Red Hot Chillis version of Higher Ground is just awful.

megrichardson · 01/06/2019 06:01

Phil Collins 'can't hurry love'. Ok I'm going back a bit, but I thought he was joking the first time I heard it.

TemporaryPermanent · 01/06/2019 06:10

Whitney's I will always love you.

Like being assaulted. And kicked off three decades of melisma, thanks for that Whitney.

Dolly Parton sang her own song properly. Though given she must have earned a ton from it, I doubt she cared.

TidyDancer · 01/06/2019 06:42

I think Boyzone covered Baby Can I Hold You, not Fast Car. Still bad though.

The All Saints version of Under the Bridge was fucking terrible. I'm not convinced they actually knew what they were singing about with that one.

Hallelujah is an odd one because so many singers have given it a bash. One of the worst versions is Katherine Jenkins horrific take on it. She's murdered so many good songs though. The Bon Jovi version of it isn't bad, neither is Jeff Buckley. Alexandra Burke was awful.

megrichardson · 01/06/2019 06:49

Totally agree @temporarypermanent

ForalltheSaints · 01/06/2019 06:58

Anything by Westlife.
Any by Atomic Kitten.
Matt Willis's version of Crash.

SerenDippitty · 01/06/2019 06:58

I don’t think Boyzone’s cover of Love Me For a Reason was a patch on the Osmonds’ version.

Also prefer Aretha Franklin’s version of Walk on By to Dionne Warwick’s.

Danceswithlightning · 01/06/2019 07:06

Leona Lewis' cover of snow patrols run was awful.

KatherineJaneway · 01/06/2019 07:42

You Raise Me Up by Westlife

Housewife2010 · 01/06/2019 07:48

Mariah Carey's version of Endless Love
Also the dreadful glottal stopping Lily Allen's version of a Keane song for the John Lewis Christmas advert a few years ago

weebarra · 01/06/2019 07:54

Leona Lewis' version of run
Alexandra Burke's hallelujah
And I like the rest, especially Hurt, but I don't like the Johnny Cash version of Personal Jesus.

TabbyStar · 01/06/2019 08:08

Gabrielle Aplin cover of The Power of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Terrible. Also agree with Lily Allen and the Keane song.

Parvuli · 01/06/2019 08:16

Ronan Keating and Moya Brennan MURDERING Fairytale of New York 😡

Charlene Soraia whispering and mumbling through Wherever You Will Go. She can’t be bothered to actually enunciate the words so “wherever” becomes “Rare wevver” and “Tree and sand and stone” becomes “cheeanzandanzone”.

😡😡😡😡😡

bananasandwicheseveryday · 01/06/2019 08:40

@TemporaryPermanent

Was just coming on to say that. The emotion in Dolly Parton's version is heartbreaking. Way, way superior to Whitney Houston's singing by numbers version.

In general, I find I prefer originals where they are sung by the person who wrote them - they like how their songs are meant to be performed.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 01/06/2019 08:48

Is nobody going to mention Mel B's cover of Word Up? Painfully bad.
The irony is that Gun did a cover of it some years before and I think it's better than the original.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/06/2019 08:52

Ronan Keating and Moya Brennan MURDERING Fairytale of New York

Yes ! In spades.

When I'm out and about and I hear the piano notes , I get the prickling feeling on the back of my neck as my favourite song (ever) is on.
Then I think 'Is the the Clean Version or the Full Version'

When RK starts warbling , I feel cheated, deflated and gutted in equal measure .

"You're cheap and you're haggard"

Feck right off Ronan.

And , on the same theme , 'Little Drummer Boy' by Little Jimmy Osmond . The amount of brain bleach to get that out of my head Hmm

TheNavigator · 01/06/2019 09:02

Anastacia and Celine Dion performing AC/DC's 'You Shook me All Night Long' is literally the worst sound that has ever assualted my ears. Now you can suffer too [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4GRFW92T9o
The horror]]

GrouchyKiwi · 01/06/2019 09:04

Lily Allen's version of Straight To Hell by The Clash. Awful.

LemonRedwood · 01/06/2019 09:10

Oh god, Parvuli, yes to that awful cover of Wherever You Will Go. I always had to turn the radio off and then someone went and used it in a bloody advert!

I must confess though, I didn't know Adele's Make You Feel My Love and Sinead's Nothing Compares 2 U were covers. I love them both Blush (I'm just going to claim I'm too young...)

LemonRedwood · 01/06/2019 09:13

TheNavigator That was truly awful, but neither of those women were Anastacia or Celine Dion?

AuntieMarys · 01/06/2019 09:15

I give you the best cover of all time...William Shatner singing Common People. Grin
If I was having a funeral, that would be the song. It's amazing.

alittleprivacy · 01/06/2019 09:18

I don't think they ever released this officially but Take That's Smells Like Teen Spirit makes me very embarrassed for them.

Figure8 · 01/06/2019 09:19

That bloody Sound of Silence version.

There was a week or so when that was all that was coming up on my fb feed.

Urgh- it's not that good.

ScreamingValenta · 01/06/2019 09:19

Any eighties rock song covered by a girl with a guitar and breathless voice.

This x 100.

Girls with guitars and breathless voices should only be allowed to perform in sound-proofed rooms, IMO.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 01/06/2019 09:20

One Direction - One Way or Another

Duran Duran - White Lines it was embarrassingly bad

Madonna - American Pie just awful didn’t anyone tell her I guess not

That Brian Ferry version of the brilliant Sympathy for the Devil I had not heard and only listened to 30 seconds it’s awful
