Cutting down drinking in run up to birth?

Greggers2017 · 23/05/2019 17:18

Hi ladies. I'm 36 weeks pregnant. When did your partners cut down their drinking when out with mates etc in the run up to birth? How many weeks were you?
I'm not wanting to be unreasonable but also getting nervous about the run up to the birth. Thanks

Oh I see, cross posted. We took a taxi. Most people where I live don’t own cars.

maidenover · 23/05/2019 18:13

daisypond because in many cases the partner will be responsible for driving to hospital when necessary and it really isn’t a good idea to drink and drive.

Drogosnextwife · 23/05/2019 18:19

Do you have a weekly night out OP? I think my dp going out to get pissed once a week would annoy me a bit once a baby arrived.

daisypond · 23/05/2019 18:23

maiden yes I see that. It’s just people don’t have cars where I am generally , so I never think about drinking and driving as it’s never anything that could happen.

LordPickle · 23/05/2019 18:24

My DH didn't drink the entire time I was pregnant until I was 38 weeks then he went and got smashed with his work mates and I had to go pick him up at 2am.

firstimemamma · 23/05/2019 18:25

37 weeks I think but baby wasn't born until 41!

YouWhoNeverArrived · 23/05/2019 18:27

My husband doesn't drink from Monday to Thursday anyway, as he works Mon-Fri. He likes a couple of drinks on Fri/Sat/Sun to wind down. I didn't want to take that away from him, so I didn't ask him to cut down particularly. As previous posters have said, options included a relative doing the driving; a taxi; or, if in early labour, you may well get enough notice of what's going on for your husband to stop drinking and sober up! As it was, I went into labour during the daytime, so it wasn't relevant.

HavelockVetinari · 23/05/2019 18:36

I didn't restrict DH at all, we could have taken a cab if necessary.

TipseyTorvey · 23/05/2019 18:44

Same as havelock. We do live within 10 mins drive of the hospital though. With DC1 it was snowing really heavily and we were making contingency plans with a sledge 😂. Taxi would be fine though. I never asked DH to stop drinking but given he rarely has more than a couple of beers it didn't matter that much.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 23/05/2019 18:51

Begging my (what I now know to be) alcoholic husband not to get wasted 4 nights a week was a particular low point of my last few weeks of pregnancy. On a par with considering asking his frankly dangerous mum to drive the 80 mile round trip should labour start whilst he was off his head.

Fortunately dc2 decided to let me know she was on her way about 9am.

Jaynesworld · 23/05/2019 19:10

7 years Hmm

InACheeseAndPickle · 23/05/2019 19:12

I wouldn't want DH incredibly drunk from 36 weeks in case I went into labour. I don't want a drunk birth partner and I would like him to drive me in.

Annasgirl · 23/05/2019 19:18

Even if the OP does not need her husband to drive her to hospital it would be nice if her DP / DH could stay sober for a few weeks - given that she has probably stayed sober since she found out she was pregnant.

God, the low standards for partners on this site makes me cross. And before you all shout, my DH did not stay off alcohol for my pregnancy but he knew not to drink at all near the end - we needed to drive to the hospital and also, I would not ever have had a drunk or even a merry partner join me in labour.

LittleHaloToo · 23/05/2019 19:27

Sorry OP, my DH didn’t go out at all when I was preg. Maybe once for a quiet drink. His choice! I think I had more evenings out than he did! But he’s not really into drinking.

LittleHaloToo · 23/05/2019 19:28

For the record I wasn’t drinking either Smile just nice dinners out

LittleHaloToo · 23/05/2019 19:30

I feel sad for you that he’s getting wasted while your pregnant. Do you feel ok with it? Honestly? I wouldn’t be happy with a partner who drank that much, or went out drinking heavily whilst I was pregnant. Mind you, neither of us are big drinkers.

Bbang · 23/05/2019 19:32

@Greggers2017

My problem with him was dragging him away from overtime at work.

Same!! Mine has had the bright idea to work away in London (4 hours away without traffic) next Monday night and all of tues to be back Wednesday morn. I’m literally due on the 1st which is next Saturday.

SEETHING is not the word 😡 starting to think work is out other bloody woman ffs!

underneaththeash · 23/05/2019 19:34

With DC1 &2 I asked DH to stop drinking more than 1 at 37 weeks, I have DC1 at 42 weeks and DC2 was induced at 41.
By DC3 we'd realised that mine just don't come...so he actually went to a wedding in Singapore when I was 37/38 weeks.

Greggers2017 · 23/05/2019 19:54

Of course I'm happy with him going out. I do usually but can't be bothered at the mo as I can't get comfortable. I come home and have a lovely soak in the bath.
He works really hard and has a stressful job so I can't moan at all. DD and DS are at their dads on a weekend and DSD goes to her mums.

I don't know, it wasn't a conversation we had. I'm sure he would have been sensible enough to not get absolutely ratted in the last few weeks, but I'm sure he had a few social drinks all the way through. On the tiny chance I went in to labour if he was over the limit, we would have just got a taxi.

iolaus · 23/05/2019 21:16

I remember going out to a homebirth just before xmas where the dad had gone on his works xmas do the night she went into labour - she sent him to bed for a few hours to sleep it off

I don't remember having a hard and fast rule at all

Slicedpineapple · 23/05/2019 22:34

handsoff yeah, first baby. I'm grateful that we are having a summer baby (and have a dog!) as my plan is to get out and back in to normality as soon as we can - no point in being a hermit in my house. But DH is very up for spending as much time with his baby as possible, which I think is great.

Funnily enough whenever I speak to people 'in real life' about being up and active with LO, getting out for walks, the replies I get, I might as well be telling people I plan on building a spaceship with baby and moving to mars!

Slicedpineapple · 23/05/2019 22:36

handsoff and I must admit...I am looking forward to a glass of fizz! I haven't had a drop of alcohol since finding out I was pregnant (didn't see the point and I would only worry), so there is a nice glass of prosecco just a few weeks in to the future with my name on it Grin

scratchbass · 23/05/2019 22:41

We live in a city where on a Friday/Saturday evening you can easily wait 1-2 hours for a taxi if you haven't prebooked so my husband isn't going to be over the limit for several weeks!

My friends husband was on his last big night out when things started progressing and there was over an hour wait for a taxi. They ended up at the early stages of being talked through how to give birth at home from the ambulance operator as there were also no ambulances available. Thankfully a taxi came just in time, otherwise she was going to be giving birth at home, with a drunk husband and a toddler.
