Inspired by a thread in classics:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3058228-household-objects-that-are-pricks?pg=1&messages=25

What about those appliances that you love? That have served you faithfully for many years without complaint? Or that are new and have changed your life?

Mine is a Clairol 1200 hairdryer from 1983 - older than multiple boyfriends, and far more faithful. Ok, so it doesn't work if you turn it off once it has heated up - so don't turn it off!

With an honourable mention to my Babyliss crimpers, which finally ended their days a month ago at age 30+, only because a cat knocked them off the counter and broke an iron.

My 'new' one is my new Babyliss crimpers - they are hot within a minute! And I love my Dyson pethair - so effective.

But my all-time fave? The toilet. Don;t know how I'd cope without that invention.

My Smeg kettle.

My Bosch washing machine is a bastard. I'm going to have to call someone out. Again.

My Miele vacuum cleaner is also good, although I sometimes think an upright would be less work.

scaryteacher · 26/05/2019 16:32

My clock radio that was bought for my Christmas present when I was 10. I'm 53 now. It still work!

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 26/05/2019 16:34

My mums hoover has been going since approx 1982.
I have an electric, battery powered calculator that’s been going strong (on its original battery!!) since 1996.

pigsDOfly · 26/05/2019 16:36

My (newish) favourite is my Vax Blade cordless vacuum cleaner.

Copes with my dog's long hair without any problems, goes everywhere and cleans as well as my upright.

I bought it as a sort of back up for my upright but the upright hasn't been out of the cupboard under the stairs for months.

PositiveVibez · 26/05/2019 16:38

Our Henry hoover. The shit he has dealt with over the years and he just keeps battling through. He is about a decade old. He's lasted through renovations, rubble, house moves, being bashed, pulled, ridden and he is still good as the day we got him. Plus he always looks so darn happy.

RoseMartha · 26/05/2019 16:47

Bosch washing machine. I keep expecting it to die. It is 15 years old and been used a lot.

Londonmummy66 · 26/05/2019 16:48

My beautiful black and gold hand cranked Singer sewing machine that my mum bought me when I was 12 as she thought it would be easier to learn on than her electric one - the plan was I'd graduate to that but I've always preferred mine.

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2019 16:48

@Dieu We need to know more about the joyous Smeg Kettle! And you have me feeling a bit guilty for not mentioning my Celcus (is that even a make??) washing machine that reliably has been turning out the washing nice and clean for over 10 years, unthanked. And let me reassure you, uprights are never less work :-)

@scaryteacher you are making me feel guilty - I got rid of my radio alarm a few years ago as I wasn't using it (see below). It's probably lying, still fully functional, under layers of landfill :-(

@MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl - I had an alarm that was like that! Kept going from the mid 90s til a few weeks ago, and then wouldn't work despite changing the batteries. Gutted.

@PigsDOfly - OMG, the backup that ends being the main one! That was the battery alarm clock that took over from the radio alarm. And then died :-(

@PositivVibez I've always felt the Henry face deserved a kicking - but I've never owned one. I can completely understand how his unending optimism in the face of terrible waste situations would be very endearing

Atalune · 26/05/2019 16:51

My babyliss hair crimpers! They are ancient, and are very rarely used but still going strong.

Henry Hoover. He’s an annoying twat that won’t go round corners but he sucks like billy-o. And he’s old too.

My mums electric hand whisk, almost as old ad me (43, cough cough) and going on and on.

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2019 16:51

@RoseMartha That Bosch is a BABY! Look forward to many more years of beautiful washing!

@Londonmummy66 My sister still has our Mum's old Singer - my goodness, if we are talking the same hand-cranked, they are so beautiful! None of us ever got the hang of electric ones either.

OP posts:
MsVestibule · 26/05/2019 16:52

My telephone/alarm clock/radio. My sister bought it for me in 1990 and it's still going strong! Also, I've had my basic Oral-B electric toothbrush for getting on for 20 years, I think.

I really want my 12 year old Miele vacuum cleaner to die so I can justify buying a cordless stick vacuum cleaner but I suspect I'll be passing it on to my grandchildren in my will 🙄.

serensiren · 26/05/2019 16:53

My thermomix! Best invention ever!

MsVestibule · 26/05/2019 16:53

Oh, and my electric whisk, bought in 1990. I have bought a Kitchen Aid recently so it doesn't get used as much, but that's done well, too.

I'm starting to feel really old.

Dollywilde · 26/05/2019 16:54

Just spent a great deal of time thinking about this and come to the conclusion that my 12 year old vibrator is the oldest regularly used electrical item Blush

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2019 16:55

@Atalune Babyliss must be one of the best manufacturers cos their stuff seems to be so enduring.

And I have custody of my Mum's hand whisk - electric ones have totally passed me by :-D I do have a food processor whisk, but I always think by the time I've set it up, I could have hand-whisked it. I'd love a simple electric hand whisk, but tbh, I prob wouldn't use it for reminiscence reasons!

My late DH’s 1975 Morphy Richards hairdryer, which still works perfectly. I have short hair now, so don’t need it, but the tiler used it a few weeks ago to dry the edge of the bathroom floor before sealing. He was a bit nervous about it being so old, but it heated rapidly and did the job without shocking him!
I recently replaced my 30 year old kettle - which still worked too, but the kids were worried the element was getting worn and hard to clean.
My fridge is 20 years old and still going strong, and the freezer is about 15.
I doubt that modern appliances will last as long!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/05/2019 16:56

Young in comparison... But our TV is 8.5years old. It has survived 3 international moves (and one domestic move).

My bike is about 18 years old. It has done 4 international moves and quite a few domestic moves. It isn't pretty but it is sturdy...

SomeLikeItTepid · 26/05/2019 16:57

Magimix 4200. Bloody love it!

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2019 17:02

I've just realised another one - my Kindle.

Enabled me to pass on my classic books. I even feel a bit aggrieved that books don't allow the 'your highlights' option

OP posts:
RoseMartha · 26/05/2019 17:08

@ChristmasFluff is it? I hope it will last a couple more years. I am almost divorced and have moving costs so could do without buying a new washing machine

vintagesewingmachine · 26/05/2019 17:08

My Kenwood electric hand whisk which my Mum bought for me in 1997. Used on a very regular basis and still going strong. She has one very similar but hers was bought in about 1982. She still uses it.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 26/05/2019 17:09

Ken wood Chefette hand mixer. It’s ace!

thetonsillolith · 26/05/2019 17:11

A more recent acquisition than 1982 but my Magic Bullet has taken some daily pounding and is as good as the day I bought it.

EngagedAgain · 26/05/2019 17:15

Dolly - is the vibrator actually electric? Still, what a way to go! Or come, haha. Sorry folks, we have lowered the tone somewhat 😚

hellodarkness · 26/05/2019 17:17

A fridge freezer, Iceland's own brand, that cost peanuts and served me well in the garage for just over twenty years.

The Beko replacement - sold as being especially made for outdoor/garage use - packed up within the week. I know it's a rubbish brand but it's just a second freezer, and it still cost £250. Customer Services said it was meant to acclimatise indoors before being moved outdoors despite there being no mention of that in the advert or manual, and despite their own delivery men setting it up in the garage.

Sorry, aware it's meant to be a positive thread about loyal appliances so yes Iceland own brand freezer, bloody marvellous.
