Because more people want to leave the EU than stay in it. Did you miss something? 😁

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 15:23

AFter the polls close tonight which I think is 10pm British time. The Brexit party is forecast to win partly because Farage always does best when turnout is low - and a lot of people didn't vote.

CornishMaid1 · 26/05/2019 15:24

We should get them tonight.

The elections are being held in EU countries between Thursday and today. They do not release the results until all the countries have voted so they are not influenced.

The last poll in Europe closes at 10pm our time tonight and there is coverage on TV from them. Presumably the votes here have already been counted so they can just release the result tonight.

Did you miss that latest polls show more than 60% want to REMAIN?

Cross post.

Brexit Party are expected to do well as they are all behind one message of leaving. The remain vote would be split. Also leave voted were inspired by Nigel Farage so thought more likely to go out and vote as a Brexit protest.

Turnout is still expected to have been really low though.

Pencilcase123 · 26/05/2019 15:33

From what I understand, the votes have not been counted and won’t be until 10pm so we might not have any results until early hours.

TidyDancer · 26/05/2019 15:34

👋🏼 presiding officer here - turn out where I am was higher than for the locals earlier this month but not by that much. Anecdotally from those vocal enough to be gobby in the polling stations it seems that those who have been energised to come out to vote when they normally wouldn't have come out for remain parties. I stress this is just across one district area and only those who have spoken in the polling stations.

I think the Brexshit party may have gained a lot of votes from the tories and ukip, not sure if they have the massive amount of new support that's been suggested. Lib Dem's and greens will have gained from Labour and may have the new votes too.

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 15:35

I wonder who knows now. Results will be released at 10pm, but there will be people who know now - people who were at counts, election officials etc. Someone is sitting on the figures somewhere. Wonder if certain people get a heads up.

How are they announced? For other elections the candidates are all in a leisure centre sports hall at 4am standing on a little stage when they find out..... are candidates formally notified in any way tonight?

MakeItRain · 26/05/2019 15:37

I read that the remain vote is likely to be split while the leave voters more likely to vote for the Brexit party. Also that the turnout is expected to be low.

The article I read predicted that even if the Brexit party win by a minority of the total electorate and even if the pro Remain parties secure a majority of the total vote that it will be splashed all over (many of) the papers in headlines tomorrow as a massive win for Brexit and that the "UK" or "the people" has/have spoken and obviously "everyone" is wishing to leave.

GinUnicorn · 26/05/2019 15:37

Only reason I can see the Brexit party doing well is there are a lot of people who hate the environment, the NHS, common sense oh and anyone with a different accent or skin tone...

FaithFrank · 26/05/2019 15:39

Votes are being counted now in England. I know this because my dp is one of the people doing the counting.

As pp said, results cannot be announced until the polls have closed in all member states, after 10 tonight.

Sturmundcalm · 26/05/2019 15:44

Scotland won't be announced till tomorrow lunchtime because Western Isles doesn't count on a Sunday. Rest of UK should be announced from about 11pm onwards (although probably into early hours of morning before they're finished announcing).

JustSomebodie · 26/05/2019 15:50

The Leave vote will be split between Brexit and UKIP.

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 15:51

Ah, I’d assumed that the votes had been counted on Friday and the results were sat in a big envelope somewhere for David Dimbleby to open on BBC1 at 10pm tonight Grin

BumbleBeee69 · 26/05/2019 15:53

nobody knows anything until the Votes are counted OP Flowers

Thecabbageassasin · 26/05/2019 16:00

Was told there had been a good turn out by staff at my local polling booth. Surprised me because I hadn’t received a voting card, the only canvassing I got was from UKIP, almost forgot to vote had it not been for reminder on my phone.
I live in area with older population, so maybe they all turned up to vote for UKIP. Hopefully not.

Isatis · 26/05/2019 16:04

According to the Telegraph, we will get provisional UK results around 11 pm

BlackForestCake · 26/05/2019 16:11

Getting 30% of the vote isn‘t winning an election, no matter how much the media will try to pretend it is.

TheGoogleMum · 26/05/2019 16:15

I voted but polling station was empty while I was there so wouldn't be surprised if there was a low turnout. I live in an area that voted leave, only leaflets I got were brexit party and UKIP (I voted green and am a remainer)

ChippyMinton · 26/05/2019 16:15

Votes are being counted today, and everyone involved has to stay inside the count venue until 10pm so that the results don’t get leaked before the polls close across Europe (so voters cannot be influenced).

I am also a presiding officer and from comments overheard in the polling station it would not be a surprise if the brexit party win a few seats. The proportional representation method of allocating seats is fairly complex though so may take a while for all the local results to be collated and apportioned at the regional count centres.

PortiaCastis · 26/05/2019 16:20

Well what will the brexit party win, a few seats out of more than 700 in a Parliament they are totally against and if they actually get to take their seats what will they then do because they'll get voted down on most issues in the very Parliament they purport to hate. Farage tried all this with UKIP and what happened ........ not a lot as only one of their MEPs is still UKIP
They do not make sense

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 16:31

I think the point of the Brexit party is that they wouldn’t exist if the Conservatives had followed through with Brexit - one way or another - by the March deadline. They wouldn’t need to, and we wouldn’t have had these elections. They are the ‘protest vote’ for people of any political stripe who believe that the government should have followed through, and that’s a lot of people. It doesn’t really matter what they would actually do in the EU parliament, people voting for them don’t think they should be there anyway. I expect a lot of people voting Brexit Party would otherwise vote quite differently, on very different issues, if we were definitely staying in the EU.

I think the proportion of the vote going to the Brexit party (and similarly the proportion going to pro-PV parties) will inevitably have an influence on the direction the next PM feels emboldened to take on Brexit. If somehow we do have a PV (I think it’s pretty unlikely) and revoke/remain wins then the Brexit Party will probably die a slow death.

JustSomebodie · 26/05/2019 16:31

The 70% are presumed to acquiesce to the will of the 30%.

bellabasset · 26/05/2019 16:32

I haven't really bothered about the EU elections but I did this time. Ann Widdecombe is standing - oh good heavens. Be interesting to see the voting turnout and percentage votes
