Taking scales on holiday?

traineepro · 01/06/2019 07:17

I know this is a bit batshit but I'm thinking of taking a set of scales on holiday with me as I put on weight stupidly easily and there aren't any in apartment we're staying in. Will that cause any problems with airport security do you think?

It's a bit of a waste of your precious luggage allowance.

Just watch what you eat - have loads of salads and not much dressing. Not too many ice creams and alcohol.
Be active.

Enjoy!!!

Oldraver · 01/06/2019 13:48

Personally I think this is silly behaviour. How can you relax weighing yourself daily.

Plus thye would take up quite a bit of baggage allowance if you have the standard 18/22kg

Bluetrews25 · 01/06/2019 13:49

Please get some help, you are exhibiting very eating disorder related behaviour.

Robin2323 · 01/06/2019 13:51

I lost weight and kept it off all through my 30s and 40s by throwing away the scales. Life changing. I just go with how my clothes fit.

Agree with this.
You cannot let the scales dictate how you feel?

You are good enough as you are !!!

If you're still reading:
Get outside for fresh air and exercise.
A 20 minute walk a day.
Drink plenty of water - I like it warm ( boiled)

Try to eat 3 healthy and nutritious meals a day and make sure you are eating enough calories.
Too few and your metabolism will slow down.

Avoid bread, Oates and other foods that may cause bloating.

And enjoy your holiday x

tenbob · 01/06/2019 13:52

No one can put on 3-4lbs a day of fat. Water, maybe, but not fat

You have to overeat around 3500 calories to put in 1lb of fat

There is no way on earth you can consume 10,000 calories a day, every day you’re away

If having scales stops you over eating, why not just have the same discipline without the weigh ins?

historyrocks · 01/06/2019 13:55

I sometimes take scales away with me. I bought a tiny/travel scales. I put weight on very easily due to medication I take so I'm particularly vigilant.

OneHanded · 01/06/2019 13:55

I did it as well as about twenty cans of Pepsi max a few years ago. No problems whatsoever! I was going to remote Scotland though and also had jumpers and hiking gear galore in there so...

OneHanded · 01/06/2019 13:57

.. I also have anorexia however and was in a very bad place so can’t help but agree you really shouldn’t take them - it’s disorder behaviour.

Hollyhobbi · 01/06/2019 14:01

Have you had your hormones levels checked? Specifically thyroid hormones and also your blood calcium levels?

Lovemusic33 · 01/06/2019 14:02

Leave them at home and enjoy your holiday. You can lose the weight when you get back. I usually find I’m pretty careful and pick healthier options anyway so never gain much.

Serialweightwatcher · 01/06/2019 14:03

If you're going somewhere hot you may put a few pounds on in fluid - usually on holidays you'd do more walking than usual ... don't take them it's silly

KneelJustKneel · 01/06/2019 14:03

Avoid oats?? Why? I love porridge.

janetforpresident · 01/06/2019 14:06

Op you really can't put that much on in a day and you really can lose weight without fasting. Consider the scientific reasonability of what you have said. Surely you can see it's nonsense.

Please listen to us, if you overeat and put on weight then fast to lose you are already in an unhealthy cycle. Just eat healthily stop eating when you are full and get some exercise.

MatildaTheCat · 01/06/2019 14:10

I’m a daily weigher , I don’t consider it odd at all. After I lost quite a bit of weight I read that if you weighed daily you were, statistically far less likely to regain the weight ( only a small percentage of people keep the weight off long term after losing). That made sense to me and it’s worked pretty well. It’s far easier to shift a pound or two than a stone or two.

However, no don’t take them on holiday. As others say there are loads of variables when you go away and just eating and drinking mindfully and relaxing for a week or two is good for you. I’m frequently surprised by my lack of gain after holidays but it’s probably because I don’t snack.

Enjoy and have a great trip.

ChristmasFluff · 01/06/2019 14:14

How about saving the weight/space of the scales in your suitcase, and just tie a thin piece of string snugly around your waist?

There's some evidence that this stops people overeating too (as the string tightens if you eat loads). If you feel it getting tight during the holiday, look at what you are eating then.

Not everyone does want to go completely off-track on their hols, so I can see why you want to monitor your weight, but taking scales is going a bit beyond. String a bit less so.

EleanorOalike · 01/06/2019 14:15

I’ve not got an eating disorder but I do have complex health problems which mean I gain weight extremely easily and for the sake of my health I simply cannot gain even a small amount of weight without it seriously impacting my health. I know many people who go on holiday to Florida and gain a stone or more in two weeks. I know the attitude is that it will drop off when you come back and get back into normal eating but because of my hormone levels that wouldn’t happen for me and I’d be looking at months of problems ahead. So yes, I do weigh myself on holiday and continue to go to the gym whilst I’m away. I still enjoy meals and have an ice cream or whatever but I can’t afford to take the attitude that I’m on holiday so I can pig out and eat whatever.

I don’t take scales OP. I usually buy some cheap ones whilst I’m out there or go and get weighed on the scales in a pharmacy or if the gym where I’m staying has a set of scales. All scales fluctuate so I weigh myself as close as I can to when I get there and weigh in every 3 days or so and monitor what’s going on it terms of if my weight is going steadily up or down or staying the same. I find it really helpful. On my last holiday I only gained 2lbs. I think it easily could have been 7lbs if I hadn’t monitored things and that would have taken me months to come off and have a significant impact on me healthwise.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 01/06/2019 14:20

Avoid oats 😂

starsparkle08 · 01/06/2019 14:25

Think people are being pretty harsh in replies .

Yes people like to relax on holiday but OP is saying to relax having the scales would help .
Lots of people who are health conscious are keen to keep an eye on their weight including when on holiday .

I’ve been very nearly morbidly obese with a bmi of nearly 39 . I’ve had weight loss surgery and now weigh 8stone and have a normal bmi . I like to have access to scales as it helps me stay on track.

I would probably try to avoid taking scales on a plane as like others have mentioned they are likely to get broken .
Perhaps look to see if any gyms near the hotel that you could go to weigh yourself .
Failing that maybe reduce your anxiety by tracking your food intake on my fitness pal or something similar , I find this helps me

EleanorOalike · 01/06/2019 14:36

Or you could take a measuring tape!

EdWinchester · 01/06/2019 14:37

I’d just buy some there.

I can understand this as I weigh myself every day and would feel discombobulated if I didn’t.

Branleuse · 01/06/2019 14:50

everyone can put on 3lb in a day. Thats what we eat and drink. Its not weight gain. Leave your scales at home.

By the way, I also seriously contemplated this when I was full on eating disorder. Weighing yourself can be very addictive.

Youre better off just being careful what you eat and drink and sticking to your normal healthy diet

DonkeyHohtay · 01/06/2019 15:17

Op you need to seek help. This is one of the most fucked up things I’ve read on here, and that’s saying something

Completely agree. Right at the top of the "batshit-crazy meter".

goodwinter · 01/06/2019 16:50

Think people are being pretty harsh in replies .

I don't think the replies are harsh at all. I think they're coming from a place of concern.

I know that daily weighing can be part of accountability in a healthy weight-loss (or maintenance) lifestyle, but I don't think that extends to taking scales on holiday with you. Part of achieving a healthy lifestyle and a good balance is knowing when to step back a little and give yourself a bit of breathing room.

To be so worried about gaining weight over the space of a week that you'd need to take your bathroom scales with you is, to me, a massive red flag.

Robin2323 · 01/06/2019 16:52

If I eat Oates I get bloated.
Everyone's different.
If it helps one person thats ok :)

Kedgeree · 01/06/2019 16:58

My friend takes her scales with her whenever she's away even if only for one night. She weighs herself everyday. She's very thin. If you want to use up your baggage allowance that way, go for it, but put them in the hold bag not hand luggage.
