Does it cause you any problems?
If you could pick a name what would it be?

I am always cringing inside when I tell people my name even though it is a normalish name (though not desperately popular )
My dad choose it but spent my whole life pronouncing it wrong ! I hate it. I wanted to be a Kate or Sarah and now my two daughters have those names which is nice.

DaffodilsAreMyFav · 17/05/2019 21:24

Mine is a good Irish name. Does cause some confusion (have lived in England for a lot of years) - but I like it. It's me.

highheelsandbobblehats · 17/05/2019 21:53

I'm Rachel. I like it. I was born in 1982, so I was at school with lots of Emma's, Sarah's, Claire's, Joanne/Joanna's, Laura's etc. Most of whom seemed to have the middle names Jane or Louise. There was one other Rachel and a Rachael in my year, so I was happy enough with that. It was a big school, we ran in different circles.
It does drive me a bit bonkers when people insist on adding the extra a at the end. My husband always calls me Rach, unless I'm in trouble. I don't mind Rach from other people as long as I know them beyond formalities. Just feels a bit familiar otherwise.
I did try to go by Rae as a teen as I thought it sounded cooler, but it doesn't suit me so never stuck.
I've always liked my middle name.

Sparadrap · 17/05/2019 22:07

I’ve got a fairly unusual name. I didn’t love it as a child and used to want to be called something straightforward like Rachel or Emma. It used to embarrass me that it was such a full on name and sounded a bit posh.

I started to like my name as a teenager and now really love it as an adult. It’s nice being a bit different.

One thing that does annoy me about it is that there isn’t a natural, nice shortened version of it. Consequently I’ve given my children names that can be shortened nicely but are lovely (I think) in their full version too.

@vampirethriller Petra? Sheba?

@EastMidsGPs I know a Gemini and she hates it!

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace that's a great name!

Justkeeprollingalong · 17/05/2019 22:34

Tamsin/Tasmin?

Justkeeprollingalong · 17/05/2019 22:35

@SneakyGremlins
Cheyenne?

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/05/2019 22:37

Got it Sneaky gremlins , I used to ride a horse with that name so don't know why I didn't get it.
Sitting Bull is a cool name thoughGrin
My name is unusual in the UK, but ten a penny in Ireland, even though it's not an Irish name.
I like my name though, always have.

Ellisandra · 17/05/2019 22:40

I dislike mine.
It’s old fashioned, but not one that’s ever come back in. Similar that respect to, say, Maureen, Shirley, Edna, Barbara. Just old, not classic or interesting or even nice sounding.
I’ve never met one the same age.
Once when I was in a club and met a man, he thought I was giving him a fake name Confused

SneakyGremlins · 17/05/2019 22:44

@Justkeeprollingalong

Wink mhm!

BloggersNet · 17/05/2019 22:46

I don't know about mine, on the one hand it's a very international and easily recognisable name in almost any language. On the other hand, it's so common and people can't stop commenting about that fact. And despite it's "international-ness" people are so often spelling it wrong, though I suppose that may be because of my accent.

WendyNotWendier · 17/05/2019 23:20

@Walnutwhipster, I hate my name. It's very 70s, similar to Donna in my opinion and the youngest I know is 40+. I also learned it has awful connotations on MN. I don't have a middle name so that was a no go.

Not Wendy by any chance? Wink

SecretMillionaire · 17/05/2019 23:30

I used to like my first name when I was a child. As I got older I started to hate it as it is often referred to as a stripper or porn star name. I hated my middle name but changed that by deed. I would have changed my first name but my youngest children have learning disabilities and would not have been able to grasp why mummy’s name changed so a stripper name it remains.

AnxietyDream · 17/05/2019 23:37

Dislike my name - it's 'little girl'y. My parents gave me a more sensible grown up middle name, but I would feel weird going by it.

Papergirl1968 · 17/05/2019 23:45

Born in the late 60s. It’s lynne. I don’t like it, never have. It’s just dull. And dated. Plus I always have to spell it, and friends and even relatives spell it wrong on birthday cards etc. One of my friends even calls me Linda - that’s not my name!

Weedsnseeds1 · 18/05/2019 00:12

@vampirethriller , if my parents had called me Shep or Rover I'd never forgive then!

ilovepixie · 18/05/2019 00:20

My name is susan. It's blah! I would love to be called Charlie.

louderthan · 18/05/2019 00:23

Yes. It's not that common but also not particularly 'out there'. My first name, middle name and surname all have three syllables, which pleases me.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/05/2019 00:25

I hated my name so I changed it via deed poll. Happy now.

louderthan · 18/05/2019 00:26

It's Eleanor. Pretty timeless really.

BeenThereDone · 18/05/2019 00:33

Really hated mine when I was younger. Really ordinary plain first name with an unusual surname. Spend most of the time correcting people or constantly having to spell it out..... Love it now

Papergirl1968 · 18/05/2019 00:41

Bonnie, Vampire?

puppylovebaby · 18/05/2019 01:02

I absolutely love my first name. It is really a nick name but for me it's my given name. I have also had an usual Devon surname and was desperate as a child to have a
More common surname. I took my husbands surname when I married which is also rare but I love it!!

I ended up securing 2 amazing jobs as employers told me I was memorable....

TooManyPaws · 18/05/2019 01:13

I've never really forgiven my parents for saddling me with three names I have to spell every time, including my surname. Even my boring, simple middle name has a choice of two spellings.

My first name is very 1960s popular though still used and with several weird and wonderful spellings though I got the 'correct' version. My parents never corrected their friends mispronouncing it which was nails on a blackboard to me.

Eventually, I changed it officially to a short version when I left uni by writing to all official agencies to notify them of the change of name so the short version is on my passport and driving licence, and was also on my military ID rather than what's on my birth certificate. I still have to spell it though.

Now I get an even shorter version which is also my initials, which is useful at work as there are two of us in a team of six.

Treaclepie19 · 18/05/2019 06:06

@Justkeeprollingalong ohh good try! Nope, begins with a K.
