Taking scales on holiday?

I know this is a bit batshit but I'm thinking of taking a set of scales on holiday with me as I put on weight stupidly easily and there aren't any in apartment we're staying in. Will that cause any problems with airport security do you think?

You are not putting on 3 or 4 lb in a day it is just not possible unless you are eating 10 pizzas a day.
I weighed myself this morning and can guarantee that I will weigh anything up to 3lb heavier by bedtime. This is food I have eaten, bloat from salty food, perhaps not drinking enough water, period due etc.
Weighing daily can be helpful if the person doing so understands the points made above and by many previous posters. It can help you see that fluctuations are normal and that everything will even out in a day or two. I do it myself as I am currently trying to lose 4 stone. I found weighing weekly was not as motivating for me as if I happened to weigh on a day where I was a bit bloated or constipated it it looked like i either hadn't lost anything or even gained. This only works if you are approaching eating and losing weight with a healthy attitude which it does not sound like you are.
A week ago I weighed 11 stone 4, the following day I was 11 stone 7 then my period came and over the week that has slowly come down and and today I am 11 stone 3.
I would advise going and enjoying your holiday indulge a little but not too much and be as active as you can so a swim every morning, an evening walk etc.

Really, don't take the scales on holiday. (And ideally don't weigh yourself every day, full stop.)

If you really must take something, take a tape measure. It's not 'weight', it's size that you're interested in, after all.

CoffeeMilkNoSugar · 01/06/2019 11:15

YANBU. Sticking to a healthy weight is very important and if daily weighing helps you achieve this, take the scales. :) As long as you stay within your healthy weight range and eat the calories you need, don't let anyone tell you you're being obsessive. Better to keep an eye on your weight if, like me, you put weight on easily, than to balloon up to infinifat sizes.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 01/06/2019 11:33

Taking your scales on holiday? That is BEYOND fucked up.

Iggly · 01/06/2019 11:35

Weighing yourself daily is nuts and just winds you up. You also make up nonsense like the idea of putting on pounds in one day.

Better to measure your waist, hips etc and measure losses that way.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 01/06/2019 11:44

I think you have issues and no you shouldn't take your scales with you. Why don't you use the holiday to tune into the way your body feels? You don't need an external measure like scales to know whether you're getting fatter or thinner. Presumably you wear clothes every day? You'll notice the difference in fit, and just in how you feel as well.

Drogosnextwife · 01/06/2019 11:48

Why would the scales stop you putting on weight?

Hecateh · 01/06/2019 13:14

If you really want to get weighed on holiday then just pop into a chemist/pharmacy.

BUT

as others have said You Cannot Put 3 to 4 lbs of fat on in a day.

If you change your diet you are likely to retain water which can show on the scales within a day but will disappear just as quickly once you get home.

Flying causes me to gain up to 7lb in water - which often doesn't go whilst on holiday because I am eating different things. I can come home from holiday weighing up to 10lbs heavier, all but 2 or 3 disappear within days. The 2 or 3 are down to richer foods, the odd ice cream, more alcohol and might take a week or so more to shift.

Taking your scales away is batshit crazy

breakfastpizza · 01/06/2019 13:16

I've taken them before. No issues at all.

chuttypicks · 01/06/2019 13:18

If you don't already have one, then constantly weighing yourself is likely to lead to an eating disorder. Taking scales on holiday is, quite frankly, batshit.

ThatCurlyGirl · 01/06/2019 13:20

"I can easily put on 3 or 4 pounds in a day unfortunately, even when I'm being careful

I really don't think this is possible!

If you absolutely have to can't you buy scales when you get there? Much easier.

That said, as a former anorexic I understand how how you feel but I also know it's very unhealthy to be so focused on food and to weigh yourself every day.

HoppityChicken · 01/06/2019 13:23

I lost weight and kept it off all through my 30s and 40s by throwing away the scales. Life changing. I just go with how my clothes fit.

blue25 · 01/06/2019 13:23

It is not healthy to weigh yourself every day. It's obsessive and damaging behaviour. Chill out and enjoy your holiday.

Housemartins50 · 01/06/2019 13:25

If you’re taking them as hand luggage remove when going through security. We didn’t and got stopped for searching. We always take them.

Sosayi · 01/06/2019 13:31

I’m the same OP I can easily put on weight on holiday
Look on Amazon. Put in mini digital scales you can get ones for £10-£15 that are smaller than an iPad mini and really light
They take a bit of getting used to in order to stand on properly as they are really small but they are very accurate and they beep when you get the correct weight
I have one and they go everywhere with me 😂
Never had a problem taking them anywhere with me and I’ve been to loads of places

goodwinter · 01/06/2019 13:33

Sorry OP this screams "disordered behaviour" to me.

You will NOT put on 3-4lbs of actual fat in a day - it will be bloating if anything. If you gain a couple of lbs on holiday, compensate (in a healthy way!) when you get back home.

And in all honesty I'd ask myself if there were any other troubling behaviours with food/weight in my life because that impulse isn't healthy.

NewlineNY SBB0718M-NYBK Step-On Mini Travel Bathroom Scale, Cool Black

These are similar to mine but they have gone up in prices since I bought mine 3 years ago

chutneypig · 01/06/2019 13:35

I’ve also got mini digital scales as I travel a lot. I’ve taken them in hand luggage, sometimes they don’t blink, but I have had my bag opened up once so I always take them out with my laptop now for scanning.

PCohle · 01/06/2019 13:40

I wouldn't do it. It seems like quite disordered behaviour.

Yabbers · 01/06/2019 13:41

You need to seek some help, if you are this obsessed about your weight.

Sparklesocks · 01/06/2019 13:41

I think it would be a shame to darken your holiday with this burden, even if your weight dies fluctuate on holiday - what would knowing the figures do to help? It would just mean you get upset if you’re heavier than expected and would put a huge downer on your holiday.
If you can’t even let go on holiday you may want to re evaluate your relationship with your weight and the control it clearly has over your life.

missminagrindlay · 01/06/2019 13:43

You sound very disordered when it comes to weight and eating.

theWarOnPeace · 01/06/2019 13:44

Op you need to seek help. This is one of the most fucked up things I’ve read on here, and that’s saying something.

viques · 01/06/2019 13:45

Unless you strap them to your hands so that you can't lift a fork scales are not going to stop you eating.

Either use some will power, or accept that post holiday you are going to be hitting the gym.

CaptainBrickbeard · 01/06/2019 13:45

My scales give me a reading of half a stone difference depending on which side of the bathroom they are on. I can’t imagine that tossing them about in the hold and then putting them on a different floor would do anything for their accuracy and they’d likely to give you a different reading to what you would have at home. Its totally pointless.
