AIBU to wonder why people say jeans are comfy?

While leggings/yoga pants/track pants have kind of taken over, I’ve always been puzzled why jeans were considered comfy! Too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and rather unforgiving for irregularly shaped bodies. Leggings are comfy. Sweats are comfy. Pajama pants are comfy. Jeans .... are not.

I also don’t really think they are particularly fashionable in real life, though they did look great in cigarette ads back in the day

AIBU for wondering why people say they are comfortable?

I used to live in jeans until my first pregnancy 8 years ago. I haven't been able to wear them since they are so uncomfortable, even the softer ones with stretchy waist bands irritate me.

My ex used to lounge around the house in jeans sometimes and it made me feel unrelaxed just looking at him! I don't understand how people can sit around in them all day whenever I have tried to wear them I've ripped them straight off as soon as I got home. One time I had to go and buy a pair of leggings and change while I was in townSad.

I think how I feel about them is quite extreme, I'd love to be able to wear them again.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/05/2019 12:03

I agree. They are terrible in cold, wet weather as they take so long to dry and they cling to your legs, a thick, icy, damp layer. Shudder.
Then in Summer they are too thick.
I also agree that very few people really look good in jeans, and it is tricky to find a shape that works. Jeans work better on men, but not if they have their hairy knees poking out of factory ripped holes . Another shudder.

thundercats192 · 26/05/2019 12:07

At my current size (6-8), I find jeans really comfortable. However post-baby when I was bigger with more weight on my stomach, I didn't like them at all and was all about the leggings.

scratchyfluffface · 26/05/2019 12:09

You need to try Dorothy Perkins Eden jeans. Comfiest things on earth.

I second this, look like jeans but feel like leggings

ElspethFlashman · 26/05/2019 12:10

Am I the only one who can't wear jeggings? I've tried the M&S ones and the DP Eden ones and they just sank down and gave me nappy-bum. Damn my Hank Hill flat arse!

Boyfriend jeans are pretty comfy, but tend to look shabby and schlubby. Skinny jeans are hell on earth but do look good. I keep meaning to try those M&S Lily ones which are slim leg in the vain hope they'll be more comfortable whilst still being smart.

Today I am wearing my black Next harems, or joggers, or whatever they've renamed them to. Good god it's like I'm wearing pyjamas. But respectable enough to wear outside of the house. And unlike black leggings, you don't have to wear something longer on top.

There is literally no leg covering on earth more comfy than these.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 26/05/2019 12:10

Uncomfortable as hell yes.
I think they look good on other people. You need a good bum though - man or woman. If you have a good bum they look great.

Witchend · 26/05/2019 12:11

I had one pair of jeans as a student because I felt I wanted to look like other people. I had some denim dungarees too at one point.

However, I agree with you. Jeans are not generally comfortable.

Never made a thing about it, just don't wear them. Interestingly 2/3 of my dc think the same. The third one lives in jeans.

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 12:11

Agree, they look nice but definitely not comfortable.

PivotPivotPivottt · 26/05/2019 12:12

Just googled Dorothy Perkins Eden jeans I love the look of them.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/05/2019 12:14

The worst thing I ever did was travel on a long haul flight in jeans.

I never found them comfortable even when I was very slim. I haven't worn them for over 20 years.

I don't understand their popularity, really. I rarely see anyone who looks good in them, male or female.

ElspethFlashman · 26/05/2019 12:16

God after that flight you must have had a tattoo of them on your poor legs.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/05/2019 12:17

Oh I love jeans. I wanted to get married in jeans but dh said no Grin we’ve agreed I can wear them in my coffin (he’s having shorts). I find them incredibly comfy. I’m a size 10 & found them comfy when I was an 8 & a 12 too. I don’t have any hips to speak though & according to dh & my best friend have a decent bum.

AutovillaGirl · 26/05/2019 12:17

I bought a pair a while ago (Maine from Debenhams) and they are the comfiest pair I've ever had. I suppose they are a jeggings but don't look like it - they look like normal jeans, are bootleg with stretch and a deep elastic waistband. They fit great and don't go wrinkled like some jeggings. They are so comfy, that being said I change into joggers when I get home and when it's warmer I have some chino style trousers that are useful as they are thin cotton. For just dashing to the supermarket - some track pants. I used to wear leggings with long tops but have gone off them now as they make my legs look fatter than they are :( I watched a Miranda once where she admitted to wearing a Maternity Jean (so comfy! she said), actually it's a thought.... I remember mine being so lovely to wear :)

EllenRachel · 26/05/2019 12:19

I don't find them as comfy post children with a softer tummy but agree on the m&s jeggings. I always have 2 or 3 identical pairs on the go!

EllenRachel · 26/05/2019 12:21

@AutovillaGirl I had a lovely pair of seraphine below the bump maternity jeans and wore them after pregnancy until they wore out - I fitted in my old ones after not that long but found the maternity ones much more comfy!

kenandbarbie · 26/05/2019 12:21

What! I find jeans really comfy! So much so I wear them nearly every day!

Duster12 · 26/05/2019 12:23

Maybe you have an irregular shaped body? Comfy af for me 💁‍♀️

funinthesun19 · 26/05/2019 12:23

Jeggings are comfy and I feel smarter in them than I do in leggings. Jeans are uncomfortable.

Duster12 · 26/05/2019 12:24

Not sure how the pink sign got there but ok

reluctantbrit · 26/05/2019 12:26

I love jeans, they look like proper clothing. I also like chinos or cargo pants if I am on holiday as they have decent pockets.

Leggings, sweatpants are awful in my opinion unless for for sport. Most people look bigger in them than in other trousers, leggings are unforgiven with bumps and if you are not careful they are too thin, get holes too easy and if you are on the short side finding a top which covers your bum but doesn’t drown you is virtually impossible.

flowery · 26/05/2019 12:28

Surely if they’re not comfortable it means they are either the wrong size or the wrong shape for your body type?

I’m sure there are lots of people who struggle to find jeans that fit them well, but that doesn’t mean jeans aren’t comfortable as a clothing item?

I would find shift dresses uncomfortable because they’d either be too big up top or too small at the bottom, so I wear other dresses instead.

Life is too short to wear any item of clothing you’re not comfortable in. I’m comfortable in all my jeans.

GhettoFabulous · 26/05/2019 12:29

Does no one else struggle with the bulky seam at the ladyparts? That chafes me something chronic.

southbucks77 · 26/05/2019 12:30

I’m sat curled up in a camping chair right now wearing jeans. I’m overweight (size 14) and find them fine. I like them to have a bit of stretch but not jeggings as they just show up every lump and bump (and camel toe).
I wear leggings for the gym/running or physical work (gardening/decorating etc) but could never “lounge around” in them. Jeans are more comfortable. PJs are best!
