Just that really ...

As obviously it has been used today and it’s grossed me out.

It didn’t do my house sale any harm. Sold super quick, within weeks.

But did anyone actually ask you if they could use the loo and you say no.

It took 6 months to sell my house. In that time no one asked to use the toilet, I would have let them if they did ask. (In fairness it’s a bloody good job they didn’t ask as the bathroom door didn’t shut)

'You'd open your loos to a perfect stranger whose been in your house for 30 minutes..... said no one EVER !!'

What's the difference between letting them wander round your house in general, looking into everything (as house-viewers will need to!), and letting them use your loo specifically? I'm in fact someone who likes my privacy and isn't too keen on strangers in my home, especially wandering all over it; but if I'm putting my house on the market, I don't have much of a choice about that! And I don't have more of a problem with them being in my loo than any other part of my house!

ceirrno · 03/06/2019 23:32

It's not only refuse to buy the house if I was told that, but I'd refuse to work with the estate agent that told me!

Denying someone a real, basic, need without good reason (such as no water supply) is utterly disgusting in my eyes. What a horrible way to treat a visitor to your home!

'You'd open your loos to a perfect stranger whose been in your house for 30 minutes..... said no one EVER !!'

If they’d been in my house for 30 minutes they’d either be a) a tradesperson (welcome to use my loo) b) known to me tangientially somehow e.g. with someone I did know (welcome to use my loo) c) looking to buy my house (welcome to use my loo) d) a medical or services professional (welcome to use my loo) e) vulnerable in some way (welcome to use my loo).

Kindness of strangers, and basic hosting. Half an hour is a long time to have a ‘stranger’ in your house and deny them basic facilities.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/06/2019 23:40

NoSquirrel - covered all bases, heartily agree.

GummyGoddess · 03/06/2019 23:40

Yanbu, I dislike people using my bathroom because they leave the seat up to flush which is just foul. Obviously I don't say anything to them, but I then feel the need to clean it thoroughly after they have left.

Bluerussian · 03/06/2019 23:41

Well, no-one should use your loo without asking. I think if people are viewing, spend a fair time in your house looking round and maybe asking questions, they could ask your permission and I doubt you'd refuse. It's just doing it as if they have the right which is wrong.

NoSquirrels · 03/06/2019 23:54

I mean, don’t get me wrong, some people are less desirable to use your loo than others - I’ve had several unfortunate incidents of tradespeople (not sure why I’m saying ‘people’, because it’s men - tradesmen) who haven’t shut the door while they pee/leave a disgusting smell etc BUT you have to be a special sort of uptight to refuse/think it’s terrible to ask/not accept it’s YOUR hangup not theirs/chalk it up to bad manners.

I could never and would never refuse anyone the use of the toilet in my house. Or a glass of water or the use of my telephone if needed.

Obviously you need to be aware of scams, danger, etc but you can do that and STILL be hospitable/kind to strangers - and if someone has been in your house for 30 minutes that’s ages, you’ve little to fear.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2019 11:13

@GummyGoddess - would you refuse to let someone use your loo if they were visiting your house, for whatever reason, and asked if they could?

@Bluerussian - the OP doesn't even know for sure that the viewers did use the loo. It is perfectly possible that they flushed it to check the water pressure, and lifted the lid to make sure that it flushed properly - which is part of due diligence when spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a property.

foxtiger · 04/06/2019 12:09

I think YABU but I realise there are people on here who are much more fussy than me about toilets. The only thing that would really bug me in this situation would be if one lot of viewers used the toilet, left it obviously dirty and then another lot of viewers came in and were put off by seeing that. Just leaving the lid up doesn't make it dirty and since there are people who actively prefer it left that way, the chances are any subsequent viewers won't give it a second thought.

GummyGoddess · 04/06/2019 12:24

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius of course not, like I said, I don't say anything but thoroughly clean after they have left.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2019 12:28

But you think the OP would not be unreasonable to request that people don't use her loo at house viewings?

GummyGoddess · 04/06/2019 15:51

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius no, she isn't. I have never had anyone use the loo when selling, or run the taps. If they wanted to see the water pressure then fine, but don't flush the loo with the lid up.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/06/2019 12:33

I'm sorry, @GummyGoddess, but I am genuinely baffled - you agree that you wouldn't refuse someone the use of your loo, if they asked, but you think that the OP is not unreasonable to do exactly that. That's a contradiction, isn't it? You are kind enough to let someone use your loo, but the OP isn't...

GummyGoddess · 05/06/2019 17:59

No, I can see exactly why she says no. I would like to say no but I don't, so I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to actually say no. I'm just lucky to have a downstairs loo for visitors so I can clean it quickly and am not stressed about the loo being flushed with the lid up and having toothbrushes and DC's bath stuff in the same room.

gummywitch · 05/06/2019 18:44

I am so with the OP on this. Think might print a leaflet out for the estate agent to give to viewers if we hold an open house when we put our house on the market next year. The loo in my house isn't a public convenience for strangers, so no pissing or shitting whilst viewing, thank you very much. Tescos loos are 5 mins drive away. Cleaned up enough builders skid marks and piss misses over the years, loo seats left up, coming straight out without washing hands. I used to be super tolerant of this stuff but that was before i found out about poo particles landing and causing illness. Same with shoes being removed.

GummyGoddess · 05/06/2019 18:55

@gummywitch Shhh! Don't mention shoe removal (I have installed a shoe rack especially for visitors and point it out to them when they arrive)!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/06/2019 23:10

A leaflet? You wouldn’t, @gummywitch? Not ^really??!

You don’t think it might create a slightly poor first impression with the viewers...

speedbird55 · 05/06/2019 23:31

My money would be on the estate agent , straight after viewers left as he was locking up , he was going on to another viewing 100% !

PortiaCastis · 06/06/2019 00:33

Oh God no, surely nobody is that ridiculously precious as to have a leaflet printed. I'm howling with
laughter at that one, still i suppose it'd double up as loo roll

familycourtq · 06/06/2019 11:41

that was before i found out about poo particles landing and causing illness.

FFS if that was true we'd all be ill all the time - it's a load of old bobbins.

Alsohuman · 06/06/2019 11:44

Poo particles! Another 21st century invention.
