To drink milk that’s a week out of date

I have a small bottle of milk with a use by date of 23rd May. I don’t want to bin it (I hate waste!) but was wondering if you think it’s okay to consume a week after it expired? I’ve had a sniff and it smells alright, although I’m not really sure what “off” milk smells like...

Bin it, for goodness sake.

tessiegirl · 30/05/2019 18:48

Ugh get rid!

CocoDeMoll · 30/05/2019 18:50

It’s fine if it smells ok. If it’s got those floaters in id bin it though.

WonkoTheSane42 · 30/05/2019 18:50

Milk lasts for ages after it’s sell by date. If it smells okay it’s okay. You would instantly know if it was off by the smell.

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/05/2019 18:54

Take a tiny sip and see if it tastes OK. Then make your own decision.

If it goes off it starts by developing an unpleasant taste. If you put it in a cup of hot tea or coffee it will separate. Then as it deteriorates further it will develop a strong smell, and eventually it will go solid. If it smells "off" you will recognise it!

I'm not recommending this, but I use "off" milk to make very good, fresh tasting and light scones - the lactic acid in the milk reacts with the bicarb of soda that you add to the flour and acts as a very good raising agent.

Mousetolioness · 30/05/2019 18:54

Taste a teeny bit on a spoon - if it still tastes sweet it should be fine.

Candleglow7475 · 30/05/2019 18:55

Is it really worth getting the squirts for the sake of not throwing this out???

SilverySurfer · 30/05/2019 18:56

boak

Sexnotgender · 30/05/2019 18:56

Nope! Bin itEnvy

KatnissMellark · 30/05/2019 18:58

When milk is off, it's obviously off, so just check it and if it's ok drink it.

Amiable · 30/05/2019 18:59

If it looks, smells and tastes ok then you will be fine. Best before dates are arbitrary anyway.

BetsyBigNose · 30/05/2019 18:59

Nope, YAB-VERY-U.

I feel ill just thinking about it.

Envy (NOT envy)

Bleurgh

birdonawire1 · 30/05/2019 19:01

If it tastes ok then it's fine to drink. Milk that's gone off tastes sour, but even sour milk won't cause serious harm. Loads of rubbish about sell and use by dates causing massive food waste.

Frenchfancy · 30/05/2019 19:01

If milk is off you know about it. We never used to have best before dates when we had a milkman. Everyone knew to sniff milk before you drank it.

booksandcaffeine · 30/05/2019 19:02

Doesn't milk have an use by date?

I personally would bin it as the sniff test don't work for me as I hate the smell of milk.

IsabellaLinton · 30/05/2019 19:06

I wouldn’t, I’d pour it away, but if it smells ok and you’re happy to take the risk I suppose you could!

problem1234567 · 30/05/2019 19:06

I've drunk milk 4 weeks out of date, no issues. YOu'll know as soon as you taste it if it is off.

Unsure72 · 30/05/2019 19:07

Hmm, lots of contrasting opinions on here. I’ve got an important weekend coming up so maybe not worth the risk!

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 30/05/2019 19:16

I’ve drunk older than that. I normally buy Tesco skimmed milk and it lasts for ages after the use by date. Obviously if it smells off don’t do it, but otherwise I’d go for it.

Unsure72 · 30/05/2019 19:32

I’ve eaten red peppers (kept in the fridge) three weeks out of date before - they tasted fine Blush

Jesus. This is why there is so much unnecessary food waste in this country.

If it is off, don't drink it. It it isn't off, drink it.

It sounds like it was sealed, so unlikely to be off.

People, stop wasting your money and the earths resources.

Unsure72 · 30/05/2019 19:42

Moving - no, it isn’t sealed.

bridgetreilly · 30/05/2019 19:43

Seriously, if it tastes fine, there's no risk. You'll know if it's off before you've drunk enough to get ill.

TheTrollFairy · 30/05/2019 19:43

I have drunk milk older than that and it’s been fine and I have had milk well within date and it’s been off. If it passes the sniff and sip test then it’ll be fine
