For you to tell me your worst holiday stories?

Sat here feeling sorry for myself 5 days into a two week all inclusive to Mexico. My partner has slipped this morning on a wet floor due to heavy rainfall and has fractured his shoulder and is now in agony in a sling. We spent the morning in A&E, hotel manager very disingenuous and unsympathetic and now facing 9 days of probably quite an unenjoyable break. Am I being unreasonable to ask you to tell me your worst holiday stories to help cheer me up?!

Hope your partner recovers quickly Thanks I got a horrendous case of food poisoning on my first night in LA, at the beginning of a 3 week trip round America. Had to be hospitalised at one point and I didn't eat anything except plain bread the rest of the trip despite booking so many amazing restaurants.... sigh

DameSquashalot · 02/06/2019 00:42

Sorry to hear about the mishap.

Food poisoning here too. The both end simultaneously type. Lasted about 3/4 weeks after we got home.

TMI, but I have never been so happy to do a solid poo. (Sorry!)

Twofurrycatsagain · 02/06/2019 00:44

Not quite as drastic as yours!
Lesvos quite a few years ago. Had booked way in advance as couldn't get anything there the year before and was really looking forward to it.
Booked self catering studio. Carefully picked somewhere that only had studios to hopefully limit the number of children (was a teacher so summer holidays). Except the brochure failed to mention the new apartment block with rooms that slept 4/5. Or that the neighbouring apartments could use our pool.....
The beach was about 150m away..... in a straight line . But you'd to walk on a narrow zig zag road and risk getting whacked by a wing mirror every now and again
It was the year the euro came in and apparently a lot of mainland Greeks who usually came hadn't so everywhere was a bit flat and depressed.
And I got bitten by every insect going and had an allergic reaction. No pharmacy in the resort.
The saving grace was booking a car and going out every day. Starting at a pharmacy. It's one of the few holidays I wanted to go home early!

GreenTulips · 02/06/2019 00:46

Friend had a appendicitis’s and was lucky to be alive, DSis caught German measles.
DH nearly broke his ankle on a collapsing chair.

We’re used to issues on holidays!

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 02/06/2019 00:51

Ah OP that sucks. Where are you staying? We love Mexico, just got back couple days ago from our latest visit.

I know it's painful for your DP but is he still okay to eat and lie on a sunlounger?

Mother87 · 02/06/2019 00:54

Went to an amazing safari camp in Kruger National Park - months of planning - all beautiful... I took anti-malarial drugs as advised... Was SOOO ill for the 3 day duration of our stay - was practically DELIRIOUS - thought I would NEVER feel well again (tbf it took several weeks after arriving back in the UK before I was back to 'normal) And my abiding memory - overhearing 'D'H on the phone ordering his lavish dinner/wine choice before he disappeared for 3 hours to enjoy his eveningGrin

PawPawNoodle · 02/06/2019 01:00

@Twofurrycatsagain where in Lesvos did you go? I've been many times and loved it, although funnily enough my worst experience was in Lesvos!

I got horrendous bacterial labyrinthitis from messing about in the pool and spent a week on post-surgical antibiotics in an effort to clear it before my flight home. I slept for about 2 days straight before venturing out to explore, and had vertigo so spent the whole time feeling dizzy and my ears popping as we drove around the mountains. Didnt let it ruin the holiday too much though, I saw some cool stuff!

Saavhi · 02/06/2019 01:02

Over the course of three days during a cabin holiday in North Yorkshire:

  • food poisoning
  • flat tyre
  • black eye (from jumping over a stream and face planting on a rock)
  • car breakdown due to filling up with diesel not petrol (happened at motroway service station luckily)
  • family blow up in York on the way home
  • forgot a few items in the cabin and never got them back

Still had a good time, everyone was in good spirits until the drive back down.

pintsizedblondie · 02/06/2019 01:09

He can eat one handed, I might have to cut some stuff up for him. Hopefully he will be OK to go on the sunloungers today. We've spent today in our room and I'm not sure I can spend another 9 doing that!!

I was 18, boyfriend was 20, went to an island just off Venezuela, I think we took factor 20 suncream.

Turns out in the hottest month they have ever had with the basic minimum with 2 stupid people not applying it regularlly you get really bad sunburn, my boyfriend at the time was out for a good week, it took me 2 days and I think we got off lightly

anitagreen · 02/06/2019 01:20

Not as exotic as other people's holidays but we went to Butlins late 90s and a bug was going about with food poisoning there was just piles of vomit everywhere, most toilets covered in diorreah cannot spell that sorry! But it was grim then to top it off two days later we all came down with it so was just wiped out,
I've been back numerous times though and they have a Zero policy on being unwell on resort and now stomach bugs lol

MadisonAvenue · 02/06/2019 01:20

We went to Lanzarote in the early 90s and arrived late at night after a long day of traveling and delays. We didn't bother unpacking anything apart from our passports and money which we put in the room safe. We were so tired that we locked the door, turned the lights out and fell asleep on the bed still fully clothed.

When we woke the next morning the apartment door, which was just a flimsy patio door, had been forced open (as had the neighbouring ones) and our bags were gone, the thief had come into the bedroom while we were sleeping and taken them.

It was a horrible start to the holiday and we spent the first day in a really grim police station, waiting with dozens of other holiday makers, so that we could report the crime and get a number for our insurance. We also had to sort out replacement prescription meds and get some new clothes.

A few years ago my DH and I went on holiday to Turkey, near the Syrian border, and just so happened to time it with the locals deciding to oust the Kurds from their town. There was a "national pride" parade, followed by a riot, then they set a bunch of buildings on fire and started dragging Kurds out into the street to beat them around the heads with pipes. We made it back to our hotel just in time to avoid the tear gassing of the city centre.

I'm not sure why but they wouldn't evacuate us until the next day. Probably because no one wanted to go to the town we were in whisky the riot was going. We spent an awful night in the hotel absolutely petrified that the building was about to be burned down. I still remember the sounds of them all chanting and people screaming, it was horrible.

The scariest thing about it all was the lack of media coverage. I contacted my family thinking they would be worried about me but they hadn't heard a thing. All they could find was videos of burning buildings on twitter. There was no media coverage of it at all.

DameSquashalot · 02/06/2019 06:53

PregnantSea that sounds horrendous!

Witchesandwizards · 02/06/2019 07:08

Not mine but my parents.
Two days into a luxury holiday in Bali, DM slipped in a shop, broke her hip and ended up having surgery in a local hospital. Fortunately, since the bombing, an amazing Aussie hospital opened.
However, she left DF alone at the hotel and he has Parkinson’s which wasn’t ideal. They were both looked after amazingly well by the hotel, including regular flowers and food parcels for DM.
I was at home worried out of my mind and 8 months pregnant so I couldn’t go and help which I would have tried to do if I could,
I couldn’t even help much when they got back because of said newborn and the fact they are a couple of hours away on the train.

AuntieMarys · 02/06/2019 07:15

Back in my 20s I went on holiday with a girlfriend to Lanzarote. She copped off...I spent one evening with a group of "nice" married couples in a hotel bar. One of the wives suggested her dh walk me back to my apartment "as it wasn't safe".
He tried to rape me.
Luckily I hit him in the nose, broke it and got the police. He was deported .

Yogagirl123 · 02/06/2019 07:27

So sorry to hear of your partners accident, I hope it doesn’t spoil your holiday too much.

Our worse holiday was in Ibiza in 1989, first holiday abroad, with my boyfriend, who is now DH, we had a rat living in the mattress of our bed! I’m not kidding, holiday company moved us to a much nicer hotel, it was in the newspaper back in the day, DH was teased rotten about it at work!

ShopoholicIn · 02/06/2019 08:06

Oh op I hope he feels better soon and you enjoy some of your stay in Mexico. Flowers

We went to Spain and DC got chicken pox the next day. So we had a sea facing room n near the hotel swimming pool but were staying in doors all day for the rest of the 1.5 weeks of our holiday. Had to extend our stay as well as he was still getting new crops hence we couldn't fly back.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 02/06/2019 08:18

Food poisoning in Mexico, then found out I was pregnant too. Airport tiny, no seats, so I lay on the floor (had not eaten for 3/4 days). Flight delayed by 6 hours.

I cried. Lovely airport staff found me a room in nearby hotel to sleep, and gave me a wake-up call an hour before departure.

So kind.

It did not put me off Mexico, always found people so kind and helpful.

Sounds like you've got bad luck with that manager, maybe he is worried about being sued and admitting liability...

Hope you have good insurance?

AuntieDolly · 02/06/2019 08:21

Can't you use your travel insurance to come home early?

Alsonification · 02/06/2019 08:37

Honeymoon in Corfu back in 2000. We arrived on a Saturday. Apartments weren’t that nice but we were happy to make do. We met some other people & had a great few days with them until the Monday. We all hired scooters. I was on the back of our one. We hit gravel, both of us went flying. I landed on the edge of a cliff beside a rusted spike that was sticking out of the ground! The others we met stopped obviously & were trying to help us. A guy driving a tractor stopped & threw us on the trailer at the back & drove us to a hospital. Our new friends brought our scooter back to the hire place. We stayed in hospital for one night. It was horrible. No one spoke a word of English. Both of us had stitches, me in my knee & him in his head & knee. I had to have a brace on my leg so I couldn’t bend it & burst the stitches. A nurse kept bringing me a bed pan which I just couldn’t use so at 3am I struggled out of bed to the loo which was very difficult.
The next day we got back to the apartment to find our friends had swapped our upstairs room for their downstairs room as they knew we couldn’t manage the stairs & there was no lift. They packed all our stuff & moved it for us which was very good of them. They really looked after us for the rest of the week I have to say. We went home the following Saturday on wheelchairs in the airport. Our flight was delayed for hours. I couldn’t wait to get home to our 2yr old.
Needless to say we are divorced now Grin

Paddy1234 · 02/06/2019 08:40

😱 at all the horror stories

aposterhasnoname · 02/06/2019 08:45

The Dom Rep. First up, flight delay because they couldn’t open the doors to the hold, to get the previous passengers luggage out. Nine hours later they got permission to fly with the luggage still in the hold. We boarded, then the pilot announced that the doors had opened, so now they had to unload the luggage, another hour delay sat on the plane.

Arrived to find it pouring with rain, which didn’t stop for a week. Then the big Haiti earthquake hit. Most of the staff had family affected, and went to help (understandably). After the quake the weather improved, but no one was in much of a holiday mood after seeing the awful images of what was going on.

On the way home, as we boarded, a baby was screaming, and sounded really distressed. Long story short, we ended up turning back from the end of the runway to get the baby checked by a doctor. One guy got really angry at the delay and ended up fighting with the babies father, so we had to wait for the police to remove them.

Was never so pleased to get home.

ControversialFerret · 02/06/2019 08:48

The year we went to Morocco. Managed to get a great last minute deal on a 5* all inclusive hotel. We normally always do self catering so this was a real treat.

Flight out delayed by 6 hours. Presented with a poorly translated waiver form at 2am at the hotel; no room keys or luggage (off-loaded from coach into hotel 'storage room') would be forthcoming without the signed waiver (which said you promise not to sue us for just about anything).

Day two DH started throwing up and was too poorly to leave the room. By day three I had it and we were fighting over access to the loo. On day four we tried leaving the hotel to find a pharmacy - got about 200yds down the road before turning round. By day seven we were well enough to make it out to the sunloungers and spend a bit of time outside, before getting back on the coach to go to the airport.

Funkyslippers · 02/06/2019 08:49

Sorry to hear that OP.

Ibiza about 25 years ago with best friend at the time. I had a boyfriend back home, she didn't. She copped off with a different bloke most nights while I sat there like a lemon. One night we went clubbing to the other side of the island, she met someone, said she was going outside to get some fresh air. 20 mins later club was closing. Me & her new 'friend's' friend went looking for them, couldn't find them so went to their apartment, still no sign of them. He was kind enough to come with me in the taxi back to our apartment. I went to bed, was woken several hours later by friend blaming me for leaving her! Got food poisoning too. Felt really trapped there for 2 weeks and just wanted to come home.
