Is this a bit excessive?

This is petty and lighthearted before anyone wades in.

DH thinks IABU but when DS and I are here alone all week we probably use 4 pints of milk in the weekdays (1 big container).

DS is away and DH is here with his 2 teenage DC.

DH and I have 1 cup of coffee in the morning, thats it. His DC have unlimited cups of tea and we are getting through 4 pints of milk a day. IMHO this is excessive and a bit ridiculous.

Am 1?

I should add I am outraged as have gone to make my Sunday morning cuppa and there is no milk Angry

That’s a colossal amount of milk. Do they just use it for cups of tea?

Sexnotgender · 02/06/2019 10:38

Amount of milk isn’t an issue. Selfishly using the last and not replacing it is the issue.

ATowelAndAPotato · 02/06/2019 10:39

When my DBro was a teenager, he used to drink a whole pint of milk in one go, straight from the bottle in the fridge... just saying!

Medievalist · 02/06/2019 10:40

My dcs are late teens/early 20s. One of them would normally get through a 4 pint carton a day; another probably 2-4 pints; and another probably only half a pint. I have no problem with this.

HolesinTheSoles · 02/06/2019 10:40

I don't use a lot of milk as I only have it in tea, when we have guests who eat cereal or drink milk as a drink we can get through pints quite quickly. The only issue I'd have is with people who finish off the milk and don't go and buy more.

HolesinTheSoles · 02/06/2019 10:41

I think unless you're absolutely destitute you'd be very miserly to limit how many cups of tea people in your household drink!

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 10:42

So you and ds use 4 pints on a weekend (2 people, 2 days). You, dh, 2 dc (4 people) use 4 pints on 1 day, which is equivalent to 4 pints for 2 days for 2 people. Unless I'm missing something, it's the exact same amount of milk.

On an aside, we go through 12 litres of milk a week when ds16 is here. He was away for 6 weeks and we bought 1 litre in that whole time, and that was only because ds21 was home for a weekend.

Iamnotagoddess · 02/06/2019 10:43

Me and DS use 4 pints over 5 days.

I recommend having a few cartons of UHT milk in a cupboard for just this purpose! I have found that my teen DS now always remembers to put a UHT carton in the fridge when the fresh is almost finished, after having to have room temp milk on his cereal GrinGrin

NC4Now · 02/06/2019 10:44

I can only think that their brews must be rank if they’re putting that much milk in.

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 10:45

Aaagh. Ignore me. You said weekdays for you and ds, not weekend. So it's 4 pints for 5 days for 2 people, vs 4 pints for 4 people for 1 day. So that's 2.5 times the quantity of milk when your dsc are there.

My ds16 would still drink more Grin

Oysterbabe · 02/06/2019 10:45

They are unreasonable for not replacing something they used up but you can't police how much milk they use.

Iamnotagoddess · 02/06/2019 10:46

@Isthisafreename

Your Maths skills have blown my mind Grin

Are you there all day every day? Or do you go out to work and school?

Iamnotagoddess · 02/06/2019 10:48

Yes UHT is a fab idea!!

Yes it’s half water half milk and about 300 sugars Envy not envy.

OP posts:
hsegfiugseskufh · 02/06/2019 10:49

I wouldn't care how much they used (ds dss and dp go through a fair amount on cereal alone!) But i would be unimpressed that nobody replaced it and i would be insistant that somebody did!

unicorncupcake · 02/06/2019 10:49

But if you’re out and about during the day in the week that surely accounts for the fact that you’re not using as much milk? We get through much more at weekends simply because we’re at home throughout the day. The problem is people being selfish and finishing it off without letting you know/popping to the shops to pick up some more.

CaptainCabinets · 02/06/2019 10:50

Says it all really that you keep referring to them as ‘his DC’ and not ‘my stepkids’ Smile

BlueCornishPixie · 02/06/2019 10:50

Do they have cereal?

I dont think its exvessive for 2 teenagers plus 2 adults. Its about twice what you drink but if they have cereal and you donr, they have a glass and you dont. I could easily drink a pint in a day tbh.

It would annoy me finishing it and not buying more/letting you know. Youll just have to have a back up bottle in the fridge for when they come.

Eustasiavye · 02/06/2019 10:52

I'm with other posters on this. No problem with how much milk they drink but using the last bit is unaccptable.
Ds has only once drank all the milk leaving myself and dh milkless for our morning cuppa, he has never repeated his error.

WindsweptEgret · 02/06/2019 10:52

I'd just buy 4 pints of cheap milk for them and have your own separate bottle that they can't touch. Milk isn't very expensive but they shouldn't be leaving none for you.

Banhaha · 02/06/2019 10:54

It does seem a lot but then good for them to get their calcium etc. The UHT emergency back up is a good idea I think I'll start doing that. Could you afford to get extra in when you know they are coming?

pikapikachu · 02/06/2019 10:55

I live with 3 teens and this sounds reasonable to me. (The sugar doesn't) They know that I need a bit with my morning coffee so wouldn't leave me without any left but I am happy that they drink milk.

WindsweptEgret · 02/06/2019 10:56

What difference does it make if it is a weekday or weekend? Maybe you would get free milk for tea and coffee at work (If you use it, I drink my coffee black) but my DS can't even buy unflavoured milk at school so it makes no difference to how much he drinks at home.
