To request people don’t use my toilet at house viewings?

Just that really ...

As obviously it has been used today and it’s grossed me out.

Everytime a toilet is mentioned on MN the horror of sharing a toilet becomes apparent.

My DH is a tradesman- sometimes he encounters people who send him off to fast food restaurants to use the facilities rather than theirs. He never goes back to these places for a second job.

My kids come home from school with their mates, all of whom rush in to use our loo- as the ones at school are awful. I find it funny, but guess the OP would not allow primary kids to use their gold standard loo.

@category12

Wow.

You think you realise how weird people are, and then, they just get weirder...

This

Celticrose · 29/05/2019 01:27

@AlexaAmbidextra

I don’t know them and they don’t know me.

So would it be ok if you’d had a formal introduction? Maybe asked for references?

Or a sample? Grin

Tavannach · 29/05/2019 01:55

No I didn’t do the house viewing but the toilet seat was left up.

I've had a difficult day in what's going to be a difficult week, but this really made me laugh. Cheers.

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 29/05/2019 03:23

That's ridiculous and petty.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 29/05/2019 03:50

My DH wees standing up (as I thought most U.K. raised men did). He has never, in the 32 years we’ve been married, left splashes or drips anywhere in the toilet. I don’t know if he has better aim than the messy men other people seem to live with or if he is considerate and wipes up any misplaced wee.

And you are totally unreasonable OP. Toilets are for weeing in, just as doors are for opening and stairs are for climbing. Someone else using your loo will not contaminate it - even if they leave the seat up.

BadLad · 29/05/2019 04:14

What do people do when they stay in hotels knowing that other people have shat in those toilets before them?

Piss and shit off the balconies.

DarlingNikita · 29/05/2019 17:25

Yes, YABU. Get over yourself.

iwunderwhy · 29/05/2019 17:29

I would tape down the toilet seat myself... And I'd bollock your agent for allowing it to happen. Tell s/he next time if they don't know how to say NO they can clean it after viewings and you'll provide bleach and rubber gloves. Uggggghh!!!.

PolarBearkshire · 29/05/2019 17:31

Hahahah! No. Its not normal to ask. They are your potential buyers and everyone can get emergency. Come on! Just stock up on toilet paper hahahaah

mumlost1940 · 29/05/2019 17:33

I heard that burglars use the toilet. I would never do that. I would do the hoovering and ironing leaving everything neat and tidy.

Beverley71 · 29/05/2019 17:35

Both my kids have taken a dump in a show home (it was plumbed in) on at least 3 occasions. I now carry loo roll, soap and a towel whenever we go into one

TapasForTwo · 29/05/2019 17:36

We have just had an offer for a house that we have had on the market for less than a month. Quite frankly, I don't care if anyone has used the toilet during a viewing.

It is a peculiarly MN thing to be squeamish about other people using their loos though.

Seamar · 29/05/2019 17:37

I find this hugely unreasonable. You are good enough to buy the house I am trying to offload. You are good enough to give me 100,000 of your money for my house but you are not good enough to use the bathroom until you have bought it. It’s just taking snobbishness or cleanliness or whatever it is way too far and it’s very rude. What would you do if you were viewing a property yourself and you suddenly needed to use the bathroom? Shit in your handbag? You don’t deserve to sell your house if you can’t show a bit of courtesy and consideration for other people. It’s called hospitality and it encourages people to buy.

CroydonGirl1 · 29/05/2019 17:37

I can sympathise with you on this, because we had builders in our house previously who didn't have very good aim when it came to using the toilet, and cleaning up someone else's pee (or other bodily fluids) is really quite vile.

But, as some people have mentioned, it could be a discrimination issue - perhaps speak to your estate agent and let them know how you feel, and see what they say. It can't hurt to mention it and get their perspective. I'm sure you won't be the first or last person to ask the question!

Mumof2boys74 · 29/05/2019 17:39

Not being unreasonable at all. I am assuming it adults we are talking about who should be grown up enough to go before they view. A kid is a different story but adults no hold it in

Oscarsdaddy · 29/05/2019 17:44

Perfectly acceptable, as long as they flush and don’t piss all over the floor AND put the seat down when they are done it’s fine, stop being over sensitive..... it hopefully won’t be your house for much longer

kalelsdad · 29/05/2019 17:44

People need to go, so they go. If they've left it a mess or the seat up then mention it to the estate agents, mention it anyway stating if someone does needs it than you'd expect the agent to ask that they keep it clean and/or check before the agent leaves your property.

TapasForTwo · 29/05/2019 17:44

"I am assuming it adults we are talking about who should be grown up enough to go before they view"

Never ass/u/me
The viewer(s) might have travelled a long way
The viewer(s) might have bladder/bowel issues that can't be easily controlled
Not everyone has a clockwork bottom

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/05/2019 17:45

maybe they lifted the lid to see if loo/rim/under seat was clean

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/05/2019 17:50

I never understand this obsession with not letting people use a toilet. It's a bit like not answering the door to unexpected guests or the meter reader.

If someone said I couldn't use a bathroom on a house viewing I would assume there was something wrong with the house plumbing and give it a miss.

CBsDad · 29/05/2019 17:52

I wouldn't buy a house from someone who wouldn't let me use the loo.

ursula2468 · 29/05/2019 17:53

YABU

Are you not going to test the facilities in the property you're moving to?

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 29/05/2019 17:54

I understand you OP.
It is like strangers using your toilet and sitting on your toilet seat and some people would probably disinfect and clean as a result.
I can understand the feeling it's like your toilet is a public toilet.
I do understand people needing the toilet while on a house visit but we've never used someone's toilet on a house viewing.
I've never heard of refusing use of a toilet on a house viewing as discriminating against disabilities though.
Testing the plumbing? That's a first,I've not heard of that before either.
When we've sold houses we had the estate agent do them for us and we went out on two out of three properties we've sold(not including properties abroad,we weren't there anyways) so they could have used the toilet or checked the plumbing and we didn't know.
If I ever did see people testing the plumbing I would have thought they're looking for a reason to knock money off the price.
But yes if I did see evidence the toilet had been used I'd be onto the estate agent, they're supposed to check the house before they lock up.
Have a word with your estate agent.
