Taking scales on holiday?

traineepro · 01/06/2019 07:17

I know this is a bit batshit but I'm thinking of taking a set of scales on holiday with me as I put on weight stupidly easily and there aren't any in apartment we're staying in. Will that cause any problems with airport security do you think?

OP posts:
Motherof3feminists · 01/06/2019 18:40

I used to do this. I had an eating disorder. Get help and stop attention seeking.

lljkk · 01/06/2019 18:44

I thought maybe the OP meant food scales. like weigh all her food portions.

Smaller & more effective than bringing scales to weigh one's body.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 01/06/2019 20:33

Motherof3feminists your post is highly offensive.
OP I have AN and not gone on holiday as I couldn’t cope without scales amongst other reasons. My concern would be that by the time the scales had been chucked around by baggage handlers they would be so inaccurate that they would be worthless. Add on the fact that long haul flights cause fluid retention and I worry that what you took to give you peace of mind would in fact cause you more stress.

BlueJava · 01/06/2019 22:37

Just take them - scales in the hold with batteries in hand luggage. Or see if your hotel has scales in the gym.

Damntheman · 01/06/2019 22:47

Check your airline policies if the scales take lithium batteries OP. They can be a problem.

Gth1234 · 02/06/2019 00:21

@traineepro

you can't easily put on 3-4lbs a day unless you have previously spent a couple of days not drinking water.

They will have scales somewhere near your accommodation, but just be careful what you eat and drink

namechangedforanon · 02/06/2019 01:08

Nope not weird . I nearly took mine but my hotel had some .

I'm going fast 800 so weigh daily

Gwenhwyfar · 02/06/2019 11:38

I think it's fine to weigh yourself every day if that's what works for you. Weighing once a week has its own problems.
However, I agree with those who say that taking a scale with you is quite obsessive. What about the added weight to your suitcase?

In some countries you can weigh yourself in some pharmacies or gyms just like here. Can you try to google to see if there'll be a scale near where you're going you can use a few times during the holiday?

Gwenhwyfar · 02/06/2019 11:41

"I lost weight and kept it off all through my 30s and 40s by throwing away the scales. Life changing. I just go with how my clothes fit.

Agree with this. "

I disagree. Going by how your clothes fit means you can put on quite a lot of weight before realising you've put on weight. People also buy new clothes so can easily not even realise they don't fit into certain things any more.
In any case, it's up to OP how she loses/maintains her weight.
(That's not to say I agree with taking the scaled on holiday!)

VimFuego101 · 02/06/2019 11:45

This doesn't sound healthy. Your weight will fluctuate from time to time due to eating salty foods/ water retention or having treats on holiday. You shouldn't feel the need to weigh yourself daily, just get back on the wagon when you get home.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2019 11:49

4 pounds a day is 14000 calories! Or 2 stone in a week. That’s a huge amount of calories to be overeating, even as alcoholic drinks etc. I’d leave the scales at home and maybe be s but more mindful of what you eat and drink.

HoppityChicken · 02/06/2019 12:00

Gwenhwyfar - I admit I live in jeans most of the time, they're a pretty good measure of how much macaroni cheese has made it into my tummy. But some other clothes not so great as a guide.

cccameron · 02/06/2019 12:07

It's absolutely batshit that anyone would contemplate taking scales on holiday. Just ridiculous.

@Hollyhobbi Can I just ask what blood calcium levels have to do with weight. Mine is low so interested if there's a link

mrswilson2 · 02/06/2019 12:09

I bought some once when away for 3 weeks, found a cheap set in Aldi for €15 , aware its over the top but I would have been panicking otherwise Confused

dramaqueen · 02/06/2019 12:10

I’m a daily weighter too and don’t think this is odd, and I certainly don’t have a fucked up relationship with food. It keeps me focussed and as someone has said, its easier to lose a pound or two than a stone.

I’m going to invest in some mini scales and take them on my next holiday.

Ignore the naysayers, OP. Do what you need to keep your weight where you want it.

Meangirls36 · 02/06/2019 12:13

You have an eating disorder see a dr

cccameron · 02/06/2019 15:18

It's so incredibly sad that someone would take scales on holiday with them. To have that level of an obsession with food must be awful.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/06/2019 15:25

"Gwenhwyfar - I admit I live in jeans most of the time, they're a pretty good measure of how much macaroni cheese has made it into my tummy. But some other clothes not so great as a guide."

I don't think jeans are perfect either. They're much smaller straight from the wash, for example so people can use that as a denial mechanism. Some are quite stretchy as well.
Also, as I mentioned, people buy new clothes. They might have the same size on the label, but actually be bigger. Weight really can creep up on people if they don't weight themselves.

SmarmyMrMime · 02/06/2019 15:29

Don't take them. They could be damaged easily anyway.

Holiday gains can be affected by cabin pressure on the flight, change of bowel habits from different food, water retention from drinking habits. Most of this resets within a week or two.

Enjoy the holiday. Don't go mad on the food and drink, but don't deprive yourself either.

If it's AI type buffets, I load much of the plate with salad first and go for the more unusual foods rather than common stuff like chips that I can eat easily at home. Drink plenty of water between soft drinks and alcohol. It's not depriving yourself, just making sure you're not going too mad on empty calories to lose later.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2019 15:32

Will a cheap set of second scales actually weigh the sane as the OO’s “home” scales, especially after being on a plane? Scales are very sensitive.

Missingstreetlife · 02/06/2019 15:54

Can't you tell from how your clothes fit and your face looks like? Drink lots of water

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/06/2019 16:05

Take a tape measure instead. If you measure around he same part of your upper thigh, you should be able to detect whether it's expanding. Or if you're not planning to wear revealing swimwear, tie a piece of string snugly around your waist.

agirlhasnonameX · 02/06/2019 16:13

You don't lose or gain weight over the space of days or even a week.

If your scales go up one day to the next it's not fat gain/loss, it's water (carbs), not your true weight.

You can stay the same weight on a set of scales but drop inches and dress sizes. Scales aren't a very accurate way to measure weight (fat) loss or gain and weighing or measuring every day is very unhealthy for your mentality and completely pointless. Once a week is sufficient and even that is quite a lot.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/06/2019 16:48

I’m coming back again as this thread is playing on my mind. Do you have kids OP? I really worry that a child seeing mum take scales on holiday and have to weigh each day, is receiving a really message that this is normal and weight is of paramount importance. As hard as it will be, you need to leave those scales behind.

LovelyJubblee · 02/06/2019 17:29

Just go and enjoy the holiday. I put on 8lbs at Easter on all inclusive and within two weeks of getting home it was all gone
