I want to put together a playlist for my DD as she has a horrendously difficult time ahead of her (you can search my username to see why) I am hoping it will help her in some way...calm her. Take her mind off things.

If you want soothing I also like the second movement of Bach’s concerto for two violins:-

Best wishes to your daughter.

Excited101 · 19/05/2019 19:32

War Song by Phamie Gow is so beautiful!

Poshjock · 19/05/2019 19:33

Some fantastic suggestions here.

Carnival of animals - saint-saens.
Barcarolle -Offenbach
Sanctus- Jenkins
I liked Mylene Klass’ album Moving On
And my absolute favourite:
Die Moldau - smetana. It was written about the river running through Czech Republic and when you listen you can imagine the river winding through fields, valleys, mountain scapes, castles and finally into the bustling city of Prague. Truly beautiful and emotional. It is from a wider symphony called Ma Vlast (my homeland).

Enigma - Return to innocence, always found this so soothing

VoteJadot · 19/05/2019 19:34

Bach's double violin concerto.

PulyaSochsup · 19/05/2019 19:36

Pathetique sonata (Beethoven). Beautiful and very moving. Hope your DD is ok.

thelikelylass · 19/05/2019 19:37

The Carnival of the Animals
Suite by Camille Saint-Saëns
(My last post on mumsnet was to say my dream job would be as classic Fm presenter!)
Hope your daughter finds comfort in this music,as so many others have.

origamiunicorn · 19/05/2019 19:37

Spirit Garden - Gavin Luke
Clair De Lune - Claude Debussy
Lieder One Worte - Felix Mendelssohn

VoteJadot · 19/05/2019 19:37

And Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, which is much cheerier:

leafinthewind · 19/05/2019 19:38

We've had a couple of votes for Rach 2, but you can't beat Rach 3 - with Horowitz playing.

Historydweeb · 19/05/2019 19:38

Debussy - Girl with the flaxen hair is nice. Also Kings college choir Cambridge for their version of Agnes Dei.

MissLadyM · 19/05/2019 19:39

Gorecki Symphony no 3. It's hauntingly beautiful.

Wormentrude · 19/05/2019 19:40

Instrumental:

Choral:
Palestrina - Sicut cervus
Eric

There's also an amazing choral version of 'This is where I sleep' by Voces8 (originally Emeli Sandé) which is BEAUTIFUL.

RuffleCrow · 19/05/2019 19:40

The Lark Ascending transformed my view of classical music so i'd have to agree with pps.

I'm always floored by Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Grew up with it but it still gets me every time.

Another vote for both Allegri's Miserere and Debussy's Claire De Lune.

ItsAliveItsElectric · 19/05/2019 19:41

To echo many posters:

Ludovico Einaudi (specifically Night Book and Divinire) . He's amazing in concert.
War Song - Phamie Gow
Lark Ascending and Thomas Tallis - Vaughan Williams
Adagio for Strings
Nimrod- Elgar
Miserere
The Heart Asks Pleasure First- Theme fr The Piano
Titanic soundtrack is lovely
John Barry - Out of Africa
John Williams does many movie themes like Harry Potter and I think Lord of The Rings (may be wrong)

Love to your DD. Classical music always brings me peace

Poshjock · 19/05/2019 19:41

Oops that sounded like I was saying my choices were fantastic! I meant everyone else’s!

Forgot to say: film themes and composers are worth looking at. Thomas Newman is very peaceful music - American Beauty, Meet Joe Black, Shawshank Redemption. Also James Horner - last of the Mohicans, Troy, Titanic. My favourite soundtrack is The Pacific - Hans Zimmer. It’s very emotional as is the sister TV programme soundtrack Band of Brothers (Michael Kamen)

AnnaDine · 19/05/2019 19:42

‘Soave sia il vento’ - from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte is beautiful and the one piece of music I’d save from the waves!

Poshjock · 19/05/2019 19:42

Haha ItsAlive! Crosspost.

redbedheadd · 19/05/2019 19:43

There's some lovely John Williams scores : Schindler's List and Across the Stars are my favourite.

Bruch Violin Concertos are beautiful.

O Mio Bambino Caro is stunning

onalongsabbatical · 19/05/2019 19:43

Oh agree with loads of these just adding the Ebarme Dich Aria from Bach's St Matthew Passion. And all the Chopin Nocturnes. And Beethoven's Appassionata Piano Sonata. Gonna be a long playlist, OP! Best wishes to your daughter. Flowers Here's the Bach.

Helenluvsrob · 19/05/2019 19:45

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis .... probably my favourite.

Hopoindown31 · 19/05/2019 19:45

Hymn of the Cherubim by Tchaikovsky
O Magnum Mysterium by Lauridsen
Symphony No. 8 by Mahler

The Mahler is epic and quite different to the other two which are much more reflective choral pieces.

Myworstnightmare123 · 19/05/2019 19:47

Oh my word....... I cannot believe my ears are only hearing so many of these for the first time. What the hell have I been doing

OP posts:
Wormentrude · 19/05/2019 19:47

Sorry - my flailing baby pressed post before I was ready...

Instrumental:
Warlock - Pavane from the Capriol Suite
Batt - Love in slow motion
Handel - Courante from Suite in A major (HWV 426)
Corelli - Christmas concerto (the whole of the famous one)
Debussy - The girl with the flaxen hair

Choral:
Palestrina - Sicut cervus
Eric Whitacre - Sleep
Robert Walker - As the apple tree
Rachmaninov - Bogoroditsye Dyevo

And Loveliest of trees, by Vaughan Williams.

And the Emeli Sandé song that I tried to recommend BEFORE the flailing baby...

I think I'm done, now!
