AIBU to wonder why people say jeans are comfy?

While leggings/yoga pants/track pants have kind of taken over, I’ve always been puzzled why jeans were considered comfy! Too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and rather unforgiving for irregularly shaped bodies. Leggings are comfy. Sweats are comfy. Pajama pants are comfy. Jeans .... are not.

I also don’t really think they are particularly fashionable in real life, though they did look great in cigarette ads back in the day

AIBU for wondering why people say they are comfortable?

I find jeans comfy. I wear them everyday, even to work. As other people said you dress them up or down. I get mine from Next petite range as I’m short and they are the only place I can find that do jeans that fit me. Only leggings I own are for keep fit I have a few skirts but don’t wear them much as I don’t feel comfortable in them and I don’t own any dresses as they never seem to fit properly all over.

LazyLemur · 26/05/2019 12:35

I suppose it depends on your shape and the cut of the jeans? I have Levis 711 and they are ridiculously comfortable. I am straight up and down boy shape. I find the high waist fashionable ones so uncomfortable.

AbsentmindedWoman · 26/05/2019 12:35

But there are jeans and there are jeans. I think my favourite cut is what is known as 'girlfriend', a variation of the boyfriend but a little more fitted around the hip/ waist and straight leg rather than baggy.

Thick cardboard denim, cheaply cut or not in a shape that works for your body = awful.

Well cut or soft cottony jeans = very comfortable.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 12:37

I'm wearing a pair of gap girlfriend jeans just now and they're very comfortable.

neveradullmoment99 · 26/05/2019 12:39

I agree about being young with a flat stomach and no fat. Totally fine then. Now after pregnancies and indulgences and now sadly the menopause - nope. Not comfy but i do wear them and i think they look good but when i come home, i always change into leggings/joggers!

theworldistoosmall · 26/05/2019 12:39

I live mainly in jeans. Over the years I've been sizes 8 - 16. I travel in them, lounge around the house in them and have fallen asleep in them.
The only time I have found them uncomfy is when they are tight, just like other clothing.

neveradullmoment99 · 26/05/2019 12:40

Oh and I hate rigid denims. So uncomfy. Give me stretch any day!

neveradullmoment99 · 26/05/2019 12:41

Well i am pear shaped so they are nice and neat fitting on the leg but constantly fall down on the waist. Its all about your body shape tbh.

Jolonglegs · 26/05/2019 12:42

Oh I love jeans and spend a lot of time in them at home, but not for work. Leggings are fine and stretchy but don't look as good.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 26/05/2019 12:44

Since my section I can't contemplate wearing jeans. Makes my apron belly look much worse. I really need to lose the belly fat before even contemplating them.

HelloToMyKitty · 26/05/2019 12:48

Surely if they’re not comfortable it means they are either the wrong size or the wrong shape for your body type?

Nope! I’ve been the same shape, more or less, all of my life and never found jeans comfortable. It was just basic person wear in the region I grew up in (wore them every day from primary to post-secondary as I am from a country with no uniform).

I find trousers much more comfortable, especially the wide-legged versions that are trendy at the moment. I’ve largely moved to dresses and skirts, and yoga pants/relaco pants (wonderful bottoms from Uniqlo) at home.

I get that they can be dressed up or down, but never bought the “comfortable” argument. I internally cringe when I see people hanging out at home in them!

They were very comfy when I was very thin in my younger years but now, they are just too hot, itchy, and never fit right.

HelloToMyKitty · 26/05/2019 12:53

Does no one else struggle with the bulky seam at the ladyparts? That chafes me something chronic

Yuuuup. So horrible

I agree with op, I just can't find comfy ones and find them irritating. I see people wearing them and looking good but just can't get on with them!

springydaff · 26/05/2019 12:56

I wear jeans every day and have done for most of my life. Dress them up or down, absolute staple of my wardrobe. I love them.

I don't like stretch and go to great lengths to find rigid denim. It's wearing them until they relax that is the thing. Nothing like it. They also hide a multitude, regardless of size.

Levi 501s, button fly. Perfect.

When it's hot I wear dresses. Looking forward to wearing jeans again helps me with the grief of saying goodbye to summer.

PotOfSilver · 26/05/2019 12:59

I hate proper jeans! It's why I wear many dresses. I hate how frumpy they make me feel, hate the feel of them on my skin and I hate that they are never the right temperature. I'm fine with skinny jeans though, probably because most them have that stretch element and tend to be softer denim.

Bwekfusth · 26/05/2019 13:04

Jeans are a pain in the arse. Absolute hell trying to find a pair that fit me well. Recently bought a pair that for in the shop, and I'm wearing them now and they're baggy as anything 🤬 only pair I really love are my stretchy Levi's, tight on the legs and bum (my only redeeming features) but actually room to breathe around the waistband and don't dig in to my grim mum apron.

Bwekfusth · 26/05/2019 13:05

*fit not for

Freshbreadandbutter · 26/05/2019 13:07

I love them! Have several pairs of All Saints skinny jeans and live in them.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/05/2019 13:08

I used to live in jeans and loved the non-stretchy ones when I was young and thin (sigh!). I now spend half my time yanking them up over my rather large stomach, but have no hips and a small backside so find it impossible to find any that fit properly. Anyone have the same shape and managed to find some that fit?

Jeggings are OK if you have a top which comes down over them but I find it so difficult to get them off over my (large) feet!! I like skirts in the summer and would love to wear dresses but the waist is always too high for me and I find they accentuate my stomach too. I agree with a PP - I hate clothes now!

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 13:09

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel I'm an Apple shape too and find gap mid rise a good fit.

brokenpromisesorlies · 26/05/2019 13:12

I love jeans.. my current jack wills, stretchy ones are more comfy than PJs!!

gobbin · 26/05/2019 13:14

Matalan stretch jeans and jeggings. Very comfortable and fantastic value.

scaryteacher · 26/05/2019 13:14

I love my jeans and buy from Lands End (but only in the sale) and M&S, the stretch denim of the latter is very good for the price. I live in my jeans, so have a variety of colours, can dress them up or down, and wear them all year round.

Once you've found somewhere that does the right rise for you, you are sorted.

CheddarandCrackers · 26/05/2019 13:19

My jeans from Bon Marche are soft, comfy AND have big pockets.
Around the house I tend to wear jeggings or jogging trousers, prefer an elasticated waist :)
