To think Love Island should be scrapped

Following the JK incident and the reality TV issue finally being looked into I really hope LI is next to go. I admit I'm not a fan of reality television at all and I strongly disagree with people finding fame through it and receiving opportunities (presenting jobs for example) way ahead of people who are putting themselves through university.

Almost everyone I work with was talking about LI last year and there were so many articles on it that I caved in and thought okay I'll give it a go... I lasted a few episodes. I honestly thought it was awful. You have people treating each other like absolute shit, judging one another based only on looks, humiliating each other, hurting each other, dumping each other and being encouraged to have sex on national TV. One guy spent a few days all over some young girl and promising she could trust him (Georgia?) only to disappear and return a few days later holding hands with another woman?! Is it really so entertaining to watch people being publicly kicked in the teeth?

I understand you are probably a thick skinned and narcissistic person to put yourself in that environment in the first place, I understand they are looking for fame not real love. But I think it's utter trash and gives out a horrible message to teenagers watching it.

Yes I know I don't have to watch it and I have a remote control but it's Sunday evening and I just fancied a rant.

Yabu
Love island is very entertaining

AlwaysCheddar · 19/05/2019 20:42

I saw something on facebook along the lines of:

1 suicide connected to Jeremy Kyle - outrage and they cancel the show.
1 suicide connected to Love Island - outrage and they cancel the show.
70+ suicides in the army last year - silence and nothing is done.

dudsville · 19/05/2019 20:44

Alwayscheddar, fab stats. That needs reporting a million times. Can you include stats on suicide resulting from poverty?

dudsville · 19/05/2019 20:45

Reposting! Not reporting. Only saw the typo as it loaded. Grrr..

Jackielaffertyiscold · 19/05/2019 20:47

Love island is fab

araiwa · 19/05/2019 20:48

Its cheap shit tv

Blame the people who watch it

60secondfacetimer · 19/05/2019 20:49

I don't mind a bit of love island tbh.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 19/05/2019 20:50

There have been two suicides of former contestants of Love Island and it's not yet been cancelled. It makes no sense getting rid of JK (though it's repulsive tv and deserved to be axed) if they're going to continue making Love Island.

HelenaDove · 19/05/2019 20:51

Reality TV is toxic. Whole lot needs to go.

AuntieMarys · 19/05/2019 20:51

All reality shit should be banned

HelenaDove · 19/05/2019 20:52

Too much TV these days contains bullying and humiliation. We are devolving as a species.

TantricTwist · 19/05/2019 20:55

Jeremy Kyle was a pig who shouted at the most vulnerable people in society, and people loved watching it.

I can't believe it carried on for so many years.

That show made me physically recoil in horror it was so utterly vile.
So glad that style of TV is finally over.

SoCallMeMaybe · 19/05/2019 20:56

It’s not the same as the Jeremy Kyle situation. It’s just not.

Vulpine · 19/05/2019 20:57

Yes I agree cancel it

cocodash · 19/05/2019 21:02

Not gunna lie. I fuckin cannot wait for love island to start again.

RozHuntleysStump · 19/05/2019 21:03

I live for Love Island.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 19/05/2019 21:05

I honestly think as a programme it pretty much sums up all of the worst aspects of today's society. No wonder we have so many mental health issues and suicides when this is what many young people look at as "success"

Thismumlikesart · 19/05/2019 21:07

I don't think they need to ban it. They do need to review who they allow on the show, how they prepare contestants for fame, and the level of support they offer after the show

TeddybearBaby · 19/05/2019 21:07

100% you’re so right. Just about sums up everything that is shit with society 😔

nokidshere · 19/05/2019 21:10

They should be banned because they are crap. But no one is forced to take part or stay.

MashedSpud · 19/05/2019 21:13

Cancel it and all reality tv.

fruitpastille · 19/05/2019 21:20

That Facebook army suicides thing is made up. The suicide rate in the army is lower than the general population. 310 suicides between 1998-2018.

Jeremy Kyle is awful though and I'm glad it's been axed.

TheRLodger · 19/05/2019 21:23

I’m in the looking forward to love island starting again camp.

ThinThighsPlease · 19/05/2019 21:29

Yes ALL reality TV is trash. Including shit factor. I belong in the 80s and 90s where programmes were real entertainment and famous people were famous because they were talented, not some silicone filled Essex twat arranging pap shots on a beach. Ah The good old Generation Game and Wheel of Fortune where the contestants just appeared once on the show then fucked off home...

What’s the general definition of reality tv?

Bake Off?
Louis Theroux?
24Hrs?
SAS Are You Tough Enough?
Back in Time?

Or is it just youth orientated telly people dislike?
