheyDieOfRabies · 04/06/2019 23:39

While living in Wales, I discovered Evan Evans, David Davies, forgotten the others but it was really common.

ilovepixie · 04/06/2019 23:46

I like it!

ViserionTheDragon · 04/06/2019 23:47
