Who was BU? Manager or Colleague - Time And Pay

Hi all,

I’d welcome thoughts on an issue that happened in the office last week; as I can see both sides and wanted others thoughts:

We’ve just gotten a new manager. Before he joined, the unwritten policy was that as long as you didn’t take the P you could leave the occasional half hour early for appointments, childcare whatever as long as your work wasn’t behind and you would made it up at some point when it was needed.

The new manger however isn’t keen on this; last week a colleague asked if she could leave half an hour early for an appointment. The manger asked her to email him with a written request. She was then allowed to leave half an hour early but was docked half an hours pay. (We’re salaried)

Yesterday, we were in a staff meeting lead by this manager. It got to got to the end of our directed hours; and we were about two thirds through the agenda. My colleague stood up, said see you tomorrow and walked out. She said this morning it was in response to being docked pay — if that’s the way the manger wants to play it, she isn’t working a second beyond her contract hours.

What are people’s thoughts?
Thanks!

Travis. It is her with a name change. She says she’s a director and senior manager. Just like the other one was. 🙄

CloudyForest The fact that so many of OPs colleagues have resigned should show you what a crap managements style that is. Maybe you would benefit from some training.

With your colleague. If they’re going to be that tight with time, then I would be too. My manager is a star. When my DW was pregnant and had hyperemesis gravidarum he let me skip out on work a couple of times to take her to hospital. When I was begging colleagues to cover me because I was unable to come to work that day (shift worker) and he got wind that I was asking for favours (we have a formal debt system for managing favours between colleagues) he said “stop getting into debt with your colleagues and ring me, I’ll book OT for you”.

I will do whatever he wants- whenever I can. One of my colleagues’s Mother’s died and he had to take a day off for the funeral. I worked his shift for no OT. Wouldn’t bat an eyelid; if I can help this manager out I will. I owe him so much, and it will never be forgotten.

@CloudyForest
You're hilarious 😂
Staff retention must be high!!
I remember the school posts too-you're definitely the same poster.

ChicCroissant · 25/05/2019 12:29

I see CloudyForest writing large cheques at a tribunal some time (former HR here)!

We were allowed time off to attend medical appointments, once we made them at the beginning or end of the day. We could take any amount of these. It means people are less likely to become so ill they need to take sick leave I suppose and people are generally less stressed.

Ah cloudyforest the business manager fantasist poster is back
Haven't seen her for a while

Ghostontoast · 25/05/2019 14:21

Half term?

Ghostontoast · 25/05/2019 14:21

...and no one to lord it over!!!

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/05/2019 15:42

Ah cloudyforest the business manager fantasist poster is back

Now come on, don’t sell her short. It’s Director and Senior Manager. 😂

WhoatemyLindtbunny · 26/05/2019 06:45

Haha brilliant! Well done to your colleague!

Quite how you dock someone’s wage by half an hr who is salaried I don’t know either. He maybe needed to run that one by payroll - bet they’ll love him 🤣.

Can you not just have a short lunch then it’s a bit more transparent? But your colleague was well within her rights to leave.

mummyhaschangedhername · 27/05/2019 21:26

Good luck OP. Hope you find something new quickly.

SD1978 · 27/05/2019 21:55

With colleague- if there is no give and take, then contracted hours only. You can't dock pay one day and expect extra time at work the following day.

I’d be scouring e-bay, and hoping I was drawn as their secret Santa, watching them open a 9-5 dvd would make my year !
