To think Stephen Graham is quite possibly the world's finest actor.

Just finished the second episode of the Virtues and I'm just blown away. He was incredible in This is England and all the series, and he was the best thing about the last series of Line of Duty. I just wanted to start a thread to tell the world how utterly wonderful I think he is!!!

No the world's finest actor is Shaun Evans from Endeavour, another Liverpudlian. You might not think so based on Endeavour alone but watch his other stuff and you will really appreciate what a great character actor he is. Stephen Graham just seems to play variations of himself although he's very likeable.

doesthiseemright · 23/05/2019 08:38

@Shortstuff99 see all you have to do is say Good or Bad Grin

PollyShelby · 23/05/2019 08:41

I'm getting an undertone that he's a bit of a dick, can anyone else confirm or deny please?

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 08:52

That vile phlegmy Liverpool accent

I know this isn’t racist, I don’t know what it would class as but it’s horrible. Climb back under your rock, thank you kindly.

I love him and completely agree, he’s one of the finest British actors that ever lived.

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 08:53

And no, he’s a nice guy by all accounts polly.

NorthernRunner · 23/05/2019 09:26

My husband is a Manchurian so his hatred of Liverpool runs deep but even he thinks he is an incredible actor.
Little Boy Blue was great. So emotive, so well acted.
Any of the this is England series and films are wonderful.
I have met him once when I went to BAFTA to eat in the restaurant (my cousin works there so I get to enjoy her benefits 😆) and he is so humble and sincere.

SinkGirl · 23/05/2019 09:28

My husband is a Manchurian
😂

NorthernRunner · 23/05/2019 09:30

Hahahahahaha
Stupid auto correct, I really should check my post before sending them.
Obviously I meant Mancunian GrinGrin

ElizaPancakes · 23/05/2019 09:33

@NorthernRunner do you mean...Mancunian? Grin

Or do I just not know about the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchuria?!

ElizaPancakes · 23/05/2019 09:33

Lol x-post! Grin

NorthernRunner · 23/05/2019 09:46

I mean there may be a rivalry against Liverpool and Manchuria haha 😂 but I definitely meant Mancunian

I need a strong coffee ☕️

SinkGirl · 23/05/2019 09:54

To be fair, I’m a Mancunian Candidate, so it all evens out 😂

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/05/2019 10:11

Yes, he really is from Liverpool, Kirby to be precise. Not a pleasant place, especially when he was born.

BenidormBlast · 23/05/2019 10:22

'he was the best thing about the last series of Line of Duty. I just wanted to start a thread to tell the world how utterly wonderful I think he is!!!'

His character spoilt it imo, too ott and he seemed to over act. Would have been much better if he'd have been cold and detached like he seemed to be in the first episode.

Thought he was excellent in Little Boy Blue.

MummyStruggles · 23/05/2019 10:24

I can't stop thinking about last night's episode, it was fantastic and heartbreaking. The acting was so compelling. I second what someone else said earlier on. It's so good that it doesn't seem he is acting at all, which must be a priceless gift to have.

billydilly · 23/05/2019 10:29

Stupid phone won't let me link it but check out him reading Suicide in the Trenches by Sassoon on YouTube. It was part of the Beebs WW1 commemorations, Graham almost spits the poem out; Sassoon would have approved, I reckon.

Aprillygirl · 23/05/2019 10:30

Was working last night so not watched the second episode of 'The Virtues' yet but thought he depicted a man going from sober to mortal drunk in episode 1 brilliantly. Also loved him in 'This is England' and 'Little Boy Blue.' He's weirdly quite fanciable too AND one of my best friends is a scouser and I bloody love the accent!

BlueStockingUK · 23/05/2019 10:31

I concur ! He's an incredibly talented actor. We all love him in our house Smile

thornyhousewife · 23/05/2019 10:33

I think he's mega talented. He reminds me of so many of my relatives, so he feels authentic and familiar to me somehow.

Femalebornandbreed · 23/05/2019 10:34

He is brilliant.

Fantastic in little boy blue and empire broad walk too.

Langrish · 23/05/2019 10:35

I don’t know who he is 😊
But I was astonished the first time I heard Shaun Evans’ real accent (must admit I much prefer his Endeavour voice).

Bezalelle · 23/05/2019 10:51

I'm a Scouser, and I do kind of agree that the accent is phlegmy. Not vile though.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 23/05/2019 11:04

YANBU. He's wonderful.

He stole the show in Save Me even though he had a relatively minor role and that series was packed full of fantastic actors. I agree with pp that the last series of LOD wasn't up to par but Stephen Graham was the only thing that made it worth watching IMO.
I'm recording The Virtues so I can binge watch the whole thing next time the DC are staying at Grandparents. I love anything by Shane Meadows.

ThatCurlyGirl · 23/05/2019 11:14

He really is brilliant. I get goosebumps sometimes from his acting even when he isn't saying a line! I always think he'd be incredible to see in a smallish theatre too.

Would love to see him in a really different part as he does seem to get typecast but feel like he could obviously do a much wider range of roles.

ThatCurlyGirl · 23/05/2019 11:15

@cheesenpickles

His range is excellent and I truly think he'll be like Olivia Coleman and end up with at least an Oscar nomination, if not the win, one day.

100% agree. I might put a bet on it sometime!
