To drink milk that’s a week out of date

I have a small bottle of milk with a use by date of 23rd May. I don’t want to bin it (I hate waste!) but was wondering if you think it’s okay to consume a week after it expired? I’ve had a sniff and it smells alright, although I’m not really sure what “off” milk smells like...

Hmm, lots of contrasting opinions on here. I’ve got an important weekend coming up so maybe not worth the risk! In that case, park it in the deepfreeze, then try it again after the weekend.

Swirl and smell.

I do this all the time. It’s just me in my house so most bottles of milk go beyond the date. (Even if it’s off it won’t make you ill, will just taste gross.)

As others have said, the date is just a (very conservative) estimate. If milk is left out of the fridge for periods of time in summer, it will go off before the date. If it’s in a fridge all the time it will last longer.

How on earth did people manage back in the day when they had a milkman with glass bottles (we still do)? Surely this is something that you learn as a young child? Anyone binning milk just because of a use by date rather than a sniff test is an utter moron I’m afraid.

My ex-MIL (Polish) used to leave a glass of milk out to deliberately let it go, not 'off', but into a refreshing soured type drink. I'm not sure if that's a bit hit and miss but there was definitely a difference between the end producr

product and off milk. No disgusting or vomit-inducing odour. I imagine it was more like a yoghurt. I didn't get to taste it - she made it for my ex!

I never even look at BB dates. Milk is fine - like PPs have said, you'll know if it's off after a sip (or before if you stick it in tea and get white bits floating). One sip won't kill you, it won't leave you glued to the toilet, you won't know.
I happily eat salad cream & Flora that's months out of date, eggs too, cheese, multiple dairy products. The only thing that upsets my stomach is stress!

If it smells fine and has no lumps it's fine - we do this regularly
