I want to put together a playlist for my DD as she has a horrendously difficult time ahead of her (you can search my username to see why) I am hoping it will help her in some way...calm her. Take her mind off things.

I love Elgar's cello concerto

Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. When my son practices it, even with mistakes, it stops me in my tracks and I can think of nothing else. I have to stand and listen.

I came on to say schindler’s list, pleased it has had a couple of mentions. It truly is what it would sound like if music could cry.

For a more upbeat suggestion I love Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.

Soave Sia AL Vento. Tercet from Cosi Fan Tutte by Mozart. It's heart stoppingly gorgeous and soothing.

I'm not sophisticated so these are mainstream, but my best relaxing ones are:

All of the marriage of Figaro - I like the Lisa de la casa recording, think it's Barenboim that's conducting. It's got everything - joy and beauty.

Doribella's trio - Soave Il vento from Cosi makes me cry. Schwarzkopf sings in my favourite version but I'm not sure what the recording is.

Mozart Serenade no 10 in b flat k361 adagio.

Chopin nocturne 2 in e flat ( bad Santa sound track!) It's like lying in a warm bath that never gets cold.

Nimrod by Elgar. So moving.

Spiegel Im Spiegel - It's such a beautiful piece of music and really quite moving.

Most beautiful for me is Dvorak 7: the complexity of the melodies and the arc of the symphony. It’s just absolutely astounding.

Not all of it is particularly calming, though, I fear - but just brilliant.

I'm a sucker for a ballet, and Tchaikovsky does it for me ever time. Waltz of the Flowers is beautiful unless you are The Dewdrop Fairy and bricking it, also the wheat dance from Coppelia (Leo Delibes) is beautiful.
