To not need trinkets with my name on now I am in my forties

My name is now popular but was quite rare when I was a kid so finding things with my name on was rare and exciting. Now however whenever my mum sees something with my name on it is bought for me. Wash bags, pencils etc. I feel about 8. Just moaning really.

Gutted for you..... Hmm

What's your name

BeanBag7 · 31/05/2019 17:25

I think you're being a bit mean, shes trying to be kind. If you're close enough, couldnt you just tell her how you feel?

BenWillbondsPants · 31/05/2019 17:26

I think it's lovely that your mum still buys you things. She's trying to do something nice for you.

SignedUpJust4This · 31/05/2019 17:26

I deliberately named my children with very unusual names so I would never have to buy that gift shop tat. Now people get that tat personalised for them. I feel your pain.

KittyMcKitty · 31/05/2019 17:27

Ooooh I think it’s really sweet of her. I have an unusual name (loved on mumsnet but ignored / hated everywhere else) and I’ve never had anything with my name on (I’m 53 btw).

Redshoeblueshoe · 31/05/2019 17:28

It will come in very handy in 40 years time Grin

Asmoto · 31/05/2019 17:32

My name is like yours, OP - how I searched in vain when I was six for a nameplate for my bedroom door or a personalised pen, never giving up, but always disappointed!

Now they're all over the place. I wish I had a time-machine post-box so I could buy them and send them to my childhood self.

Likethebattle · 31/05/2019 17:58

I never found anything with my name on it and was always so disappointed. I’m now 40 and actually get excited if my name is there as it has been more popular in recent years. Somehow it’s easier to find when I go abroad.

notashotasthepreviousyear · 31/05/2019 18:04

I would love it if my mum bought me something with my name on, maybe make a little joke about it to her if it's doing your head in though.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 31/05/2019 18:10

I would so be your Mum. One of my children has a name that is rarely found on anything and if it is it is always a different spelling even though her name is not that unusual. She is 20 now but for years she complained about the lack of things she could buy when each of her siblings had no trouble finding anything with their names on. So if I ever find anything I will be buying it and it will become something of a joke.

BigcatLittlecat · 31/05/2019 18:12

Have we got the same name? Or the same mum? I have loads of random things now! I take most of them onto work!

WoollyMummoth · 31/05/2019 18:17

I hate my very popular 1970s girls name. Everyone know not to buy me stuff with my name on it or it’ll go in the bin.

Whisky2014 · 31/05/2019 18:20

Yanbu. I hate stuff like that

bridgetreilly · 31/05/2019 18:23

Just tell her?

'Mum, thanks, it's been really fun getting a few things with my name on it, but actually I've got plenty now. No need to get any more if you see them.'

Allwalkedout · 31/05/2019 18:24

I really wish I had a mum who thought like that...

oneforthepain · 31/05/2019 18:32

You're ridiculously lucky enough to still have your mum in your forties and you're bitching because she always has you in her thoughts and tries to do nice things for you? Presumably she's been there for you your whole adult life caring too?

How awful for you. I can't imagine how painful it must be to have people who care for you.

CripsSandwiches · 31/05/2019 18:33

Sorry I think that's adorable of her. OK I wouldn't necessary need or want a pencil with my name on but it's cute she still thinks of you when she sees that stuff.

HolesinTheSoles · 31/05/2019 18:34

Awww I'd love if my mum still thought of me when she saw stuff like that!

hollieberrie · 31/05/2019 18:39

Oh this is me too! I'm nearly 40 also. My name was rare when I was a kid, now it's top 20. My mum died a few years ago.. I wish she was here to buy me named trinkets..
Give them to the charity shop maybe?

kaytee87 · 31/05/2019 18:40

Your mum knows you don't need them, she's trying to be nice as you didn't get them as a child. It's sweet. She loves you and thinks about you whilst she's out and about.

cornflakegirl · 31/05/2019 18:49

Maybe you could set up a WhatsApp group with her so she can just take a photo of whatever thing she finds and share that with you? Then you both get the pleasure of her thinking of you, but you don't get the tat.

Fedoratheexploreer · 31/05/2019 19:06

I think it’s sweet

ImportantWater · 31/05/2019 19:07

I bet you are an Erin.

Geminijes · 31/05/2019 19:12

My Mum buys me key rings with my name on. Only ever key rings.

I have a huge number of them. I used to collect key rings when I was a teenager and my Mum now buys them with my name on as a joke. I love it and they always bring a smile to my face when she presents me with her latest buy.

FlorenceKettle · 31/05/2019 19:15

I really hate to be that person but I'm in my 40s and I'd give anything for my mum to do this for me. She died a few months ago.

Anyway that's by the by. But I am struggling to fathom the issue here. She's your mum. It's what mums do
