I am greatly aware of our rights and understand autonomy but as far as I can see this young Dutch girl, Noa, did not end her own life but was assisted.

My heart goes out to her and her family but this is my absolute reason why euthanasia should not be supported.

I’m actually jealous and wish this was available here. May she finally get some peace

pikapikachu · 04/06/2019 18:08

She said that her pain was unbearable and considering the state of mental health funding I can only imagine how awful it is to live with poor mental health day after day, year after year.

It's not for me to judge. I hope that she rests in peace. XThanks

spanielove · 04/06/2019 18:08

@Grumpbum123 & @pikapikachu 100% agree. Thanks

MonstranceClock · 04/06/2019 18:09

Bless her. At least she isn't tortured anymore.

CanCanCanYouDoThe · 04/06/2019 18:10

YABU. Yes it is terribly sad but to force someone to continue living in what they perceive to be insufferable pain is, in my opinion, inhumane. To me legalised euthanasia is the same as abortion: suicide and abortions will happen regardless of whether or not they are provided by the state, it just enables people who will do it anyway to do it with the minimum amount of suffering.

IMessedUpToday · 04/06/2019 18:10

How terribly sad.Tragic. I can't support this though.

wheresmymojo · 04/06/2019 18:10

I'm the opposite to the PP - as someone who has been suicidal many times and definitely would have taken the option had it been available - I really struggle with euthanasia for MH reasons.

Having got the right treatment I now have a brilliant life and am so glad I didn't kill myself during the 20 or so years of misery prior to that.

I just wish everyone could have access to good MH care.

NoBaggyPants · 04/06/2019 18:11

Any death is sad, but allowing someone with such deep rooted trauma and pain is a kind thing to do.

And to be clear, Noa was very very unwell. It is an exceptional case, not the norm.

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 04/06/2019 18:11

My heart goes out to her and her family but this is my absolute reason why euthanasia should not be supported

Can you expand on this some more?

Grumpbum123 · 04/06/2019 18:11

It’s such a lottery good MH care.

Pgqio · 04/06/2019 18:12

That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. No judgement. Oh my.

adaline · 04/06/2019 18:12

I read somewhere else that it wasn't technically euthanasia - she just stopped eating and drinking and died as a result of that. I don't think she had any medical intervention to end her life as such.

EmeraldShamrock · 04/06/2019 18:13

It is not for me to judge, it is an awful situation, if it wasn't available she may have commit suicide.
Definitely one of the darker sides to euthanasia.
I do believe it in though, I think more countries need to allow it, people have starved themselves to death when they can no longer cope with debilitating illness, they don't have the choice of euthanasia and don't want their family to be prosecuted for manslaughter, yet they have to spend months in agony dying.

motherheroic · 04/06/2019 18:13

When you read her reasoning YABU.

'Netherlands does not have specialised institutions or clinics.'

I suspect this went a LONG way in making her decision. She didn't even have a chance to try and heal.

MadameJosephine · 04/06/2019 18:15

It is extremely sad that this young woman felt she had no other option but I think the pain and distress of suffering with a severe mental health problem cannot be underestimated. RIP Noa Flowers

Littlechocola · 04/06/2019 18:17

Heart breaking but agree with @CanCanCanYouDoThe

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 04/06/2019 18:18

I agree with cancancan, who words it better than I could. This is terribly sad but death as a managed decision with dignity seems better to me than a shock suicide.

PowerBadgersUnite · 04/06/2019 18:18

I'm a bit confused. It says in the metro article above that she stopped eating and drinking so how was this euthanasia? Surely it was just allowing her to take her own life. Or am I missing the actual assisted bit?

Pencilcase123 · 04/06/2019 18:18

This is horrific. 17 year olds should not be euthanised for MH reasons. She should have been given proper MH care.

jaseyraex · 04/06/2019 18:18

Could you elaborate on why you think it shouldn't be supported, OP? Just curious.

I think it's clear that Noa's case is a lot more complicated than most. Certainly not the norm. To live in a place where there are no specialist clinics must be horrendously hard, especially when mental health services appear to be luck of the draw no matter where you are in the world. Poor girl. At least she is finally at peace, I can't imagine it would have been an impulsive decision to do this.
