I’ve noticed about five different people in the last few days saying ‘rest bite’ when they mean respite.

It’s making my fucking teeth itch!

OP posts:

I've noticed voilá has now become walla or wallah with some people.

Should of, could of, would of 😒

Generally instead of genuinely.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2019 15:20

'And breath...'
I loath it

Other peoples mispronunciations bothers me not as I have a life

Lyricallie · 23/05/2019 15:35

Isle when people mean aisle. I'm on a lot of wedding forums.

Misseuropadiscodancer · 23/05/2019 15:39

One of my favourites was Roofless, ie ruthless Smile

Choccyhobnob · 23/05/2019 15:51

I saw "wallah!" yesterday instead of voila.
There are also a lot of items on my local selling page described as "thrilly" when they mean frilly. I think because a lot of people pronounce th as 'f' they overcompensate and think that all 'f' sounding words actually start with a th!

HPLikecraft · 23/05/2019 16:07

Yesterday I heard "he's cutting off his nose despite his face" which actually makes sense, if you think about it!

Normaknowall · 23/05/2019 16:17

'discrete' and 'discreet'
It makes my wee science brain boil.

DP gets unreasonable about uninterested and disinterested.

LoadOfOldTosh · 23/05/2019 16:29

Using extra 'of' in sentences such as "it's too big of a problem". So annoying! 😳😳

Wins the prize for the most useless and irrelevant post on the thread. 🙄. (Bother me not, not bothers). 😄

daisypond · 23/05/2019 16:45

I quite like rest bite - it has a certain poetry about it! Some words change so much through usage over the years that they become words in their own right. Nickname ought to be and used to be an eke-name. Except that people heard it incorrectly and then used it incorrectly but it still stuck and became a real word. Similarly with umpire. It used to be numpire.

chugmonkey · 23/05/2019 17:37

Much as I do notice many of these, I try not to judge. My weakness, however, is when people say 'it's not that big OF a deal' it make me flinch. Where did the OF come from? It doesn't even make sense.

The one that makes me scratch my head is pronouncing H (aitch) as haitch. Members of my family do it and I've no idea why.

daisypond · 23/05/2019 17:45

Mine were taught at primary school to say haitch. It sounds wrong to me too.

somecakefather · 23/05/2019 17:48

Most people I know say haitch here in Ireland. I'm confused now😅.

OublietteBravo · 23/05/2019 17:51

I received a technical document which talks about one component being cited within another. It’s written by a native English speaker.

somecake might depend on which side of the religious divide you’re on apparently. amp.theguardian.com/science/shortcuts/2013/nov/04/letter-h-contentious-alphabet-history-alphabetical-rosen

🤣 That's quite funny actually. We have both in our family, I must pay more attention to who says what now. (I'm sure they all say haitch though).

GnocchiGnocchi · 23/05/2019 19:15

"I got off of the bus"

Brought instead of bought.

BasilTheGreat · 23/05/2019 19:34

Quiet instead of quite

foreverhanging · 23/05/2019 19:35

One I've noticed recently is 'panda to them' It's bloody pander! Oh my god.

Nairobiblue · 23/05/2019 19:46

This was a new spelling for me (screenshotted off Gumtree)!! Confused

"Pedal" for "peddle" has been around for years, though. E.g. "pedalling his wares" (or more likely his "wears"). Unless his wares are bikes or sewing machines he was peddling them.

somecakefather · 23/05/2019 20:09

Nairobiblue

😂😂😂 That's hilarious.
